623. Belinda WOLF 1 (Luella CUSTER , John Alexander CUSTER , Alexander S CUSTER , John CUSTER , Emanuel CUSTER , Nicholas CUSTER , Arnold CUSTER , Paulus CUSTER , Arnold Arets , Johannes , Reinhart \ Reiner , Ololus ) was born on 24 Nov 1901 in Racine, Meigs, OH. She died on 30 Aug 1982 in Lagrange, IN. The cause of death was complications of a stroke. She was buried in Letart Falls Cemetery, Letart Falls, Meigs, OH.

Biography written by her son, Harold Norris -
Belinda was born in Racine, Meigs County, Ohio, the daughter of Lewis Wetzel Wolf and Luella Custer. She had siblings of Palmer Gilbert, Dill, Cressa Gertrude, and Irvin June. She graduated, in 1919, from Racine High School as Valedictorian in the first four year graduating class of the school. She then attended Rio Grande College, graduating with a teaching certificate and began teaching in Meigs County at Letart Falls and the old Shadyside schools. At Letart Falls, she met and married Lawrence "Tan" Norris. They lived at Letart Falls and then moved for a short time to Erie, Pennsylvania. When Tan became a minister, they began a typical ministers life, moving often. From 1928 to 1934, Pomeroy, Ohio; Junction City, Ohio, 1934 to 1948; Decatur, Indiana, 1948 to 1958; Syracuse, Indiana, 1958 to 1960; Zanesville, Indiana, 1960 to 1967; Decatur, Indiana, 1967 to 1970; Rome City, Indiana, 1970 to her death in 1982.
At Junction City, Ohio, she taught school and when educational requirements became more stringent, she furthered her education by attending Ohio University at Athens, Ohio during the summer months. Both as a teacher and mother, she was a stern disciplinarian, raising her children with Christian and ethical principles. She always lived her life to exemplify " the pastors wife " and made many sacrifices for him and her children.
Belinda suffered a stroke and was taken to the Lagrange County Hospital at Lagrange, Indiana, where she died after a two week stay. After funeral services at Woodruff United Methodist Church, she was taken to Letart Falls, Ohio for burial in the Letart Falls Cemetery.
Belinda (Wolf) Norris was, indeed, a remarkable woman. As mentioned earlier, she had obtained a teaching degree but marriage and a large family to maintain forced her to quit teaching for a time but after the family moved to Junction City, Ohio, she obtained her degree at Ohio University and continued teaching at the third grade level at Junction City. All this was accomplished while raising a large family and maintaining her duties as a pastor's wife. She was left alone, while Lawrence was in the service, to raise a large family. She maintained strict discipline in the family and continued to raise them with Christian principles. Her life and trials were enough to break the toughest of individuals, and even though her health was never good, having suffered vascular problems since her 30's, she, somehow, had the fortitude to keep going. Several of her children could not understand, as children, but as each has reached maturity with families of their own, they marvel at the way she was able to maintain over the years. There must be a special place in Heaven for her.

Belinda married Reverend Lawrence T NORRIS "Tan" on 8 Jun 1922 in Racine, Meigs, OH. Lawrence was born on 20 Nov 1902 in East Letart, Meigs, OH. He died on 25 Mar 1991 in Decatur, IN. Lawrence moved in 1948 to Decatur, IN.

BIOGRAPHY: Written by his son, Harold Norris -
Lawrence T. Norris was born November 20, 1902 at East Letart, Meigs County, Ohio. He was the son of Philson and Ella (Pilchard) Norris. His boyhood years were spent at East Letart where his father was a truck farmer. He was educated in the school at East Letart and later at Letart Falls.
On June 8, 1922, he married Belinda Wolf, daughter of Lewis Wetzel and Luella (Custer) Wolf of Racine, Ohio. They were married in Racine at the parsonage of, and by, Rev. Howard B. Pilchard, a cousin to Lawrence's mother. They met at Letart Falls where Belinda was teaching school.
Belinda was born November 24, 1901 at Racine, Ohio where she attended school graduating in 1919 as Valedictorian of her class which was the first four year graduating class at the Racine Consolidated High School. After high school, she obtained her teaching certificate at Rio Grande College and began teaching at Letart Falls and also at the old Shadyside School. Later, she attended Ohio University and taught third grade at Junction City, Ohio.
Lawrence, known as "Tan" in his early years was a carpenter and machinist. As a very young man, he and his father were butchers and had a meat route throughout the Letart Township area. At the age of 26, he felt the call to become a minister and began preaching, covering 5 churches in the area around Pomeroy, Ohio. They lived in the parsonage at Mt Herman church in rural Meigs County. His salary was $400.00 per year but due to the depression, no one had money, so he never received his salary. He was a man who was blessed with the ability to do almost anything with his hands, a carpenter, machinist, brick mason, etc. That ability fed his family for many years as ministers during that time made very little money. He was also a very good marksman who enjoyed hunting and that also helped raise the family. He was ordained into the United Brethren Church on September 10, 1933. He had preached 5 years before his ordination.
When Lawrence was offered the church at Mt. Herman, it and the other four churches had been closed for several years. The parsonage had not been lived in for many years and was in pathetic shape. The rooms were so small that a 9'x12' rug would not fit in the rooms. When Lawrence and Belinda went to look at the house, the wallpaper that had been placed on the ceiling was hanging loose and had to be held up to look at the house. There was no indoor plumbing, only a spring, where Belinda was required to lay on her stomach to dip water. Lawrence told Belinda that he didn't think he could subject his family to such conditions. Belinda's reply was, "Let's pray about it." They got on their knees in the living room of that pathetic little house and felt God's leading to accept the situation. There they stayed, raising the large family, until 1934 when Lawrence accepted a church at Junction City, Ohio. Mt. Zion United Brethren Church was also a rural church but somewhat better off financially and also had a larger and better parsonage.
Somehow, during this time, Lawrence found the time and money to further his education. He commuted from southern Ohio to Huntington College in Huntington, Indiana, returning to preach on the weekends.
Lawrence and Belinda remained at Mt. Zion church until 1943 when Lawrence felt the call to go into the Army as a chaplain during World War Two. He was too old for entry but obtained a waiver of his age. There also was no quota for a United Brethren minister so he went in under the auspices of the Congregationalist Church of which there was a quota. He served in Europe, attached to the 371st Combat Engineers, participating at the famous "Battle of the Bulge" as well as many other campaigns. He attained the rank of Captain.
After returning from the service, he became Conference Superintendent of the Scioto Conference of the United Brethren Church. He was recalled to active duty in the US Air Force in 1947 where his prime responsibility was to perform military funerals for the servicemen who had been killed overseas and were being brought back for re-interment in military cemeteries. He served at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida as Hospital Chaplain, later to become Chief Chaplain on the base. He performed 86 military funerals in the space of one year, mostly at Fort Barancus, Pensacola, Florida.
In 1948, Lawrence was discharged from the USAF and returning in the middle of a conference year with the church, he accepted a pastorate of Union Chapel Evangelical United Brethren Church at Decatur, Indiana. He remained in Indiana for the remainder of his years, pastoring churches at Green Center, Indiana and Zanesville, Indiana until he retired from the pastorate in 1968. He never stopped preaching, even after retirement, as he was much sought after to hold meetings or for speaking engagements. At retirement, he and Belinda returned to live at Decatur, Indiana until 1970 when his sons talked him into buying a house on the lake at Rome City where they lived.
He authored two books, one called "Experiences of a Country Preacher", and another called "The Joy of Serving". In each book, he wrote as a testimonial to how good God had been to he and his family.
On August 30, 1982, Belinda passed from this life after having suffered a stroke two weeks earlier. She had been taken to a hospital in Lagrange, Indiana where she succumbed. She was taken back to Letart Falls, Ohio where she was buried in the family plot.
On August 27, 1983, Lawrence married Elizabeth Cramer, an old family friend. She was the daughter of George and Lydia (Drummond) Cramer of Decatur, Indiana. Elizabeth was born June 21, 1912 at Decatur, Adams County, Indiana. She was a retired school teacher who had never married. She had remained at home, caring for her aged parents until their deaths. They lived at her family farm, beside the Union Chapel Church that Lawrence had learned to love so well. A long term happiness was not to be, however, as Elizabeth died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage on February 23, 1985 at their lake home in Rome City, Indiana. She was buried in the Cramer family plot at Decatur, Indiana.
Lawrence continued to live on the farm until his death on March 25, 1991. He was taken back to Letart Falls, Ohio for burial beside his first wife, Belinda.
Lawrence was truly dedicated to his God, sometimes at the expense of his family. Many times his children could not understand why his work came first and in several of his children, it caused great rebellion. He continued, steadfast at the work of God, hoping someday they would understand. He set a great example for his children to follow.

"Alfred is dead." It cannot be;
There is no death to such as he.
Death is the door to the Father's home;
He has entered in, never to roam.
Death is the gate, which stands ajar,
and gives a glimpse of the glory far.
The gate swings wide - Lo! the Master stands,
and welcomes our little one with outstretched hands.
Death is a river, dark and wide;
He waits for us on the other side.
Death is a curtain, which divides
this earthly life from the life it hides;
The curtain lifts, he passes in,
and beckons us on, the goal to win.
"Alfred's not dead," we gladly say;
"Alfred's not dead, he just lives away."

CROSSING THE BAR
Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too fullfor sound and foam,
When that which drew me from out
the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne
of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
