She married Marion Love Coats Oct. 16, 1907 in Galesburg and he preceded her in death July 24, 1965.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
She moved to Cameron, Illinois and lived with her brother Charlie when she was about 17 years old. She got a job as a housekeeper for "Grandma Shawler" where Love Coats was working as the handy man. God, hard work and family were the cornerstones of her life. She was fiercely protective of her son, Ray, who had suffered a very high fever as a baby which rendered him mentally disabled. She even got the family to move to Jackson County, Illinois when she thought that the government would try to take Ray and put him in a home.
She and Love also moved to Rockwood, IL about 1921 where they farmed and Love traded horses and such. They like to give dances.
As far as is known she only went back to West Virginia two times after she left. Once when her father was dying and then later she and her brother Charlie went to her mother's funeral. From the few reminsces she related to her daughter, Mina Mae Coats Hobbs, life was very difficult in the hills of West Virginia and she just didn't like to think about them.
Her grandson, Gary's favorite memories of visiting her was her sugar cookies and puffed wheat and pineapple juice for breakfast.

Lena married Marion Lovel COATS [image] "Love" 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 son of Samuel Barry COATS and Sarah Emily KELLY on 16 Oct 1907 in Abington, Knox, IL. Marion was born on 16 Feb 1880 in Smith's Grove, Warren, KY. He died 6 on 24 Jul 1965 in Galesburg, Knox, IL. He was buried in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth, Warren, IL. Marion was employed as Jack-Of-All-Trades.

Love was known throughout Warren County, Illinois as the best corn picker in the county. He could pick up to 100 bushels of corn in a day. Even after he left Warren County for Rock Island, he would come back at harvest time and pick corn as he could make better money than at the factory where he was working.
He and Lena built a home in Rockwook, IL from logs that they had milled themselves. In their later years, they returned to Monmouth.

MEDICAL: A high fever as a baby rendered him mentally handicapped. He was able to function in a normal way but did not have many reasoning skills.

BIOGRAPHY: Ray Allen Coats was cared for by his mother, Lena Custer Coats, until her death in 1975 and then his sister, Mina Hobbs, took care of him until his balance became unstable. He was then moved into the Palestine Nursing Center where he thrived until succumbing to a viral infection. He had about a third grade education and loved anything to do with trains and cars. Fear that the authorities would make her institutionalize him lead his parents to keep him at home. As a consequence, he never learned anything beyond basic living skills. When Ray was born, he wasn't given a middle name. His sister, Mina, decided that he needed a middle name since she and Harry had one. She chose Allen in honor of her mother's brother, Allen Custer, who died at an early age.
