She was removed from the orphanage at the age of 6 years by a family named Bergstresser in Racine, Meigs County, Ohio. She was placed on a river boat, alone, and sent to Racine where the lady raised her, using her as a slave. She endured this until she was 16 when she left and roomed in a hotel in Racine.
She and Lewis lived in Racine until his death. She continued to live in their little house in Racine until 1939 when her house burned to the ground. Not having anything else she could do, she went to Parkersburg, West Virginia and lived with her daughter and son-in-law until her death in 1949.

Mrs. Louisa J. Custer, 78, of 820 18th Ave., Moline, died at 10:50 Saturday night at Molie Lutheran Hospital, following an illness of one week.
Services will be held at 3 tomorrow afternoon at the Hodgson Funeral Home. The Rev. Zion Robbins, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in Moline, will offciate. Burial will be in Chippiannock Cemtery.
Mrs. Custer, the former Louisa Bash, was born May 29, 1897 in Ohio Station, Ill., a daughter of David and Ann Bash. She received her education in Princeton, and was graduated from Heading College in Princeton.
She moved to Rock Island in 1909 and lived here until moving to Moline 10 years ago.
She was married to Charlie H. Custer July 12, 1906, in Abington.
Mrs. Custer was a member and past oracle of Harmony Camp, Royal Neighbors of America; Cleland circle of King's Daughters; past president of Frances Willard Parent-Teacher Assn; Edgewood Branch, WCTU; and was serving a current term as president of the local Navy Mothers Club of America.
Mrs. Custer gave private piano lessons for more than 30 years, and was employed formerly by the Regalia Company, Scharrf's of Davenport and Montgomery Ward and Co., Moline.
Survivors are two sons, Howard K. of Moline and Robert L. of Rock Island; a sister, Mrs. Elmira McMahill of Rock Island; a brother, Albert Bash, Rock Island, and nine grandchildren.
Her parents, a daughter, brother and sister preceded her in death.
Those who wish to do so may make memorial contributions to Cleland Cirlce, King's Daughters or the the Navy Mothers Club.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 today at the funeral home.

Emory Custer
Emory Custer, 82, of Toledo, died at 8:45 p.m. Monday (July 4) in Toledo after a short illness.
Mr. Custer was born in Braxton County, West Virginia, Feb. 8, 1884, a son of Louis and Rachel Jane Smith Custer. He was employed in Roseville-Crooksville area potteries a number of years before moving to Chester, W. Va., where he retired in 1952.
He was a member of Peerless Lodge 591 F AM of Crooksville, and was a 32nd degree Mason belonging to Scioto Consistory of Columbus. His wife, Ina Custer, died July 1956.
Surviving are a son, Leonard Custer of Canton; a daughter, Mrs. Leona Catlett of Perrysburg; a sister, Mrs. Lena Coats of monmouth, Ill., three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The body is at Crooksville Chapel of Cannon and Cannon Funeral Home where friends may call after noon today. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Arthur Long officiating. Burial will be in Crooksville Cemetery.

MRS. IVA CUSTER DIES IN CANTON
Mrs. Iva Custer, 68, of East Canton, former Crooksville resident, died Saturday morning at the Aultman Hospital in Canton following a year's illness.
She was born in Braxton County, W. Va., and resided in Crooksville and Chester, W. Va., before moving to Canton.
She was a member of the Chester Free Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Emory Custer, are a daughter, Mrs. Leonard Catlett of Columbus; and a son, Leonard Custer of Canton; two sisters, Mrs. Etta Cobb of Dearborn, Mich. and Mrs. Opal Hammers of Somerset; four brothers, Clinton Pennington of Zanesville; Junie Pennington of Somerset, Vaden Pennington of Somerset, and Arden Pennington of Roseville; four grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the Myers funeral home in East Canton with Rev. A. D. McGaffick officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the Crooksville Cemetery. The casket will be opened at the grave.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 o'clock on Monday evening.
