Artemecia (Lankford) Ruel was married to a Jacob W. Ruel in about 1860. They had two children, Henry Benjamin Ruel and William Ruel before Jacob joined the Confederate Army, serving with the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. He was killed in the war leaving her a widow with the two boys. After her death, all five of her children were placed in an orphanage because John's second wife didn't want to raise them.
