MILITARY: US 80th IL Inf - Cmpy A - Civil War
This is the muster information for him for Co A 80th Inf:
Hobbs,Thomas, Pvt, 37 (This would have put his birth year @ 1825), Drk Hair, Drk Eyes, Drk Complexion, married, Farmer, Joined 28 Jul 1862 in Liberty, IL by I L Mann for 3 yrs, Mustered into Service - 25 Aug 1862 Centralia by Capt Washington, Residence - Randolph Co, IL, Died of disease from being shot in the leg (gangrene) on 21 Feb 1864 Chattanooga, TN
He was probably wounded in the Battle of Mission Ridge, TN or the Battle of Lookout Mountain and evidently taken to a hospital in Chattanooga. In a book, "Woman's Work in the Civil War", page 159, there's a passage on a Mrs. John Harris who was a nurse in Chattanooga during the time Thomas would have been wounded. The atmosphere is described thusly "...She was unable to resumer her labors until the latter part of January, 1864, and then she worked with a will for the half starved soldiers in the hospitals, among whom scurvy and hospital gangrene were prevailing..." A grim picture of what Thomas must have gone through in his final moments but, hopefully, Mrs. John Harris was among his nurses since she sounds like most dedicated to her profession. In the same book, on page 167, I was finally able to find a location for the field hospital that Thomas was most likely treated in. It was located about five miles from Chattanooga in the forest. This hospital was set up by the Northwestern Sanitary Commission and there were men assigned to fell trees and keep a fire burning in the "log heaps" which served as a sort of outside fireplace. One of the nurse, a Mrs. Bickerdyke was in charge of making the soups, toast and tea for the soldiers as well as coffee and boiled mutton. A nearby derelict house was pulled down and the boards were used to construct a "bunk house" for the more serious cases and the brick from the chimney was used to make an oven so that the men had bread.
Thomas was buried in Sec C #1432 in the Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co, TN.
