  Bonjour Cousins!

October 8, 2009

Bonjour Cousins,

Allie Guidry and her team have completed another issue of our Les Guédry d'Asteur newsletter "Generations".  I know everyone will enjoy perusing this issue - devoted almost entirely to a review our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion in Bathurst, New Brunswick on August 16th.  The newsletter is filled with photographs of the Reunion and events during the Congrès Mondial.

But, while enjoying the Reunion reviews, don't miss the very interesting old newspaper articles about members of our family in the Historic Tidbits section.  And why not whip up a few Eggplant Fritters to enjoy while reading "Generations".  Can't remember how to make them?  Then you need to visit Bon Appetit on page 10 of "Generations".

We've reviewed a couple of quite interesting books in the Book Nook.  I think most will enjoy both of these.

Allie continues to make improvements in our newsletter with each issue.  "Generations" by far is one of the very best organizational newsletters published today.  Not only does it have superb content with a variety of articles about our family and Les Guédry d'Asteur, but the eye-appeal, readability and layout are outstanding.  Thanks, Allie, for another superb issue of "Generations".

Finally, we still have a few momentos left from the Reunion.  Several are shown near the end of the newsletter.  This may be the last opportunity to purchase some of these items.  Several have the Reunion logo on them, but others have only the "Les Guédry d'Asteur" wording and are not specific to the Reunion.  Conside purchasing a few of these momentos and support Les Guédry d'Asteur.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

We are planning a new feature in "Generations" and need your help.  We want to begin publishing a few older pictures of our Guédry and Petitpas family members.  (I use the name Guédry to represent all variations and spellings of the name including Guidry, Geddry, Jeddry, Labine, LaBean, Gidry, etc.   The same is true of my use of the name Petitpas.)

Please send us via email a photo or two of your grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. or a photo of a special occasion as a family reunion.  We don't need a big write-up with the photo, but identify the people in the photo that you know, the approximate date of the photo, the place where it was taken if relevant and, if significant, a pertinent fact or two of the photo (as the occasion for the photo).  You may also provide the Guédry/Petitpas family line of the folks in the photo if you wish.   We'll publish several of the photos in each issue of "Generations".

Send your photo(s) to either:

Allie Guidry at  txguidry2000@yahoo.com

or

Marty Guidry at guidryrm@cox.net

Also,  we would like to reach more our Guédry and Petitpas cousins and invite them to be a part of Les Guédry d'Asteur so they can keep up with our activities and participate in them.  You can help by sending Marty Guidry ( guidryrm@cox.net ) the name ad email address of your cousins and Guédry and Petitpas friends.

Remember that we use the names Guédry and Petitpas in the general sense to represent all variations of these surnames.  Also, don't limit your submittals to just folks with these our family surnames - we want to include anyone that has our surname in their family history (perhaps their grandmother was Guidry) or anyone that has an interest in our family.

Louisiana Reunion in 2011

You may notice on page 1 of this issue of "Generations" that Louisiane Acadie is planning a major international Acadian festival in south Louisiana during October 2011.   We will know more of the format of this festival a little later, but family reunions will be a major part of it.  AND, YES, WE WILL HAVE A GUEDRY-LABINE & PETITPAS REUNION IN LOUISIANA IN OCTOBER 2011.  Stay tuned for more information, but do make plans to attend.  It will be a fun time for all.

Merci,

Marty

Bonjour Cousins,

Online is the Summer 2009 issue of "Generations" - the newsletter of Les Guédry d'Asteur. We hope that you enjoy this extra issue of "Generations" for 2009. Our editor Allie Guidry has edited another superb issue that provides the latest information on the Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion (Bathurst, New Brunswick on Sunday, 16 August 2009). We all thank her for her continuing commitment to excellence in producing "Generations".

Also is a photograph of Charlene Guidry Lacombe, our Membership Chairperson, presenting two Guédry-related books to Dr. Gerald Patout, Librarian of the Louisiana State University at Eunice Library. Charlene donated these books to the LSUE Library as a representative of Les Guédry d'Asteur.

On 10 July 2009 the Vancouver Olympic Games Organizing Committee notified Les Guédry d'Asteur member Andre Labine of Fernie, British Columbia that he has been selected as a volunteer crew worker for the Alpine Ski Racing Events at the February 2010 Winter Olympics. Although the work will be difficult, what a great 'seat' Andre will have during the Olympics. Congratulations, Andre, on this terrific opportunity. We will all be looking for you on the television.

In November 2008 Ms. Brittany Guidry, daughter of Craig and Vickie Pontiff-Guidry, won the Miss Teen Louisiana title. Brittany is a junior at Vandebilt Catholic High School in Houma, LA. She is now in her final preparations for the Miss Teen USA Pageant being held at Paradise Island, Bahamas on 31 July. Since winning the LA title, Brittary has been very busy working at charity events as the Special Olympics of Louisiana, the Jerry Lewis Telethon and the Susan G. Komen Foundation Breast Cancer Fundraiser. Good luck, Brittany, in the Miss Teen USA Pageant.

Finally, Les Guédry d'Asteur has received nice publicity recently from several media. Articles about Les Guédry d'Asteur appeared in the "Daily Comet" newspaper (Lafourche Parish, LA) in January of this year and recently in the "Le Courrier de la Nouvelle-Écosse" newspaper (Nova Scotia) on 26 June 2009. Additionally, Radio-Canada recently aired an interview with Martin Guidry of Les Guédry d'Asteur about our upcoming Reunion.

On Tuesday, 21 July 2009 at about 8:15 am CST Martin Guidry will be interviewed on KLRZ-FM radio (LaRose, LA) about Les Guédry d'Asteur, the Congres Mondial Acadien 2009 and our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion in Bathurst. Prior to Martin's interview, Mr. A. J. LeBlanc will discuss Les Guédry d'Asteur and our Reunion in Cajun French. Those interested in hearing A. J.'s discussion can listen on the internet at CIFAFM.com. Tune in about 7:55 am CST. It is uncertain at this time if Martin's interview will be broadcast on the internet. If so, it will be on KLRZFM.com and will begin about 8:15 am CST. For those in southeast Louisiana KLRZ-FM is at 100.3 on your radio dial and for our Nova Scotia cousins CIFA-FM is at 104.1 on the radio dial.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Bathurst,

Marty

July 7, 2009

Bonjour à vous tous,

The Guédry-Labine and Petitpas Reunion is very near - just about a month away.  We have completed all of the planning and have the schedule set now.  Our team has put together a very entertaining and informative reunion while still setting aside a lot of time for each of us to meet our cousins and enjoy the time together.  I want to thank Lorn Guidry and Jason Guidry in Bathurst for doing the yoeman's work of lining up the facilities and securing the entertainment.  They have stepped in and put together a great facility and agenda.

We are working hard at this time to issue another edition of "Generations" just before the Reunion.  I believe we will make that deadline.  Look for it soon.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion is near and our program is excellent.  Our only concern is the slow rate that folks are registering.  I am sure part of this is the sluggish (no, terrible) economy.  Also, I know folks are concerned about housing in the Acadian Peninsula; however, I have been assured that housing is still quite available.  And New Brunswick is not the 'roots' to us Acadians as Nova Scotia is where we 'began' and our history lies.  On a positive side for those in the U.S. - the American dollar is strengthening on the Canadian dollar meaning this will be a less expensive vacation.  If we had the Reunion right now, our Canadian cousins would outnumber our American cousins almost three to one.  I encourage you to reconsider attending our Reunion.  Each Congres Mondial has been an unforgettable experience and this one promises to be the same.

And please let your family, relatives and friends that are interested in the Guidry, Guedry, Gaidry, Guildry, Geddry, Jeddry, Gedry, Jedry, Labine, LaBean, Petitpas, Pitts and Perro families (and other variations of our name) know about our Reunion.  I only have email addresses for a small percentage of our total family.  We need your help in reaching everyone and giving them the opportunity to meet and join our Family.   A Registration Form is on our Guédry-Labine Family Website at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guedrylabinefamily/reunionregistration2009.htm

Don't forget our incentive for register early.   We will give each family (or individual) registrant that registers on or before 15 July 2009 a set of two CD's containing music performed by approximately 50 musicians of our Guédry family.  The music ranges from Cajun to Acadian, swamp pop to rock-n-roll, west coast swing, blues and gospel to religious, heavy metal, electronic and rap.  We have a broad range of musical talent in our family and this is your chance to sample it all.  I believe you'll be impressed with the selections.

FAMILY AND REUNION SOUVENIRS

Cindy Herdt, our Sales Committee Chairperson, has been very active this year designing and ordering momentos of our family and of our Reunion experience for folks to purchase.  Some will only be sold at the Reunion; however, we are offering some items early so folks can purchase them and bring them (wear them) to the Reunion or leave them at home due to travel limits.  Not all items are specific to the Reunion; some are general to our family.  The quality of these items is well above what you envision as a souvenir.  You can order some of the items on the Merchandise Page of our website at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guedrylabinefamily/merchandise.html

We have added PayPal to the website so you can pay that way or with a check through the mails.

RECENT NEWS

If you plan to attend other events associated with the Congres Mondial such as the concerts, you can purchase your tickets online at this weblink:

http://www.billetterieacces.ca/

For those in Louisiana wishing to travel with a group to the Congres Mondial, History Break Tours of Carencro, LA is having a fully catered tour by bus.  The bus will depart from Lafayette, LA on 6 August 2009 and return to Lafayette on 28 August 2009.    You do have the option to fly to Bangor and join the bus there on 9 August.  There is flexibility in the bus schedule so you can attend your family reunions and other activities that you would like to do.  The package includes 22 days of motorcoach transportation, 21 nights of accomodations, 21 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 4 dinners and luggage handling for one suitcase and lot of fun.  Call one of these telephone numbers soon to reserve your spot:  337-288-2681, 337-394-2258 or 337-298-8965.

So much for all of the formal planning.  So what can you do:

One - attend the Reunion and meet your cousins - talk with them, share your experiences and family, view the displays, get excited about our family.

Two - share something with all of us - a big part of our Reunion is the display area:  some displays are rather formal; others are very informal; all are informative and interesting.  Why not bring a display to the Reunion?  It can be as formal as you like - a complete display board with some aspect of your family presented or it can be very informal as copies of some interesting photographs or family documents, an interesting object associated with our family as a hand-crafted instrument, an old map showing family land grants, a copy of an old diary, a sportscard collection of family athletes, family correspondence from the war years, etc.  Bring it along and let others enjoy seeing it.

The Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick is a truly French region where Acadian French is the predominant language.  In that tradition we are planning a bilingual reunion with both French and English segments.  Don't worry if you are not bilingual as we are designing it so you will be able to follow and understand.  Areas that will be predominantly French include the French Rosary, the Cajun and Acadian music and the presentation by Sister Corinne LaPlante.   (An English outline of Sister LaPlante's presentation will be available.)   Areas that will be predominantly English will include the remaining presentations and the Master of Ceremony comments.  The opening Mass will be bilingual.

Father Benoit (Ben) Drapeau will celebrate our opening Mass with us.  I had the honor of meeting Father Drapeau two weeks at the 50th anniversary of his ordination.  Interestingly, he was ordained in Bathurst in 1959 and has family living only two blocks from the Holy Family Church.  You would never know Father Drapeau has been a priest for 50 years.  He is so vibrant and active, his wit is unbelievable.  On meeting him, you feel like you've known him forever.  Father Drapeau grew up in New Brunswick and was ordained in Bathurst as a Eudist Missionary Father.  He then served in New York, south Louisiana and is now in Phoenix, Arizona.  He is looking forward to celebrating the Mass with us.  The link below has a short article and photograph taken during the 50th Anniversary Celebration in Rayne, LA.  Our own Jeanette Guidry Leger was instrumental in organizing this wonderful event.

http://www.raynetoday.com/content/former-pastor-honored

Shortly before Mass begins, Ms. Pierrette Guidry of Colorado will lead us in the French Rosary.  For those that have not heard or participated in the French Rosary, it is quite beautiful and moving.  Plan on arriving by 8:15 am so that you can participate in the French Rosary, our unique entrance to the altar and the bilingual Mass with Father Ben.  After Mass, we will all journey to Danny's Inn for registration and a fun-filled day with our cousins.

The agenda for our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion includes:

* 8:30 am - Opening Mass at Holy Family (Sainte Famille) Catholic  Church
(430 St. Peter Avenue; Bathurst, NB)
-   French Rosary led by Pierrette Guidry of Colorado  (8:15 am)

                  How Similar Are They

*  4:30 pm - Break

*  4:45 pm - Closing Ceremony

Throughout the day we may have a special magician mingling among us. In addition, we'll have family history displays in the back of the room and a sales booth where you can purchase items related to our family and our reunion.  We will have several breaks during the day so that everyone can meet each other and can visit the displays and sales booth.

Here's a couple of websites on Larry Miller:

http://members.cox.net/jireaux/larry.htm

http://www.accordions.com/bonteecajun/

We'll have a superb buffet lunch about noon at the Conference Center.  It'll be a Hot & Cold Dinner Buffet that includes roast beef smothered in peppercorn gravy, sweet & sour meatballs, lasagna, chicken wings, potato casserole, coleslaw, tossed green salad, carrot salad, rolls, carrot cake, cherry cheesecake, fresh fruit salad, coffee and tea.  The cost of the buffet  will be approximately $25.00 per person.

It is not too early to secure lodging.  Remember, unlike airline reservations, you can easily cancel hotel/motel and rental car reservations within a few days of arrival with no penalty.  So don't procrastinate in making hotel/motel reservations and/or rental car reservations.  Lodging space and rental cars will be very limited in the Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick, but they are still available in the Bathurst area - especially bed and breakfasts and cabins.  The website below contains a number of motels, hotels and bed & breakfasts in the Bathurst area.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Bathurst and enjoying a wonderful Reunion together.

Bonjour Cousins,

Les Guédry d'Asteur has been invited to be one of the families participating in the "Fete de Famille" at Longfellow- vangeline State Park in St. Martinville, LA on June 22, 2009 from noon to 3:00 pm.

We will have a demonstration family reunion with Guédry family exhibits and a display table. We need members of our family to attend this free event and enjoy the small mini-reunion.

The PRESS RELEASE below discusses the mini-reunion and why we are doing it. Briefly, Louisiana is making a major bid to host the 2014 Congres Mondial - which will be a great boost to our Acadian poplulation. The "Fete de Famille" will showcase Louisiana's commitment and ability to again host the Congres Mondial. Judges of the Congres will be present. We will need people to attend and participate in the event by just being there and enjoying the festivities. And it is all FREE.

If you have an afternoon free on Monday, June 22nd, please trek to St. Martinville and lend your support to Louisiana's bid for the 2014 Congres Mondial. The Congres will announcement the winning site in August 2009. We are competing with Quebec and with the Madawaska, Maine region.

Thanks,

Marty

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local organization invites public to Congrès bid event

Lafayette, LA The organization Louisiane-Acadie is encouraging community members to participate in an event for the 2014 Congrès   mondial acadien bid. As part of the presentation, organizers will host a party dubbed "Fête de Famille", which will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Monday, June 22 at the Longfellow-Evangeline State Park in St. Martinville.

This unique event will showcase various aspects of the planned programs for the 2014 Congrès.  Some of the scheduled activities include a Cajun jam, a simulated family reunion, cooking demonstrations, lectures, a performance by Renaissance Cadienne and more.  However, this effort will only be effective if people participate. "Making Louisiana's presentation memorable is key, and we invite anyone interested in having a good time, meeting new people and contributing to this state-wide effort to come join us at Longfellow-Evangeline State Park," announced Louisiane-Acadie vice-president Elaine Clément. "Bring your mother, father, kids, grand-kids and venez passer un bon temps!" Admission is free.
The Congrès mondial acadien (World Acadian Congress) is a gathering of all the Acadians, of the world and it happens but once every five years.  It's a time to meet Acadian cousins, to discover Acadian areas and to bridge the gap that was created by forced separation when the Acadians were deported from Acadie over 250 years ago.  Louisiana hosted a successful Congrès in 1999, which was part of the yearlong Francofête celebration. The 2009 Congrès mondial acadien will be held in the Acadian Peninsula in New Brunswick, Canada.

June 5, 2009

Bonjour à vous tous,

I hope everyone is enjoying the latest issue of "Generations" (Spring 2009) edited by Allie Guidry of Virginia.  Our newsjournal continues to be one of the best among all genealogical societies.  Allie does a tremendous job selecting material, laying out the material in an eye-appealing way and using superb colors and illustrations throughout the journal.  Thanks, Allie, for producing a superb journal for us all.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion is fast approaching and we have now completed preparations.  We have an excellent program with an excellent mix of Cajun and Acadian music, informative talks on the local Acadian region, on our family history and on the Cajun and Acadian cultures, superb table displays and lots of time to meet and enjoy your cousins.  Unfortunately, pre-registrations have come in very slow.  If we had the Reunion right now, our Canadian cousins would outnumber our American cousins almost three to one.  I strongly encourage everyone to register now so we can better prepare for the Reunion.  A lot of our preparations is based on our best guess of the number of attendees.  We need your help to firm up this number.

As an incentive to register early, we will give each family (or individual) registrant that registers on or before 15 July 2009 a set of two CD's containing music performed by approximately 50 musicians of our Guédry family.

Cindy Herdt of Entiat, Washington, Chairperson of our Sales Committee,  has designed and selected several momentos for the Reunion.   We will have these for sale at the Reunion.  They include pens, key chains, T-shirts, lapel pins, notepads, totebags and other items.  I have seen several of these and they are quite nice - definitely a grade above the 'normal' items you see at Reunions.  We also may have a couple of books about our families for sale.  Some of the items will have the Reunion logo on them and others will have only the "Les Guédry d'Asteur" wording on them so that they will not 'age' with the end of the Reunion.  Some of the items currently can be purchased on our Guédry-Labine Family Website at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guedrylabinefamily/merchandise.html

Additional items will be added shortly.

So much for all of the formal planning.  So what can you do:

One - attend the Reunion and meet your cousins - talk with them, share your experiences and
family, view the displays, get excited about our family.

Two - share something with all of us - a big part of our Reunion is the display area:  some
displays are rather formal; others are very informal; all are informative and interesting.
Why not bring a display to the Reunion?  It can be as formal as you like - a complete
display board with some aspect of your family presented or it can be very informal as
copies of some interesting photographs or family documents, an interesting object
associated with our family as a hand-crafted instrument, an old map showing family land
grants, a copy of an old diary, a sportscard collection of family athletes, family
correspondence from the war years, etc.

Areas that will be predominantly French include the French Rosary, the French Mass, the Cajun and Acadian music and the presentation by Sister Corinne LaPlante.   (An English outline of Sister LaPlante's presentation will be available.)   Areas that will be predominantly English will include the remaining presentations and the Master of Ceremony comments.

For Louisianians interested in a Bus Excursion to New Brunswick -
The Acadian Memorial and CAFA (Confederation of Acadian Families Association) are teaming together to sponsor a bus trip to the 2009 Congres Mondial Acadian to be held on August 7 thru August 23rd in the Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick. For those who are interested in joining the trip, call (337) 298-8965, (337) 288-2681 or (337) 394-2258.

Bonjour Cousins,

Planning for our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion is progressing on track.  Lorn Guidry and Jason Guidry in Bathurst, New Brunswick have really been helping organize the Reunion.

Our Reunion promises to be another great experience to learn about our family and meet your many cousins from throughout North America.  Folks from all over North America are attending the Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion.  Registrations include Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, California, Virginia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and other locations.

Recently the Congrès Mondial Acadien sent us a check for $1000 to help with our Reunion funding.  This money is most welcome and will be used to secure speakers and  musicians for our Reunion.  Thanks to Elaine Clement, Vice-President of Les Guédry d'Asteur, and Rachelle Dugas of Congrès Mondial Acadien for helping us secure this funding.

Cindy Herdt (Washington), Chairperson of our Sales Committee, has begun designing and ordering momentos for the Reunion.   We will have a variety of  momentos for sale including pens, key chains, T-shirts, lapel pins, magnets, notepads, totebags and other items.  I have seen several of these and they are quite nice - definitely a grade above the 'normal' items you see at Reunions.  We also may have a couple of books on the family for sale.  Some of the items will have the Reunion logo on them and others will have only the "Les Guédry d'Asteur" wording on them so that they will not 'age' with the Reunion.  Within the next month we will begin selling some of the items on our Guédry-Labine Family Website at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guedrylabinefamily/merchandise.html

Currently at this webpage you can order several items including a number of things having our new Guédry family crest (in the name variation that you desire).  Check in at the Sales website and order early.

Finally, I encourage everyone to register early and assist us in planning the Reunion.  If circumstances prevent you from attending and you have registered, we will refund your registration fees on request.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

Unlike Nova Scotia in 2004 where family reunions and CMA activities occurred over the entire province, in 2009 all reunions and CMA activities will occur within the Acadian Peninsula. Bathurst is at the southern end of the Peninsula and Caraquet is near the northern edge. The driving distance between Bathurst and Caraquet is only 41 miles (66 kilometers).

As is true throughout the Acadian Peninsula, accomodations in the Bathurst area are limited. To see the major motels and hotels in the Bathurst area, click on the website link below, go to "Visitors Information" in the left column and click on "Accomodations". This website also has a lot of information on the history of Bathurst as well as interesting sites to explore.

http://www.bathurst.ca/english/home/index.cfm?id=156

The 2009 CMA website has an excellent page on accomodations within the Acadian Peninsula. Visit it by clicking on this link:

http://www.cma2009.ca/?page=hebergement&start=0

[Remember unlike airline reservations that have signicant cancellation penalties, motels/hotels and rental cars generally allow cancellation up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival with no penalty. So do not hesitate to book your motel/hotel reservation and rental car reservation now even if you are now absolutely sure you will attend.]

For those traveling to New Brunswick by air, here are some airport options:

Bathurst has a commercial airport. It is small with only a couple of flights a day to and from Montreal.

http://www.airbathurst.com/en/# (Bathurst Airport Website)

The nearest large commercial airport is Moncton. The are numerous daily flights to and from this airport. The highway distance from Moncton to Bathurst is 138 miles (about 2.5 to 3 hours by car). Canadian highways generally are very nice.

http://www.gmia.ca/ (Moncton Airport Website)

The Fredericton Airport is a medium-sized commercial airport and is just a bit further from Bathurst at 157 miles. It has 6-8 arriving and departing flights daily.

http://yfcmobile.ca/ (Fredericton Airport Website)

The Halifax, Nova Scotia Airport is a large commercial airport that you may want to consider if you are planning on doing any sightseeing in Nova Scotia during the trip. The Halifax Airport is 218 miles from Bathurst (about 4.5 - 5 hours by car).

[Note: During the drive from Halifax to Bathurst, you will pass within 1/2 mile of the old Acadian Beaubassin Village and within 2 miles of Fort Beausejour from which the first Acadians were exiled on July 28, 1755. They are definitely worth a visit. Beaubassin is located right behind the current Nova Scotia Visitor Center at the Nova Scotia - New Brunswick border and Fort Beausejour is just over the border in New Brunswick. They both have nice displays to view. You'll also pass through Truro which was the area of old Cobequid, Acadia and through Moncton where the Centre d'Etudes Acadiennes (Center for Acadian Studies) is located.]

The official New Brunswick Tourism Website is at the link below. You can learn about interesting locations, sites and activities at this website. By clicking on the word "Guides" in the left column of the page, you can order a free 2008 Experience New Brunswick Vacation Planner" which is excellent.

Bonjour Mes Cousins,

On Sunday, March 8, 2009 from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm we're having a meeting of Les Guédry d'Asteur at the Calcasieu Parish Library (301 W. Claude Street) in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Lake Charles is at the southwestern corner of Louisiana in Calcasieu Parish. It is the home of many prairie Acadians including lots of Guidry's. These Acadians originally settled to the east - primarily in the Opelousas and Attakapas regions near the area between present-day Opelousas, LA to St. Martinville, LA. They raised cattle on vast vacheries (open ranges) containing waist high grasses blowing in the wind like the waves of the ocean. Gradually many of these Acadians moved westward - settling the prairies from the eastern edges to the Lake Charles area where "No Man's Land" began. "No Man's Land" was the disputed border between the Spanish and United States - an area settled by robbers, murderers and other men sought by the law. Later with the need for labor in southeast Texas during WWI (energy businesses, ports and WWII (oil refineries, ports), many Acadians continued the westward migration and made southeast Texas in the Orange - Port Arthur - Beaumont area a true "New Acadie".

This is the third of a series of monthly meetings that we are having in various locations of south Louisiana and southeast Texas. Our goal is to meet in locations more accessible to family members and to visit areas where our Guédry family members reside. Areas being considered are St. Martinville 12/6/2008), Houma, Cutoff-Galiano area (1/24/2009), Lake Charles (3/8/2009), Lafayette and the Beaumont, TX area. If you would like to help set up a meeting in your area, please let me know by emailing me at guidryrm@cox.net.

GUEDRY-LABINE & PETITPAS REUNION - BATHURST, NEW BRUNSWICK - 16 AUG 2009

The Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion will be on Saturday, August 16, 2009 in the Conference Centre at Danny's Inn in Bathurst, New Brunswick. The website for Danny's Inn is:

http://www.dannysinn.com/site/AboutUs.aspx

We will begin about 8:30 am and have activities until 5:00 pm. We are working on the the last few activities for the agenda. Once we have secured all commitments, we'll send it out to everyone. Activities will include talks, music, displays, etc as well as time to mingle and get to know your cousins.

It is not too early to secure lodging. Remember, unlike airline reservations, you can easily cancel hotel/motel and rental car reservations within a few days of arrival with no penalty. So don't procrastinate in making hotel/motel reservations and/or rental car reservations. Lodging space and rental cars will be very limited in the Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick. The website below contains a number of motels, hotels and bed & breakfasts in the Bathurst area.

If you have ideas or thoughts about what Les Guédry d'Asteur should be doing (at the 2009 Reunion, a project we could do, etc.), please e-mail me at guidryrm@cox.net and let us know.

Let's get together, renew old acquaintances and start looking forward to our future plans.

* Opening and welcome
* Special Presentation on Origins of Guédry family in Louisiana
* Membership Report (Charlene Lacombe)

Everyone's welcome and encouraged to attend. It'll be a lot of fun. Bring a friend or relative and let them learn of all that our family is doing.

So come and join us for this meeting.

January 28, 2009

Bonjour Mes Cousins,

A large group of Guidry's packed the meeting room at the South Lafourche Parish Library in Galliano for the Les Guidry d'Asteur meeting on January 24, 2009.

Marty Guidry welcomed everyone and discussed the origins and purpose of Les Guidry d'Asteur. Les Guidry d'Asteur was founded in 1998 to organize the 1999 Guidry Family Reunion in Houma, LA as part of the Congres Mondial Acadien. Since that time, it serves to bring together all Guedry's worldwide and to provide an avenue for sharing historical and genealogical information about the Guedry family. The name "Guedry" and "Guidry" includes all spelling variations of our family surname as well as our maternal family the Petitpas.

In a superb presentation Velton Guidry of Galliano, LA discussed the origins of the several lines of Guidry's from lower Bayou Lafourche. Throughout his discussion were interesting family stories and unique tidbits of information. Velton has spent his life researching the Guidry family within the geographical confines of lower Bayou Lafourche. Pens were busily writing as Velton moved from one Guidry line to another during his presentation.

Our Membership report showed that currently we have members from thirteen states (AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, LA, MA, MI, MN, MS, TX, VA, VT) and four Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec). A quick check on the internet confirms that we have at least one Guedry family in every state of the United States and most of the Canadian provinces. Wouldn't it be nice to have that distribution as members of Les Guidry d'Asteur?

With 2009 now here it is time to renew your membership in Les Guidry d'Asteur. Our dues are very low ($6 for individuals and $10 for a family). Dues are the primary income source for Les Guidry d'Asteur. All of our funds are used to provide resources for our family as Guedry family gatherings and aiding and encouraging research into the Guedry family history and genealogy. These activities include family reunions, purchasing and placing Guedry genealogy books in key libraries in the U.S. and Canada, publishing a Guedry Family Cookbook, erecting historical markers at Lunenburg and St. Alphonse and developing a Guedry Family Crest. (Remember if you register for the 2009 Guedry Reunion at Bathurst, your registration fee includes your 2009 dues.)

A Membership Application is available at this link for those wishing to mail in their dues:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guedrylabinefamily/membership.html

(If the link does not work on your computer, copy it with your mouse and paste it into the address line of your web browser as Internet Explorer)

Treasurer Chuck Guidry reported that Les Guidry d'Asteur has approximately $2700 in the bank. Most of these funds will be used for the upcoming Guedry Reunion in Bathurst.

The Guedry Reunion will be Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Danny's Inn in Bathurst, New Brunswick. We will have a full day of activities beginning with an opening Mass at Holy Family Church in Bathurst at 8:30 am. After Mass we will reunite at Danny's Inn at 10:00 am for a day of music, historical, cultural and genealogical presentations, dinner buffet, displays on the Guedry and Petitpas families and plenty of time to meet your cousins.  We will end the Reunion about 4:30 pm with a unique closing ceremony. The  registration fee for the Guedry Reunion is $20 for an individual and $40 for a family. The  dinner buffet at noon is extra (cost will be approximately $25 per person and is optional)

These two website links provide information on the Guedry Reunion, on activities of the Congres Mondial, on airports near Bathurst and on accomodations near Bathurst and the Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick.

Allie Guidry plans to publish a new edition of our newsletter "Generations" in February 2009. It will be filled with interesting articles and tidbits including a discussion of Guidry's (Guildry, Labine) who served as voyageurs for the Canadian trading companies in the late 1700's, recent research on Guedry's who were deported from Halifax to North Carolina in late 1755, a biographical sketch of an influential Louisiana Guidry and much more.

Becky Boggess continues to update and enhance the Guedry-Labine Family Website. When you have a few moments, surf over to it and peruse the many interesting articles, all prior newsletters and a wealth of information on our Guedry and Petitpas families. It can be found at this link:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guedrylabinefamily/

The meeting closed after a brief question and answer session on varous aspects of researching the history and genealogy of the Guedry family.

We are always seeking articles for our newsletter "Generations". Every line of the Guedry and Petitpas families has an interesting history with many unique tales. Please consider writing an article about some aspect of your Guedry or Petitpas line. Perhaps you have an interesting story about a grandparent or an uncle in your family. Or perhaps you have a recent research discovery on our family to share with everyone. We would all like to hear it. Length or brevity does not matter. If you would like us to edit the article for readability, we'll be happy to do that. Send your article to our newsletter editor Allie Guidry at txguidry2000@yahoo.com or myself at guidryrm@cox.net.

Thanks,

Marty

As is true throughout the Acadian Peninsula, accomodations in the Bathurst area are limited. To see the major motels and hotels in the Bathurst area, click on the website link below, go to "Visitors Information" in the left column and click on "Accomodations". This website also has a lot of information on the history of Bathurst as well as interesting sites to explore.

It is small with only a couple of flights a day to and from Montreal.

http://www.airbathurst.com/en/#
(Bathurst Airport Website)

The nearest large commercial airport is Moncton. The are numerous daily flights to and from this airport. The highway distance from Moncton to Bathurst is 138 miles (about 2.5 to 3 hours by car). Canadian highways generally are very nice.

http://www.gmia.ca/
(Moncton Airport Website)

The Fredericton Airport is a medium-sized commercial airport and is just a bit further from Bathurst at 157 miles. It has 6-8 arriving and departing flights daily.

http://yfcmobile.ca/
(Fredericton Airport Website)

As we have additional information on our Guedry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion and on the Congres Mondial, we will send it to everyone.

Hope to see everyone in Bathurst on August 16th.

December 6, 2008

Bonjour Mes Cousins,

On Saturday, December 6, 2008 from 10:30 am until 12:00 noon we're having a meeting of Les Guidry d'Asteur at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, LA. We'll meet in the upstairs conference room at the Memorial. [FOR DIRECTIONS - SEE BELOW]

In 1765 one of the earliest groups of Acadians to reach Louisiana was settled by the Spanish in the St. Martinville area. Today this area is often recognized as the heart of the Acadian region where French is still spoken widely.

Before coming up to the 2nd floor of the Memorial for the meeting, venture onto the pavillion behind the Memorial and view our Guedry Crest on the patio. After the meeting we will enjoy lunch together a local restaurant near the town squaure and then return to the Memorial to tour the Heritage Center and the Acadian Memorial itself.

For anyne not familiar with the St. Martinville area that would like to visit the old St. Michael's Cemetery (just across Bayou Teche from the Memorial) and/or the town square around St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church, please let me know and I'll be happy to arrive early (ca. 9:00 am) and provide a brief tour of these areas.

The website for the Acadian Memorial is at this link:

http://www.acadianmemorial.org/english/index.html

This begins the first of a series of monthly meetings that we are having in various locations of south Louisiana and southeast Texas. Our goal is to meet in locations more accessible to family members and to visit areas where our Guedry family members reside. Other areas being considered are Houma, Cutoff-Galiano area, Lake Charles and the Beaumont, TX area. If you would like to help set up a meeting in your area, please let me know by emailing me at
guidryrm@cox.net.

GUEDRY-LABINE & PETITPAS REUNION - BATHURST, NEW BRUNSWICK - 16 AUG 2009

The Guedry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion will be on Saturday, August 16, 2009 in the Conference Centre at Danny's Inn in Bathurst, New Brunswick. We will be sending out registration information very shortly.

The website for Danny's Inn is:

http://www.dannysinn.com/site/AboutUs.aspx

We will begin about 8:30 am and have activities until 5:00 pm. More on the agenda, activities and displays is forthcoming and will include formal sessions with music, presentations, etc. as well as time to mingle and get to know your cousins.

"GENERATIONS" - FALL 2008 EDITION - PUBLISHED

Our Fall 2008 issue of "Generations" was published in Ocotber and sent by email to all on our Distribution List. Shortly it will be on our website. Check it out. I believe you will enjoy the articles and be proud of the superb quality of our newsletter. The link to our Guedry- abine Family website is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guedrylabinefamily/newsletters.html

If this link on your screen is larger than one line, you may need to copy it using your mouse and then paste it into the URL (Address) line of your web browser (Google or Internet Explorer).

GUEDRY CREST

We now have a Guedry Crest for everyone in the family to use.

It tells the story of our Guedry family from its French origins through its settlement in Acadia, being deported throughout the Atlantic area and final resettlement across the Western Hemisphere. It will be the official crest of our Guedry family and will represent all variations (spellings) of our name. We have a descriptive paper that discusses the meanings of the symbols and colors on the crest and lists the numerous name variations represented by the Guedry Crest.

If you have ideas or thoughts about what Les Guidry d'Asteur should be doing (at the 2009 Reunion, a project we could do, etc.), please e-mail me at guidryrm@cox.net and let us know.

Let's get together, renew old acquaintances and start looking forward to our future plans.

The tentative agenda for the meeting is:

* Opening and welcome

* Membership Report (Charlene Lacombe)

* Financial Report (Chuck Guidry)

* Update on Guedry Crest (Marty Guidry)

* Our French Language/Culture Lesson (Elaine Clement)

* Plans for the August 2009 Guedry-Labine and Petitpas Reunion in New Brunswick (location, activities, etc.)

* An Interesting Personality from Our Family

* Sales Committee Report (Wayne Simoneaux / Marty Guidry)

* Genealogy Committe Report (Daryl LaBine / Marty Guidry)

* Newsletter Update (Allie Guidry / Marty Guidry)

* Website Update (Becky Boggess / Marty Guidry)

* Other Business (new Guedry-Labine projects)

* Closing and Lunch

So let's gather together for some comradeship and discussion on what we can do as a family association. We need your ideas. If you can't attend, please email me and let me know what you'd like to see Les Guidry d'Asteur do for the family.

Everyone's welcome and encouraged to attend. It'll be a lot of fun. Bring a friend or relative and let them learn of all that our family is doing.

So come and join us for this meeting.

Laissez les bon temps roulet!

DIRECTIONS TO DECEMBER 6th MEETING:

From I-10 take the I-49/US-90E exit (Exit 103) and go south (toward Lafayette). This is often called the Evangeline Thruway. Continue on the Thruway past the Lafayette Airport until you reach Broussard, LA (about 10 miles). At Broussard turn left onto LA Highway 182 (also called E. Main Street). Continue about 0.8 miles and then turn left onto LA Highway 96. Continue on LA Highway 96 for about 7.4 miles to St. Martinville. In St. Martinville LA Highway 96 becomes W. Port Street. At the intersection of W. Port Street (LA (^) with S. Main Street, continue straight unto Evangeline Blvd. Continue to the end of Evangeline Blvd and turn left on S. New Market Street (at the Evangeline Oak). Park in any of the designated parking spots. Go into the Acadian Memorial (the second building from the Evangeline Oak) and tell the receptionist that you are here for the Guedry family meeting. Go out the back door of the Memorial to the Pavillion. (Don't forget to see our Guedry Crest near the gate of the Pavillion). Go up the stairs to the balcony, enter the second floor of the Memorial and go to the conference room in the back. We'll meet in this conference room.

If coming from the Houma area to the south using US-90, turn right onto LA Highway 182 at Broussard and follow the above instructions from that point.

October 29, 2008

Allie Guidry and the editorial team have done another outstanding job with the Fall 2008 issue of "Generations". I believe you will really enjoy this issue with articles by several of our members. Glance through the contents on Page 1 and I am sure that you'll find an article or two that you cannot wait to read.

As we approach our 2009 Reunion on August 16th in Bathurst, New Brunswick, you should begin considering making your housing reservations. "Generations' contains lots of information on the limited housing in the Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick. Remember, unlike airline reservations which have a penalty to change or cancel, motels have no penalty to change or cancel a reservation until just before the day of arrival (usually within 24 hours of arrival). So don't hesitate to make a housing reservation even if you are not sure of the exact dates that you will need. Rental car reservations also have no penalty to change or cancel until just before the day of rental.

The nearest large airport to Bathurst is at Moncton, New Brunswick (about 140 miles to Bathurst by car). You might also consider flying into Halifax, Nova Scotia (approximately 230 miles to Bathurst by car). Both drives are very nice and quite interesting with sites to see on the way. Bathurst has a small airport with two flights daily to and from Montreal.

So, as the cold weather approaches and the fireplace softly warms the room, sit back and enjoy this superb issue of "Generations".

August 27, 2008

Bonjour Cousins,

On 14 August 2008 Elaine Clément, daughter of Charles Clement and Enid Guidry Clement, received the distiguished Acadian Heritage Preservation Award at Vermilionville in Lafayette, LA. Elaine Clément is the Publicity Chairperson of Les Guidry d'Asteur and very active in our association. She works with the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL) to preserve the French language in Louisiana's Acadian community.  Please join me in congratulating Elaine on this outstanding award and thank her for her service to the Acadian community.

We also congratulate Alana Catherine Immel, daugher of Peter and Alexa John and of Jeff & Rachel Immel, on being crowned Miss Crowley, Louisiana 2008. Alana is the great-granddaughter of Rose Guidry Shreve and granddaughter of Rose May Shreve Corman.

Attached to this memo is the Guédry Crest and an explanation of the meaning of the colors and components of the Guédry Crest. This is the official crest of Les Guidry d'Asteur and all of its members. It can be used by all of us on clothing, stationary, etc. The Guédry Crest tells the story of our Guédry family from its French origins, its settlement at Merigueche and life with the Mi'kmaq people, its struggle through the years of exile and finally its survival and expansion throughout North America and Europe.

Last Friday, 15 August 2008, National Day of the Acadians, the Guédry Crest was unveiled on the Plaza of the Acadian Memorial. The Guédry Crest is one of several crests of Acadian families displayed in the Plaza of the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana. Each of the crests are artistically done in ceramic on the Plaza. See the attached photographs of the Guédry Crest on the Plaza.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Bathurst in August 2009,

Marty

Bonjour Cousins,

Several folks have asked if we could have several items with our Guédry crest available for sale before the Reunion. Clicking on the link below will open our website containing a variety of items including t-shirts, caps, mugs, clocks, magnets, buttons, postcards, prints, note cards and stickers with the Guédry crest on them. You may order directly from the website. Your purchases will help Les Guidry d'Asteur continue implementing programs to support our family and its heritage.

http://cafepress.com/guedry

Furthermore, if you would like to have a variation of the Guédry surname (as Labine, Geddry, etc.) on the upper banner, please email me what name you would like and we'll create a store with that surname on the crest for you. You can then purchase items with that surname.

We hope this gives everyone the opportunity to obtain desired gifts, clothing, etc with our Guédry crest.

Thanks to Rachel Hardee for developing and managing our Guédry crest store.

Merci,
