My SPECK
lineage starting with
GODFREY
AUGUSTUS SPECK
Migration Pattern:
Germany –> MD –> VA –> OH –> IL –>
IA –> NE –> CO –> CA
This
SPECK lineage concerns itself with folks descended from Godfrey Augustus
SPECK, who arrived in America courtesy of a British
"recruiter" looking for “volunteers” to help fight those “revolting
colonials” back in the 1770s. Whether or not Godfrey actually fought in
the American Revolution is unknown, but he settled here and founded our SPECK
line.
If
you want additional information please contact me Gary SPECK
There
is a small group of “cousins” all working on this particular family line. Some of them also have related websites,
which will be listed below. If you are
related to this line of Specks and you are not currently a member of our group,
also please contact me.
This
online lineage outline concerns itself only with my direct line (noted
in RED). Additional information on my line, including sources, is
available if you are an interested family.
Links to other family pages are noted THUS.
This
is a work in progress, and together we can make it grow! To paraphrase the old Nissan commercial… Genealogy
is a Journey…Enjoy the Ride.
Have fun on your SPECK adventure.
Our
“first” Specks, Godfrey Augustus SPECK and Sarah
TOWNSEND had 8 children.
Listed with the appropriate children are links to guide you to others
researching the same line, as well as additional information on those
appropriate lines. General information
on Godfrey Augustus Speck’s line can also be found at Cousin Darlene’s site. The Small Family
Homepage.

Notes for GODFREY AUGUSTUS SPECK:
“...Godfrey Augustus
Speck, as was the custom of his country, learned a trade. Then by the custom of
his country he was compelled to travel for one year to gain information to
benefit him in his trade, such people were called traveling journeymen. This
was at the time of war between the United Colonies and King George III of
England, who contracted with the Hessian King for soldiers at thirty-five
dollars per head. A gentleman came up to him (Godfrey) and asked if he was
going to stop at the inn. He proved to be a recruiting officer and he
decoyed him (Godfrey) to the wharf to see a big vessel, then they run him up a
plank on board and by some means unknown he was landed in Baltimore, Maryland
in 1774. He then settled in Baltimore and was married in 1779 to Sarah Townsend
who was born in Virginia, September 10, 1763.” [The Genealogy of
the Speck and Benjamin Reed Families from 1754 to 1900, By Isaac G. SPECK]
“We can't prove that he
was recruited and sent here for the war (though he was here to marry Sarah
Townsend before the war was over).” DSG Jan 09 1999 (e-mail
correspondence)
“However, in my study of
the years before the war was declared, there were British regiments being sent
here for many years and especially after the Boston Massacre in 1770 and the
Boston Tea Party in 1773...” DSG Jul 24 2000 (Gary’s note...This could
account for him being sent over prior to the actual start of hostilities.)
“...while passing
through Germany he (Godfrey) was seized and pressed into the army, and his
regiment was employed by the British, to assist in quelling the rebellious
colonies in America, but while the troops were coming to this country, he
succeeded in making his escape.” From the biography for William B Speck,
in The History of Morrow County, Ohio, published in 1880. DSG Jul
24 2000 (Gary’s note...Opinion shared by
others...Could he have jumped ship in Maryland?)
