Descendants of

WILLIAM GUDGER

(MacGREGOR/McGOODYEAR)

Migration pattern:

SCOTLAND -> Georgetown MD -> Unicoi Co., TN, -> Buncombe Co., NC ->

Rest of U.S.A.

The 1st GENERATION

NOTES:

·         Washington County, NC was in the far western reaches of the future state, and today is in the area of Unicoi Co., TN.  At the time the Gudgers lived there it was in NC.  From there they moved to Buncombe Co., NC and from their to other parts of the growing country.

·         Also, Zemeh (Generation 1) is proposed by Sylvia Jackson in her book (Gash Genealogy – A History & Genealogy of the Immigrant Martin Alley GASH & His Descendants © 1998) as a POSSIBLE father for the three Gudgers in Generation #2.  I am placing him as the patriarch of the clan, but even so, am still titling this page as the “Descendants of William Gudger” as there is no concrete proof of Zemeh’s status as their father.  Also William’s two (assumed) brothers, Benjamin and James appear in the records as contemporaries, but there are no descendents listed in any of my sources.  Therefore Zemeh is placed in his assumed 1st generation role, and William’s two brothers in their assumed places in his lineage.  If any of you can dispute this or prove this I would LOVE to hear from you.

·         NAMES highlighted in RED are my direct ancestors.

·         The (12-3456) listing after names in my direct lineage list the generation number 1st (12) followed by the individual number 2nd (3456), both of which come from my Ahnentafael.

NOTES:

1.        Family tradition says William and his brothers fled Scotland in 1770.  William changed his name from MacGregor to McGoodyear.  Due to the heavy accent, the Goodyear sounded like Gudger, and that is how it came to be.  SEE Story of the family name (Link inoperative at this time).

2.       William is said to have been 1 of 3 brothers...William, Benjamin, & James.  (SEE Generation 1 above, and people #3 and 4 below)

1800-1810 Buncombe Co., NC “near William”  (also in 1800 census)
