Family Pages for the Descendants of

WILLIAM GUDGER

INTRODUCTION

WELCOME to my GUDGER family webpages.  These web pages have been posted to aid all GUDGER descendants in their search for their ancestors.  I am a sixth-generation descendant of Stacey Elizabeth GUDGER, daughter of William the immigrant.  Therefore I do not carry on the family name as so many others do.  But with the cooperation of members of Rootsweb’s GUDGER-L discussion list and a couple dedicated individuals who were willing to share their information with me, these pages have been made possible.

Over time, I would like to build these pages up into a major database of GUDGER information.  If you have information you would like to share on these pages, please feel free to contact me.  Most of the information posted here will deal with the direct descendancy line of William GUDGER.  It is said he had two brothers, so any information on them or their parents will also be warmly welcomed.  The GUDGER families were also known slave-owners, so I would also like to post information on the families and descendants of any of their slaves.  Any folks I cannot tie into a particular family will also be listed.  The only GUDGERs that will not be listed are folks that are still living.  That is to protect their privacy.

The GUDGER family is not my primary focus for personal research, as I live on the west coast, and the early folks lived in NC/VA.  Therefore, I have NOT been able to verify any primary sources of information listed by other researchers.  Listed below is a brief outline of how I fit into this family.  The various linked pages tie in the various generations. I do plan to add an outline descendancy of the family to supplement the existing alphabetic index in case you want to search for a specific person and don’t know where they fall on the generational pages.

This will be a continual “work-in-progress,” so your input will be highly desired and valued.  Please feel free to contribute.  For those of you that have sent me information, I will soon be incorporating that into this major update.  I do want to post this now, and will continue adding as I move into the early months of this new year.

The GUDGER family can be considered an “AMERICAN FAMILY.”  The earliest GUDGERs came to America in the early days shortly after the Revolution.  They settled in the Virginia/North Carolina frontier, and planted deep roots in the region.  During the Civil War, many of the GUDGER boys and men joined forces with various militia units and fought for the Confederate Army.  Most survived the war, but a couple gave their lives.  As was so typical with families in that pre-Civil War ear, some of the GUDGERs also owned slaves, a topic many people would like to forget.  That fact is still a fact, and is presented on these pages without judgment.

After the Civil War ended, a number of the GUDGER clan became involved in government and law, with several lawyers, judges and state and federal-level politicians coming from this sturdy stock.

NOTES:

·         No living people will knowingly be listed on these web pages.

·         Any addresses/names or E-mail addresses appear with permission of the individual listed.

·         Dates that have a “c” indicate “CIRCA” meaning about or around.  This means the dates came from a census or other source that listed the age, but no specific birth date/year.

·         This genealogy is only as accurate as the information provided by research and various sources, and as interpreted by myself.  If you see any errors or omissions, and have documentation to back up your information, I would LOVE to hear from you.  You can contact me via E-mail.

·         My GUDGER line is as follows:  Gary SPECK -> “Dad” SPECK (still living) -> Elizabeth PARSONS ->

Martha Amanda GASH -> William T GASH -> Stacey Elizabeth LONGMIRE -> Stacey Elizabeth GUDGER -> William (The Immigrant) GUDGER -> Zemeh GUDGER???

I hope you enjoy your visit to my GUDGER family roots.
