NOTES:

Flora’s brother, Pastor Gustav Groenow performed her and Fred’s marriage at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Mallard, IA.
Anna KAHLEY is said to have been born in either Davenport, IA, or in Rock Island Co., IL, across the river.
The Brattmiller family farm was located about two miles west of Ayrshire, Palo Alto Co., IA, and is still in the family. It’s one of Iowa’s “Century Farms” – farms that remained in the same family for 100+ yrs.
After Anna died, her mother lived in the house to look after the children until Fred remarried in 1904. Fred’s sister Alma and Joe Place (before they married) also lived on the farm and helped out. Joe appears to have been a hired hand, and he and Alma eventually got married and moved on to Minnesota.
When Fred and Flora moved to California in 1915, sons Ben and Carl remained in Palo Alto Co. Fred John later returned, while Walter and Rose, Willie and Anna remained in CA. Two of Fred John’s sons moved to CA, one remaining here today, the other has retired and moved back to Iowa.
