NOTES:

  • See the “family legend” story of the early days.
  • It appears that Fred W. (son) immigrated to America first, changing the last name from Brattmϋller (Brattmueller) to Brattmiller here.  Differing sources show various spellings, including Bratmiller and Brat Miller.  The 1900 Census shows F.C. and a son arrived in 1884 (Charles?).  Don’t know for 100% certain when the rest of the family immigrated to US, but 1884 seems likely.  It is assumed since Fred W came to America shortly before his 17th birthday, he came to avoid the draft.
  • On Fred W’s emigration packet, his Germany church record sheet does not indicate Brattmϋller grandparent names, but his mother’s parents ARE named. That would be consistent with the family legend that has Fred C. (Chris) the only son of a single mother.
  • According to the 1895 Iowa State Census for Silver Lake Township, neither Fred C (Chris F) nor Charles were listed as U.S. citizens.  They were listed as “Un-naturalized foreigners.” However the 1900 the Federal census listed FC as a “Naturalized” citizen.
