..John Burwell came from Hemel Hempsted, county Hertz, England.

(E.R. Lambert (Lambert MS at Yale) went there in 1838 on Burwell business).

John was first at Roxbury, Mass, then Wethersfield, Conn., and then to Milford, Ct., as a free planter in 1640. He had lot # 44 consisting of 2 acres and 20 rods.

..He may have been married three times. He married #1 (1), Sarah, and had one known child, Samuel, who died at childbirth in 1920, as possibly did Sarah.

..He wed #2 (?), Hester or Esther Winchester, at Minsden Chapel, county Herts, England in 1622. They had two known children: Mary and Esther.

.. He married #3 (?) Minsden Chapel, 24 June 1635, Alice Heath who died 19 Dec 1666 in Milford. She married /2 as first wife 12 Sept 1650 to Joseph Peck.

Zachariah: b: abt 1639; m: 18 Nov 1663 Elizabeth Baldwin, Moved to Newark, NJ in 1666.

Samuel: bpt 11 Oct 1640; wed 1st: Sarah, had nine children.

wed 2nd:Sarah (Newton) Stone, had 2 children.

Ephraim: bpt 19 May 1644. Spouse unknown. 3 children, known

Nathan: bpt 2 Aug 1646. Wed Temperance Baldwin. 6 children.

Elizabeth: bpt 24 or 29 Dec 1647. Unmarried.

In 1640, John Burwell, John Atwood, Thomas Baker, Jasper Gunn, Edward Riggs, and Thomas Tibbals, who had served in the PEQUOT War, moved westward to WEPOWAUG, and laid out the town of Milford (CT).

grandson of John, married Rebecca Bunnell on Dec 27 1684. The ceremony was performed by the Governor. He died Dec 30, 1719 (Burwell Family Picnic,

held 18 Aug 1870 in Cleveland).

In-Law John Browne's property. Was mentioned in Will of John Browne in

Dec 1689. Was appraiser for John Baldwin property in Jan 1688. In Oct 1692,

Essex Council voted that Zachariah and Ephraim bring wood to Mr Prudden.

Ephraim (Sr) made appraisal of Samuel Potter property in Dec 1996.

14.July 1712 - Zachariah gave land to Daughters, of property that was "North of

Ephraim's property".

15.Reference made to Widow Burwell (wife of Ephraim) in Court Records.

16.Samuel, son of Ephraim, moved to Woodbury, Middlesex Co, NJ.

Note: Ephraim (b:1644) would have been 21 1/2 or 22 years of age when he went

to Newark, NJ in 1666, and probably married, with the (possibility of) one or two

children by then. He was given Equal property as other married couples, and was well respected in the community, as evidenced by Selection to Several

committees in new town (Newark)
