Thomas (T.J.) Denney gave an interview to James Denney that was published in the Cullman Tribune

on Thursday, June 30, 1983. He stated that he had joined the 31st Alabama Infantry at Talladega in 1862. The records describe him as 5' 8" in height, blue-eyed and auburn hair. He stated that his brother John was in the siege of Vicksburg and brother Irby was at Richmond. He being younger, at 15, came into the C.S.A. army later.

At Big Shanty (Kennesaw Mt.), Georgia with all resources depleted to fight with the southerns were captured and for the last year of the war both John and Thomas were imprisoned at Rock Island, Ill. Irby was killed at Richmond and buried there, far from home and loved ones.

There had been a break-up of his father's family when he was seven or eight years of age. They had moved from Henry County, Georgia where he was born into Alabama where he lived with his mother and two sisters. In the spring of 1862 he left his sorrowful mother and sisters and marched away with a group of southern young men.

Jas ?) 13th Reg't Alabama Vols . . . who died at Yorktown, VA on or about the 2 day of Dec 1861 and that she is entitled to claim all wages commutation clothing money and all other moneys due the said soldier dec'd from the Confederate States and that no one else is entitled to claim the same. Sworn to and subscribed before me this the 3 day of Jan 1862 (or 1863)." She signed with an X. The amount was $102.96.

There is record of an Irby and Nancy Denny in the 1860 Federal census of Randolph County, Alabama, Northern Division, Rockdale Post Office, page 619, dwelling #1554. Both are born in Georgia, he is 30 years of age and she is 25. They have two daughters and one son. The children were born in Alabama. Nancy is residing in T10, R1E, Summit Beat, Blount County, Alabama when the 1880 Federal census was taken. Her son John W. is in the household with her. Her age is listed as 48 and his is 19. The census indicates that she was born in Georgia and John W. in Alabama.

Henry Yates was the next to youngest son of James and Elisabeth Yates. He may have been given the middle name of his brother John H., who probably died in the Civil War, just before Henry was born. He had a small, wiry frame, dark complexion, and in latter years, a handlebar mustache. After his wife, Sarah, died, he lived with his daughter, Ida, and her husband Bunyan McDonald on their farm in the Pine Grove community. He would go to bed putting his Panama hat on the bedpost and get up the next morning and clap it on his head again, according to his grandson Fox Yates. Around 1910 he moved to Morgan County, where his brother William Manning lived and tried farming there but returned to Randolph Co. He farmed to the last years of his life and lived to the ripe old age of 95. He never spoke of his parents.

Henry's birthdate is listed as 12/1848 in Alabama. His parents were born in Georgia. Frank's birthdate is listed as 3/1859, b. in Alabama. They have been married 26 years. She has given birth to 10 chidren and 8 are living. The children in their household are: John L., b. 10/1878; Robert H., b. 2/1881; Elsey, b. 6/1886 (Elsie married Samuel Turner); Clem M., b. 4/1891; Frank E., b. 3/1894; Rufus S., b. 4/1897; and Eutheria, b.1/1900.

The question of Henry and Frank's birthyear is questionable. There is a male child living in the household of Irby and Nancy Denny in the Northern Division of Randolph County, Alabama in 1860. (See reel #22, page 619, dwelling 1554.) The tape that I viewed was not a good one but the information I managed to gleen from it is thus: A female, M.M., age 8. A male whose name was illegible is age 4 and another female, Matilda, age 3. We know that Henry had 2 sisters, Martha and Matilda. We know from the Civil War records that Irby's wife's name was Nancy.

Nancy Denny is living in Blount County, Alabama in 1880 in T10, R1E, Summit Beat, reel #3, page 365, dwelling #50. Her son John W. is living with her. He is 19 years of age. Living next door is Martha and Clem Sterling in dwelling #49. According to John W.'s tombstone, he was b. 1/20/1861 and died 7/30/1939. He is buried at Gibbs Chapel in Blount County, Alabama.

Papa, as he was known to the grandchildren, was a "salt of the earth" type. He was quiet, shrewd and hard-working. His farm had chickens, horses, cows, corn, hay, strawberries, tomatoes, apples, okra, eggplant, snap beans, onions, sweet potatoes, and turnips. The barn contained woodworking tools, a foot-pedaled whetstone and a pickup truck. He and Mama Yates were one of the first families in Pine Grove to own a motorcar. It was a Model T Ford. He had complained about the heat and someone told him he needed a car to stir up a wind. Another time in a later car, according to his son Fox Yates, he was driving Lawden to school for the first time in Lineville, with Era, his wife, in the passenger's seat. Era talked nonstop, sometimes. George got so rattled listening to her directions that he forgot whether the window was up or down and spat his tobacco juice right into the window pane. George taught the grandchildren how to dig a miniature well with a bucket and crank and guided this grandson (Donald Neal Yates) on a toy tractor at the age of two or three, training him to become a farmer like himself. He died of colon cancer and is buried in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Clay Co., Ala. George and Era had incompatible Rh blood factors and five of their children did not live beyond a week. George was named after an Uncle George Washington Yates who went to Texas.

Mama, as she was known, came from the large McDonald family. She was the eldest child. She always had half moon-shaped fried pies filled with apple butter from her own trees for the children. She was a practiced storyteller and knew some good ghost tales about Pine Grove and Flat Rock. She was a very demonstrative, intense, and emotional person. She would hug relatives on sight, cry easily and grin when happy. She liked to go on walks. She prided herself on her bachelor buttons, linens and cooking.

Lawden grew up in Pine Grove, Alabama, near Lineville. He was considered good looking, with jet black, almost blue hair, cleft chin, high cheekbones and "matinee idol" looks. He attended Berry College, where he met his wife Bessie and where his brother Fox also met his wife Sarah, and served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II (Pacific Theater). He first tried selling insurance in Gadsden, Alabama. He then moved his family to Cedartown, Georgia, where his parents bought a farm. He operated a grocery store next door to it called Yates Cash Market. It had a live fish trap for keeping bait minnows. All the children worked in the store from an early age. Lawden took the family on vacations to Destin, Florida, and eventually moved to the area in 1954. He invested in properties and ran Yates Grocery Store on Eglin Parkway in Fort Walton Beach. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He and Bessie divorced in 1963. He sold the store and moved back to Lineville, Alabama, where he set up another store and sold real estate. His second wife's name was Imogene Strickland; it was a second marriage for both. They had three girls. Lawden died from lung cancer in 1978, age 61.
