Person Notes: According to various censes reports, Richard was born in 1805 in SC. The 1880 census of Towns Co, GA says that both his parents were born in VA. At this time, no conclusive evidence has been found to identify his parents. However, due to his proximity to the family of George Edmondson, he is the likely candidate.Richard Edmundson (sic) witnessed Henry Watkin's deed for land on Soulderbone Crk, Pend./Pickens Co, SC on 6 June 1827. Shoulderbone runs into the Chatooga, which becomes the Tugaloo, where it bends around the western tip of Oconee Co, SC, just east of Rabun Co, GA. Towns Co, GA was formed 6 Mar. 1856 from Rabun & Union Cos. Richard Holden, "now living in the Cherokee Nation," formerly of Habersham Co, GA, sold 500 a. to Henry Watkins of Pend.
Dist. SC for $300. The land, known as Lot #3, was on Shoulderbone Crk, waters of Chatooga R., occupied now by Henry Watkins, "all other sides vacant," granted to Richard Holden. Wit: Heskitt Watkins, Richard (X) Edmundson. Heskitt Watkins pro'd deed on 11 Oct. 1827. Rec: Anderson Co SC DBk S:158.

A Richard EDM was a buyer at Jos. Underwood's estate sale in Pickens Co, SC, on 7 Feb 1834. Exr: John Quarles, Jr. Bond of $3,000 to J.H. Dendy, Ordy. by Ths. Fitzgerald, Wm. Gable, & David Quarles. Citation pub'd at Long Crk Mtg House, 3 Nov. 1833. Underwood owned 4 slaves. Buyers: Wash. Smith, Henry Gassaway, Isiah Starkey, Isaac Barron, Robt. Quarles, James Coal, Coonrod Weaver, Jos. Williams, Chs. McClure, Jos. Jones, Wm. Crow, James Herron, Josua Darnell, James Reid, Hiram Roach, James George, Eli Wiggins, Jacob Butt, Stokes Pynian, Robt. Quarles, Henry Watkins, Grief Williams, Thompson M. Hanson, Hubbard Quarles, Henry Watkins, Grief Williams, Thompson M. Hanson, Hubbard Quarles, Zachariah Kelly, Richard EDM. A Jos. Underwood is mentioned in SC DBk A:20, as having owned 500 a on the waters of Cane Crk, part of which was originally granted John C. Kilpatrick & the other part to Jesse Nevill. Long Crk flows into the Tugaloo & runs through present Oconee Co, SC. This county is at the tip of SC and is adj to NC & GA.

Ritchard Edmonson (sic) was on p. 237 of the 1840 census of Cherokee Co, NC: 2 m's (-5); 1 m (10/15); 1 m (30/40); 2 f's (5/10); 1 f (10/15); 1 f (30/40)? Our Richard wasn't shown on the 1840 Union Co Census. Whites Among the Cherokees lists Richard Edmondson living in Union Co, GA on 29 Mar. 1834, with 2 males and 4 females in his household. John Quincy and Amanda would have been ages 6 and 4, at that time, so apparently, there was another daughter b. before 1830. They were living one household from Elijah Barron with 3 males and 3 females in his household. A Richard Holden (2 & 4), James Holden (4 & 2), and James Smith (3 & 4) were also enumerated. EFAB 87:48 cites GA Magazine as stating that Richard EDM was a buyer in Pickens Co, SC at the est sale of John Quarles on 17 Feb 1834.Richard Edmonson (owns 1 slave) 45 b. SC was #916 on the 1850 Union Co, GA census with Margaret 45 b. SC & all ch b. GA: Esabella 18, Hamilton 13, Napoleon 11, George 9, Richard 7, Lavona 6, & Margaret 3. Richard Edmnsan (sic) was a farmer, with property worth $1,000. His son, John Quincy, 21 b. GA & wife, Mary Ann 22 b. NC, with Laura 7 mos b. GA were in hh #634 & dau, Amanda (Manday) was in #639 w husband, Asal Day. Jesse Berrong (sic) 45 b. SC was in hh #1050 with his family. According the 1850 Union Co Slave Schedule, Richard owned a 15 yr. old black female.Towns Co. was formed from Union and in the 1860 Census, Richard Edmons, farmer, (sic), age 55 b. SC with real estate valued at $1,500 and personal property at $2,000 was enumerated on p. 128 on 4 July. The nearest post office was in Hiawasse. His wife, Margarett, was 55 and and was b. in NC. Neither Richard or Margaret could read or write. Hampton (Hamilton) was 22, a wagoner, and listed as being b. in NC, as were Napoleon 19, George 17, and Richard 15. Lavina (Savina?) 14 and Margarett 12 were b. in GA. On p. 224 (M593-154) was Richard Edmondson, age 64 in Batesville, Habersham Co, GA on 29 June 1870 census. On this census, it says that both he & Margaret, age 64, keeping house, were both b. SC & were illiterate. In their hh were 2 black domestic servants, Jane Thomas 14 b. GA & Elizabeth Thomas 11 b. GA. To be able to afford the two servants, have died between the years of 1870-1880. He was listed as Richard Edmonson b. 1806 in SC, on the 1880 census of Towns in Towns Co, GA. He was 74 and his occupation was listed as laborer; race white. It states that both parents were b. in VA. He had a wife, Mary, age 68 (b. 1812 TN), engaged in housekeeping.
