Here it shows that Hiriam Ross was the brother of Martin Ross and the son of George Ross.

SOURCE: I would like to thank Sarah Touchet for providing me Indian papers.  She and I share the same ancestor, Hesket 'Hart' Watkins, but never in my wildest dream that we also share the same Ross ancestry!  Please visit her website.  Thank you.

Notes
  George Ross

The Watkins Ferry to the Chapel section of the road began at Watkins Ferry (today's Williamsport, MD) on the Potomac on or near present-day Highway 11.  A survey first mentioned land in connection w/the road when it recorded a "Waggon Road" crossing George Ross' 403 acre 16 April 1752 Fair Fax survey land. This "Philadelphia Waggon Rhode" was located approx. 1 ½ mil SW at Marlowe, WEVA.  The road next crossed the NW and SW corners of David Watkins' 272 acre 15 April 1752 Fairfax survey land on both sides of the Interstate Highway 81/US Highway 11 interchange south of Marlowe.  At the interchange, the road crossed John White's SE corner of his 573-acre 18 Feb. 1749-50 Fairfax warrant land.  On 8 June 1744, John White was granted a license to keep an ordinary at his house for one year by the Frederick CO Court.

  Martin Ross

"Soon after" 1831, Martin Ross arrived from North Carolina.  He settled, for the first year or so of his stay, just west of the Cartecay river opposite the Will McHan place.  It was the same land as that occupied by Ozias Holden at one time.

Mr. Ross was a Democrat and a blacksmith, though without church affiliations.

He bought (he may have rented from Mr. Holden at first), later, a place of his own, where his widow continued to live long after his day.  Esteemed generally, he was said to have been helpfully disposed toward neighbors, often supplying creature needs among them.  Among the people about him he left a memory deeply cherished.

In 1881 his widow still occupied the old homestead with an only daughter, who was still unmarried.  Mrs. Ross was reputed to have fully matched the spirit of her husband in kindness and liberality toward neighbors.  After the death of her husband, she had joined a Baptist church."

Jenny Teague (daughter of Artimincy Ross and Decatur Teague)

"Decatur Teague married and had one child named Jenny.  She married Will Walker.  Her daughter, Naoma (Naomi?), married Mr. Jones.  There are some of her daughters living in the Cartecay and Yukon areas."

Decatur Teague (husband of Artimincy Ross)(see PHOTO below)

"Decatur (Teague) was killed in the Battle at Resaca and is buried at Marietta in the National cemetery."

"Decatur and Robert (brother) both fought in the Civil War.  Decatur, for the south and Robert for the north.  Decatur was killed in action near Resaca, Georgia and is buried in the Civil War Cemetery in Marietta, GA.  Robert came home from the war okay, but was an outcast from the family because he had fought for the north.  He never married or had children."

  Hulda Cloninger (see PHOTO below)

I wrote this article for my daughter in 1996.   (Not exactly 1/4 but maybe 1/16 Indian blood.)  Unbelievable!

"Judging from Hulda's dark eyes and coal-black hair, we speculated that her mother Arty was of Indian ancestry.  Growing up, we kept hearing that we had 1/4 Indian blood flowing in our veins!"

SOURCE:
The Heritage of Gilmer County, Gilmer County, Georgia 1832-1996, pg. 135-136

NOTE:
Hulda's mother (Arty) died before 1880 after the birth of her youngest child,
Wade Hampton Cloninger, in 1873 when she was 30+ years old (see below).

1880 (Gilmer) GA
District 107 pg. 591
Ross, Arthamentha NC, age 70, widowed, (father VA, mother NC)
Ross, Margaret A. NC age 41, (father NC, mother NC) (unmarried daughter)
Cloneger,Wade H. b. GA, father NC, mother GA (grandchild)

This is the FINAL PROOF to drive my point home!

Log(a)n...(a) & (u) almost similar--Teag(u)e

  I see family similiarites:

  • Arty named their first son, George Martin, after her husband George and her father Martin.
  • Arty's daughter, Hulda, named her first-born son, Martin (died young), after her father, Martin Ross.
  • Hulda named her second child Ardesia Angeline using her mother's initials: Artimincy Adaline.
  • Hulda also named her third child, Artie Elizabeth (died young & buried at Mt.Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery, Ellijay, GA), after her mother, Arty.
  • Mother & daughter (Arty & Hulda) had the same middle name: Adaline.
  • The name, Artimincy, is repeated in 3 generations: Martin's wife (Artimincy Melton); Martin's daughter (Artimincy Ross) and Martin's granddaughter (Artimincy Cloninger).
So the Ross ancestry is rightfully MINE!
