The Honda |
|
| |
The first time I saw a
Honda Civic was when my cousin bought one around 1980. I loved the way
she changed gears while driving around and decided that I wanted to learn to
"drive a stick." We bought our new Honda Civic in April 1982.
Some of our friends thought we were crazy because I'm 5' 11" and my husband
Jerry is 6' 11". I would just point out the high cost of gas and
my long work commute. I lived in the Northeast part of Huntsville
(AL) and worked on the south end of Redstone Arsenal near the Tennessee River.
The day we bought the Honda, we drove to Jerry's hometown of Ardmore (AL) so
that I could learn to drive a stick. It was an all day effort.
By evening, I had decided that buying the Honda was a mistake - Big
Time! How in the world was I going to get to work? Monday
morning came and I decided to leave early. Until you drive a stick, you
never realize how many traffic lights are set up on road inclines.
Somehow I got to work and back home. Every day got easier and easier.
Our kids were 7 and 4 years old when we bought the Honda but we figured we
would have a bigger car by the time they got too big to sit in the back seat.
In a few years, we needed a bigger house but interest rates were at an
all time high. The only way we could manage payments was to keep the
Honda for a few more years. I knew one day I would have my dream car.
At one time, Jerry's parents had a duplex in Gulf Shores on the beach.
They had a family reunion there one Memorial Day weekend and we decided to
make the trip in what else but the Honda! By then, Jason was 12 years
old and almost as tall as I. Jerry's not-so-petite sister was going to
make the trip with us. We all piled into the car. The hatchback
space was not big enough for all our suitcases (I'm one of those people who
believe it's better to have more than enough than not enough) so we had to
hold a lot of stuff in our laps. I sat in the back with my
sister-in-law. Rachel who was 9 then was small enough to sit
between us. Jason sat in front holding one of the bigger
suitcases. We had to stop every couple of hours just to switch
positions. Understandably on the trip back home, my sister-in-law
decided to ride home with another family member who had a Cadillac. Just
because I had a small car did not excuse me from carpooling. I once
drove five 15-year-old boys to the movie theater. They asked me to
pull around the side so that people couldn't see them when they crawled out of
the car. Jerry had started a business on the side doing carpentry
work and had to buy a used work van. That meant I had to keep driving
the Honda. While driving around, I would often gaze out at some of
the bigger luxury cars. How I wish it were possible that my little Honda
could grow up and be one of those. By the time Jason was 16, he
was 6' 4" and wore a size 13 shoe. There just wasn't enough space in the
back for his feet so on family outings, he sat in front and I sat in the back
with Rachel. Jason had his driver's license then and learned to drive on
the Honda. Once he and a friend were at church and left early to meet
some girls at another church. In the parking lot, they discovered a car
had parked behind them pinning them in. They looked around and saw that
there was just enough space beside the Honda to drive out if it were turned
sideways. Probably since they were young teens with a lot of adrenal
fueled by raging hormones, they were able to lift the Honda bit by bit until
they eventually got it turned enough to drive out.
The Honda outlasted Jerry's work van so he
took over the Honda and I finally was able to buy another car. Not
my dream car but just a nice enough car to get me where I need to go.
The Honda was nearly 19 years old and had a lot of rust spots
and the upholstery desperately needed replacing. Some vandals had
broken into the Honda one night about 7 years ago taking the radio and
cracking the windshield in the process. We hadn't bothered to replace
either one figuring the Honda wouldn't last much longer. I would
pester Jerry telling him we need to start looking around for a newer car
for him to drive. He would always say: "The Honda is doing just fine,
thank you." One Friday evening not long ago, I was reading
the Huntsville Times and saw an article about "Won't Give Up an Old Vehicle?"
The Honda immediately came to mind. I was excited when Jerry got
home and told him: "I have some good news to tell you." He said:
"I have some bad news, which one of us should go first?" I
said: "Let's hear the bad news first." He said: "I think the Honda
is about gone!" My heart fell to my stomach. Oh no! Not
the faithful Old Honda. The Honda has been there for us through thick
and thin. I told him about the Huntsville Times article and said:
"It's not such good news now, is it?" We called a nearby auto
shop to see if they would look at the Honda. They told us to bring
it on in and and they would look at it. I drove behind Jerry to the
auto shop. He seemed to be having trouble keeping the motor running.
It was as if the Honda was having trouble breathing. The Honda stopped
a couple of times but Jerry got it running again. I had tears
in my eyes watching from behind as they struggled to drive down the road.
Just as he pulled in to the auto shop parking lot, the Honda quit.
No more coaxing could get it started back up. I went into the shop
and told one of the workers the car had stopped outside. He and some
more workers went out and pushed the car into the building. They
said they would check it over and call us on Monday. Jerry and I
walked back to my car. I had to reach for a tissue. I looked
at Jerry and he said: "I hope they can do something for the Honda.
We've had it so long it's like family." Monday afternoon, we
went back to the auto shop. The news wasn't good. The
mechanic came out to talk with us in the waiting room. The main motor
part was worn out and would have to be replaced. It could be done
but it would be costly and there was no guarantee something else wouldn't
break down. We decided to let the Honda go. Another one of
the mechanics said he would like to buy the Honda to use for parts.
It was a nice feeling to think that parts of the Honda would be kept going
in another car. I wanted to see the Honda one last time. Jerry
and I stood looking at it. He said: "It just doesn't feel right to
let it go. It feels like we should take it out in the country and
bury it somewhere." I understood how he felt. I took one last
look at the Honda and thought: "Good bye, dear friend, you've done good." |

When I was about seven or eight years old,
my friend told me that if I could jump off our garage using an umbrella,
I would float down as if I had a parachute. Well, I believed him!
I borrowed an umbrella, climbed on the roof of the garage, opened the umbrella
and...jumped!
Well, I sure didn't float. It was more
like a THUD. It knocked the breath out of me and knocked some sense
into me! Not only my pride was hurt, I had to replace the umbrella
that was turned inside out. Many years later, my friend had to tell
my new husband of my total flop at the class reunion. Boy, was I
embarrassed?!?!

"Aunt Stell" was my very favorite person.
Her full name was Finnie Estelle Grizzard. She was the third child
of Emmett & Sabra Grizzard. She married James L. McDuffie Cunningham.
He was called Uncle Duff. Anyway, I remember I would slip away from
Mother every day running to Aunt Stell before I got caught. To reach
Aunt Stell's house, I had to go through the pasture. Of course, Mother
had a reason to be concerned. There was a mean old bull in the pasture!
Aunt Stell knew the danger so she would always come to meet me every time.
Some of my fondest memories are from the
Cunningham family. They made me feel so special. When Reba
& Dugan (Aunt Stell's children) took me to church, I always got to
sit at the piano while they played. Once Reba & Dugan bought
a small kitchen set for my birthday. Mother said that I wouldn't
touch it because it was really special. I just walked around it saying
"Ooowee just looky, ooowee just looky." ( I guess I was afraid it
would go away if I did touch it.) Also, I remember how Olen
(Aunt Stell's son) would get so mad at me because I would go into the candy
case at the store. I would eat the outside of the stick candy and
then, put the half eaten stick back in the case. (I'm sure he forgave me
long time ago!) These were good times!
