MURVIN GRISSOM IS KILLED
Athlete is Fatally Hurt in Glenn Co. Motorcycle Mishap
Murvin Grissom, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. U. B. Grissom of Los Robles, died today from injuries suffered late Saturday as the result of a collision near Willows between the motorcycle he was driving and a car. According to witnesses the accident occurred when a car driven by Mrs. Marion Benaman of Willows passed in front of the motorcycle. The impact threw Bernard Taylor who was riding behind Murvin, clear without injury. Taylor said Murvin was thrown against the side of the car. He was taken to a Willows hospital for treatment of a dislocated shoulder and concussion. Members of the family said he regained consciousness Sunday and seemed on the road to recovery. Arrangements had been completed to remove him to a Red Bluff hospital today when his condition became critical. Death came about 1 p.m. Murvin was born November 18, 1919. He was well known in Tehama county as an outstanding athlete and student at the Red Bluff high school from where he graduated in 1938. Last year he attended Santa Rosa Junior college where he starred in baseball. During the season just completed he was a pitcher on the Bobcat baseball club. Many experts had pronounced Murvin as an excellent pitcher and predicted that he might well follow the footsteps of his brother, Lee, who hurls for the Cincinnati Red. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Lee, who left the East today by plane; Bennie, Marvin, and Marion Grissom; Mrs. Sam Goodwin, Mrs. Ed Davis, Mrs. Vernon Eckles and Miss Lucy Grissom.

COMMUNITY LOSS
Editorial The death of Murvin Grissom yesterday was a deep shock to the community. In the minds of friends, and particularly to sport fans throughout the county, Murvin represented an outstanding young man with a bright, promising future. Clean cut and conscientious Murvin was a symbol of youth worthy of respect in any generation. His untimely death cut short what promised to be a brilliant career in a game he loved---baseball. When he attended the Red Bluff high school he ate, drank and slept baseball. Unlike so many athletes with talent, Murvin didn’t rely solely on the natural gifts. He trained and studied hard to be a better ball player. After graduating from high school in 1938, Murvin attended Santa Rosa Junior college. In his first year he made the varsity baseball squad and was one of its regular pitchers. Murvin wanted to play on his own merits. He never attempted to share the spotlight that was turned on his brother, Lee, who pitches for the Cincinnati Reds. While his presence will be keenly missed, Murvin will continue to serve in memory as an ideal for every boy to follow. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. U. B. Grissom, and his brothers and sisters have the sympathy of the entire community for their loss of an All American Boy.

(Transcriber’s note: Saturday, the 2nd of September the California State Fair in Sacramento was designated as Vallejo day. Murvin and Bernard were on their way to the fair in Sacramento when the accident occurred. Monday, the 4th of September was Labor Day. ) 68
