Bikini Atoll, Marshalls Dear Mom and Dad: Well, it sure feels good to be through with the first Atomic test and know that we are getting somewhere at last. This evening everything is quiet in Bikini, with the Saratoga still burning just off our port quarter, and a capsized (APA) just in front of us. We are closer to the atoll it's-self than most of the fleet because of our position as a hospital to this gang, and the need to be close to the small band of men whose job is to clear obstructions and so forth around the harbor, and who are about to go ashore any day now and take samples of the ground and take a summary of the results on the land. It is three weeks until the next one so we haven't much time to prepare things for it, but as usual the navy will have things ready. I sent you one of the many situation summaries on how things were progressing, and also a copy of the commendation we received from the secretary of the navy. Let me know when you get them and please keep them safe until I get there. I have another copy but may lose it sometime. Were getting some beautiful music from Paris France tonight. Ha! they must be getting that city fixed up in a hurry to have a big ball like that, cause that's where the music is coming from. Classical stuff naturally. I still haven't heard from Sis. She must be sick or something. Let me know if you heard the broadcast of the operations here the 1st or not. If you didn't, I'll let you know when I find out. Did you ever get that radio battery? I'll send you some money as soon as I get paid. When I get to San Francisco your going to get a whole truck load of nylons or my name isn't Grimes, and it may not be after awhile when they drop this next bomb. Ha! It is to be dropped a few feet on top of the water and the results they think will be a tidal wave but the funny thing is they don't know just how big it will be, so let us hope it isn't too big, but if the same thing happens this time that did before and good common sense will tell Ha! One paper termed us as the suicide crew of the pacific and I believe he is right. Looks like my electronics school has fallen through just like I half expected it would all along. They tried to find some tests to give me that I had to pass in order to go at all, but as yet they cant find any in this entire task force but you cant tell anything can happen in this navy. Ha! Well I must close and get back to work so write soon and let me know the turn of events back home. Bye.. Loads of love Your Son Charles.
