I arrived in Manila Friday morning and am leaving for "Samar" {sic}, an island in the Philippines this afternoon where my L.S.T. is now. The weather here is insufferably hot, and the city of Manila is also pretty rotten. They are pretty short of radiomen here also and want me to sign on for duty with Radio Manila (N.R.O.) but I refused. I just can't see it I'd rather have sea duty any day. I had to have all my money changed into Phillipino currency and am sending you some. It's quite a novelty. This is 3 Peso's, about $1.50 in American money. It takes two peso's to equal one American dollar. Also here is a wad of Chinese money, the whole lot worth about 20 cents. Ha! I remember one time going into a Chinese laundry to pa a bill. I gave him a 20 dollar bill. He took his fee out (about 2 dols.) and made an excuse about not having any change, but small change. I said it was alright, so he slapped a wad of money in my hands big enough to choke a cow! Ha! Well, I'll close and finish repacking my gear. Be good and write lots. Your devoted son Charles H.
