I'm fine aside from being bored half to death with the everyday routine here aboard ship. There's not much happening here in Tsingtao. Now that I've been transferred back aboard the Benevolence, I find that there is a lot of work that's been piling up to be done, and so if I get lonesome I've got a lot of that I can always wade into. ha! Were of course having a rough time with only the chief and I to keep the entire radio shack going. When I first came aboard as I said in a previous letter all of our equipment was fouled up, but I've just about got it squared away and now it's going to be kept that was as long as I'm aboard this ship. We are copying a press schedule and are printing a paper for the ship, and of course that is a lot of work also. It has tuned awful cold here and is almost blizzard weather as 12 below this morning and with snow all over the ground. These Chinese people are freezing to death and remind me of a bunch of savages. It's dangerous more than ever now to go ashore now {sic.} with continuous rioting and fighting everywhere. All these people want is something to wear to keep from freezing to death and they think they can get it by violence. What they should thing about is that our code is violence and if they want a brawl they're picking on the right party. The shore patrol has been doubled here and things are starting to quiet down somewhat, but I guess it will keep on until the U.S. get these people something to live on I don't know. Well I guess I had better close it's almost time for my press to start. So long for now and take care of yourself. Your devoted son Charles - H.
