Mary was underaged at the time of her marriage to George. Not only that, she was an orphan. Neighbors/friends M.F. Lutes and G.R. and Margaret White testified that she was telling the truth about her status on the license. We also know she died when her daughter Lula May was still quite young. I tend to think she died in the early part of 1900, for the simple reason that George married Mary Ellen TATE HAMMER in May 1900; he had 4 children under the age of 10 living at home. Uncle Sherman and Uncle Elmer were both born in Cassville, Barry Co. MO. Then again...although there is some dispute with the year of Lula May's birth--Grandma insists she was born 9 months to the day after George and Mary M. married, even though Nathan gave her dob of birth as being 3 months earlier, in 1890--if the dob for Sherman is correct, Lula May could not have been born in 1891. I got Sherman's dob from a couple of sources, including SSDI and the CADI at Rootsweb. Sometimes, folks forget about the necessity of having at least nine months between births. It could be that Mary M. died in childbirth with Everette--Lula May, Sherman and Everette being born in quick succession--and George married another woman whose became Bertha's mother. Grandma insists as well she had an Aunt Myrtle Overstreet and an Aunt Stella Overstreet; I've found women of those given names who married Overstreet men, but none of them would have been Grandma's aunt, directly. Since Lula May bears so little resemblence to her father, George, we could probably say that she looks much like her mother--but that is rarely a safe assumption to make. It is true that my grandmother looks like her, and my dad and I bear strong resemblence, as well; so it appears the Roberts' genes are usually dominant. I just wish I could find her. The problem, narrowed down-- 1) George is noted as being from Stone Co. MO, specifically Carr Lane, on the license. Mary is listed from Carr Lane, as well. This being shortly after the 1890 Federal Census was taken--which we know doesn't exist for MO anymore--we don't know who Mary lived with in 1890 before her 1891 marriage. If she did give birth to Lula May out of wedlock, she may have been disowned and had been living with the Whites who are witnesses to the marriage. This in itself could show that George wasn't Lula May's biological father, I suppose. The license states, "By her statement the said Mary M. Roberts has no parents or guardians attested by M. F. Lutes, Marget [sic] White and G. R. White." She wasn't likely to have been previously married, since she was then under the age of 18. 2) Mary died before the 1900 census, in which George is living in Carroll Co. AR. There are no records of her burial/grave in Carroll Co. History of Stone County, Missouri, Volume One states that Bertha was born in Carroll Co., although Sherman and Everette were both born in Barry Co. MO. (Bertha is listed in the book because of her marriage to Mack CAREY--she was his 2nd wife. Sherman was listed because of a brief marriage in the 1930s to Mack's daughter Rose from his 1st marriage.) |
