A transcription and photos of the stones in this cemetery are available hereInitially I was not familiar with the Lebanon cemetery but after some 'digging' I found that it was one of the oldest cemeteries in the area. Robert Weis Sr. relates a bit of its history here as well as his index of residents. Being only a couple of miles from my house I drove over to check it out. I was really disturbed by what I found. Stones had been toppled, the back 3/4 (older) section was completely overgrown with briars and weeds. The ONLY reason I could even see stones back there was because of the lack of vegetation this time of year. As I walked, ok hiked, to the farthest corner I was struck by what good shape many of the stones are still in. I wondered how long this would be the case with the obvious vandalism that had gone on up front. I decided then and there that if no one had photographed these stones I had to do it while it was still possible. Looks like my next stop is the local Walmart to buy a machete. Keep checking back as I will document my progress and setbacks here. Sadly, there is not much left of the building. (update Nov 2003 - The old building is no longer standing) Many of the taller stones have been toppled but are still intact for the most part. A machete will be necessary here in the older section. |
