JOSEPH ZINCK was born to unknown parents in 1820 somewhere in France [aka Alsace, Bas-Rhin, France or Alsace-Lorraine, France] [aka Reichsland (Elsaß-Lothringen), Germany when under German control] [aka Bavaria or Prussia in vital records]. Here he married Thresa (aka Theresa) [perhaps BECHEL or BECKEL]. Here their first daughter, Melania, was born. Here on the 14th of March in 1848, this ZINCK family left their fatherland and embarked on their journey to America. More than likely, they traveled with other family members or very close friends, as was common when relocating to another country. They left the port at Le Havre, France on the ship "Ancona" for New Orleans. It appears that they had plans to immediately reconnect with family members already present in America. Upon their arrival in New Orleans it appears the family made their way for Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio where one Celestine Zinck (of unknown relationship) was located and where perhaps others they knew were located. However, at this time, the exact relationship of Joseph to Celestine is unknown. Based upon preponderance of evidence they were likely brothers or perhaps cousins.

Ancona, ship (American) |
Upon their (Joseph, Thresa, & daughter, Melania) arrival in Montgomery County, Ohio they settled in the city of Dayton, and their family grew to include at least three more daughters (Louisa, Regina, & Josephine), and even perhaps another (Caroline).
By 1855 at age 35 or 40 depending upon the reference, Joseph was deceased leaving his wife, Thresa, a widow and daughters fatherless. He was originally buried at the now defunct St. Henry's Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, as were apparent other family members. The remains of Joseph Zinck (Interment #04180 at 1SE; death or burial given as 1855? at age 40 according to Calvary Cemetery Records...gravestone places age as 35 at death) and the remains of Caroline (aka Carolina) Zinck (Interment #04177 at 1SE; death or burial given as 1855? with no age given) were both reinterred at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio in the same plot in Section 1, Lot 357. Also is found among the records the reburial of the remains of Theresia Zinck (Interment #04181 at 2SE; death or burial given as 1855? at age 70) At this time the relationship of the 70 year old Theresia Zinck to Joseph Zinck is unknown.
[Of interest to Audrey (Lehmann-Shields) Hancock is the fact that the remains of her ancestral grandparents, Michel/Michael Lehman(n) and his wife, Marie Madeleine/Mary Magdelena/Malinda/Helena Biam, were also reinterred from St. Henry's Cemetery to Calvary Cemetery and lie in the same plot under Joseph, Theresia and Caroline Zinck. "Michael" & "Helena" "Lehman" (per burial information) were the parents of Regina Rachel Lehman(n) who married Celestine Zinck.]

4. Josephine "Jo" Zinck, b May 1852 Ohio, married Jacob I. Schneider (b. May 1840 in Ohio) [per C. J. Egetter & Gay Ellen (Egetter) Hanlon]
5. perhaps Carolina / Caroline Zinck who was buried with Joseph Zinck when their remains were transferred from St. Henry Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio to Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. (She could also be the Regina listed above in the 1870 census, who was not found in the 1880 census.) ASH
At the time of the 1860 U. S. Federal Census, Thresa had given her name as Theresa Bechel/Beckel and her daughters were listed as Zinck. Had she remarried briefly to a Mr. Bechel/Beckel or did she in haste not understand that in widowhood women in America kept their married names, and thus perhaps gave her maiden name which could have been Bechel/Beckel? By the time of the 1870 Census she was "Therresa Zinck" and residing next door to her daughter and son-in-law [Martin Egetter and Melania (Zinck) Egetter] and family.

Thresa (aka Theresia & Theresa), Joseph's wife, died at 68 years on 26 March 1884 (Calvary Cemetery Record, Internment 01923 at 1SE) [born 1815-died 1883 according to gravestone inscription*]. She was buried 30 March 1884 (Calvary Cemetery Record) directly next to Joseph, her husband, and those lying under him as given above at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Interestingly, their gravestones are not located in the same section as the Celestine Zinck family (per C. J. Egetter).
* [Note: Sometimes gravestones were not placed until some years later, and the family informant ordering the stone incorrectly gave erroneous dates. At other times, it is known that gravestone engravers made errors and in that case families sometimes kept what was written having received compensation for the error. ASH]
The EGETTERs & ZINCKs (Joseph) are known to have been related by marriage. A close relationship is probable between Celestine Zinck family and Joseph Zinck family with Celestine and Joseph as probable brothers, perhaps cousins.
