FAMILY BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION 2007 from C. J. Egetter as written by Martin J. Allhoff concerning his parents:

Martin Allhoff was born 21 August 1827 at Britsenhem on the River Rhine Aug 21st 1827. He came to Coloma, El Dorado County in 1849 with his brother John Allhoff. He engaged in mining and soon had sufficient money to buy a home and about 35 acres of land. He and his brother, John, then returned to Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio in 1852. Martin married in Dayton to Louisa M. Weaver. He, then, with his bride returned to Coloma, California, but this time his brother did not return to California with them.

Martin went into the wine business. Being well acquainted with and well versed in the art of wines and brandies, Martin was very successful in his undertaking. His products quickly gained a reputation in California and Nevada. The means of goods transportation in those days was with teams, as railroads were no existent in those years. While on one of these trips with his goods while at Virginia City, he suddenly became ill. Here he died on the 9th of October in 1857. His remains were brought to Coloma, California and burial occurred in the Allhoff plot.

A MUCH erroneous account of Martin Allhoff and his wife, Louisa, was published in 1967. CJE

The Mountain Democrat
(Placerville, California)

"PORTALS OF THE PAST:

Marty Allhoff was a Coloma pioneer. He was born in Coloma, raised in Coloma and buried in the historic Coloma cemetery, within sight of his good friend, James Wilson Marshall. His life was the life of the town. Martin and Louisa Allhoff came around the horn from Milthouser, France, to Coloma in 1850. Theystarted the Coloma Vineyard and grew a variety of choice grapes brought from the old country.

Martin, or "Marty" as he was known to his friends, was born in Coloma on November 21, 1858, next door to the cabin of James Wilson Marshall. As Marty grew up they became fast friends -- a friendship that lasted until the discoverer's death in 1885."

Mrs. Louisa M. (Weaver) Allhoff-Chalmers-Hardie

How is she a cousin to both Melania (Zinck) Egetter & Kate (Zinck) Saettel?

This newspaper article in 1902 appears to link the Joseph Zinck family via Melania "Nellie" (Zinck) Egetter to the Celestine Zinck family via Kate (Zinck) Saettel, dau/o Celestine Zinck, who traveled from Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio to visit with their said cousin, Louise M./S. (WEAVER) ALLHOFF-CHALMERS-HARDIE. The family connection appears to be along the ZINCK family line with the ALLHOFF family, as both Zinck descendants are said to be cousins of Louise M./S. (WEAVER) ALLHOFF-CHALMERS-HARDIE.

"Mrs. Kate Saettle [sic] and Mrs. Eggetter [sic] and son, of Dayton, Ohio, arrived in Placerville last Saturday evening for a brief visit with M. J. Allhoff. The ladies are cousins of Mr. Allhoff's mother, whom they had just visited at San Jose. The party visited Coloma Sunday as the guests of Mr. Allhoff and on Tuesday left for Sacramento, en route to Ohio."

[Note: Mrs. Kate Saettel was Catharine "Kate" Theodora (Zinck) Saettel, dau/o Celestine Zinck & Regina Rachel Lehmann and wife of George Saettel.
Mrs. Eggetter was Melania "Nellie"(Zinck) Egetter, dau/o Joseph Zinck & Theresa (perhaps Bechel) and wife of Martin Egetter.
Were the two Zinck ladies cousins between themselves and then with Mrs. Allhoff? If so, what was the three way relationship?
Mrs. Egetter's son was probably s/o Martin Egetter and Melania Zinck in the person of Charles Henry Egetter, gf/o C. J. Egetter, contributor to this biography. Charles would have been 24 years of age at the time, and perhaps Charles was influenced by the visit, for a few years later, Charles moved to California.
Mrs. Allhoff was Louisa (Weaver/Wever) Allhoff-Chalmers-Hardie, and M. J. Allhoff was her son. [Mr. Allhoff’s mother was a colorful character who played a major (and well recorded) role in the aftermath of the gold rush in El Dorado County, and the rise of the vineyard, wine, and hotel business in Coloma and vicinity. CJE]
However, the exact family connections are unknown.
1. Were Celestine Zinck & Joseph Zinck brothers?
2. How are Allhoffs and said cousins of Mrs. Allhoff related? ASH, CJE]

Joseph Zinck and wife, Theresa are buried at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio, but their gravestones are not located in the same section as the Celestine Zinck family. Also, there is a huge section in the cemetery with many monuments devoted to the Allhoff family who are probably related.

JOHN ALLHOFF (1819-1895) & wife, Catherine E. GLASER (1836-1922) are probably related to the Weaver-Allhoff family [perhaps John was the bro/o Martin ALLHOFF. [Brothers, Martin and John, are said to have originally gone to California together; both returned to Ohio; and John remained in Ohio when Martin married Louisa and returned to California.]. On the side of the gravestone is Sara E. Allhoff (1879-1914). Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. There is a huge section of Calvary Cemetery with many monuments devoted to the Allhoff family.

10 March 2008, E-mail to ASH: Steve Sammons of Illinois names her as Catherine E. GLASER and names him as John J. ALTHOFF.
