SAMPSON

The original 1857 map was a wall map on a roller like what used to hang in schools. The book is a reprint of the old wall map in a much more useable form. In 1857 the printing left a lot to be desired, so reading the names of land owners is difficult. One is whether something is an "A" or an "N". A section is 600 acres, a half section is 320 acres, a quarter section is 160 acres and half of a quarter section is 80 acres; then progressing downward. However, the acreage seems to vary somewhat from this.

3 Martin Tillman [1860 Census, #1161]

4 John Landis [1860 Census #1178]

5 John Townsend [1860 Census, #1188]

6 "J. Brown" could have been one of the following children of Phillip Brown (~1760-~1848 Neave Twp., Darke Co., OH) & Catherine Slyger: Julius Brown or Jacob Brown.

7 Possibly land still owned by Catherine (Slyger) Brown, widow of Phillip Brown.

8 Caleb Brown, s/o Phillip Brown (~1760-~1848 Neave Twp., Darke Co., OH) & Catherine Slyger. Caleb Brown was the father of Mary Jane Brown, who married Patrick S.4 Shields, s/o Isaac3 Shields (Patrick2, Daniel1) and Elizabeth Rust. [1860 Census, #1168]

9"J. Brown" could have been one of the following children of Phillip Brown (~1760-~1848 Neave Twp., Darke Co., OH) & Catherine Slyger: Julius Brown or Jacob Brown.

10 Probably Henry Brown, s/o Phillip Brown (~1760-~1848 Neave Twp., Darke Co., OH) & Catherine Slyger.

11 This surname is spelled MARQUITH, MARQUETH, MARKWITH. This is probably James Jones Markwith who married as his 2nd wife, Barbara Brown, dau/o Phillip Brown (~1760-~1848 Neave Twp., Darke Co., OH) & Catherine Slyger.

By the 1860 U. S. Federal Census, apparently some of the landowners shown above on the 1857 map, have died and land was passed to the heirs and/or sold. Some land owners have moved elsewhere; some have moved into Van Buren Township, Darke County, Ohio. Some perhaps merely owned the land and never resided on it, then by 1860 sold the land they owned.
