Disclaimer:
Information presented on this website is based upon facts and information available at this time from sources as cited. Much is still lacking validation in many areas. Some conclusions are made based upon preponderance of evidence. Perhaps in time other information will be discovered to prove some statements as incorrect. Sources used may include primary records, secondary records, and others' research: birth records, death records, burial records, marriage records, court records, census records, obituaries, Bible records, research and information from others. Know that even the primary records have errors as many times the informer was another who gave incorrect data...very evident in death records, obituaries and census records. Spelling by clerks/recorders and penmanship left much to be desired. Many of our ancestors were illiterate or spoke with their foreign accent or brogue making an even more difficult task for the clerks/recorders. Many records were lost in courthouse fires and floods. As you can see when reading the history of Patrick Shields, there are many unknowns about his life and numerous suppositions, stories, or legends made by different family recorders. If anyone has any information concerning Patrick and his wives and families, I would be grateful for your input. If you have documents that can be scanned and added to this history, those would enhance the authenticity of this story. Additions and corrections would be gratefully received. I am grateful to the family members who have graciously shared information, and they are credited as a contributor. I would like to have this story as complete and accurate as can be for my ancestor. RECOLLECTIONS of FAMILY MEMBERS
2008
Anita (Bowers) Short recalls seeing a picture of "Old Pat" in his later years. He had white hair at that time (beautiful true white hair) and a lot of it for his age. He had the most beautiful sparkling eyes. It sounds funny to call a man "pretty." However, he was about the prettiest old gentleman that I ever saw. "I also remember that for his age, his skin was wonderful and not all 'wrinkly' like many old people."

PATRICK2 SHIELDS, s/o Daniel1 Shields & Mary [--?--], is said to have been born 15 September 1784 (Pension Records: 66 years in 1850; 71 years in 1855; 86 years in 1871) in Ireland. Some have said he was born aboard ship while enroute to America. In this case, he would have been recognized as being born in Ireland according to maritime law. (A person born aboard ship has citizenship of the country of registration of the ship and of the parents.) However, we find that two dates are given for the family's immigration to America...1784 (Pension Records) & 1790. Which is correct? Ship records seem non-existent for this time period, so proving when the family immigrated and proving Patrick's nativity (Ireland or aboard ship) may be unlikely. It would appear that Patrick's siblings were born in Ireland.

1875 Darke Co., OH Atlas
"Patrick Shields, born in Ireland, September 15, 1784; died in Darke County, Ohio, March 1876. Age 92 years, 6 months.

There is now living at Delisle, a man who has had a rather eventful life.

Patrick Shields was born in the North of Ireland, September 15, 1784 and is consequently in his 92nd year. He came to Americain 1791. After living in Pennsylvania for three years, he removed to Cincinnati, Ohio where he landed October 15, 1794.

He lived for a time with General Harrison and attended school at his expense. He went asa substitute in the army of Hull and was present at the disgraceful surrender of that General. He was afterward an express rider for General Harrison, and in 1814 rode from Ft. Meigs to Cincinnati, Ohio in two days. He passed through Cleveland in 1814 when there were but three log cabins there.

He had been married twice and has twenty-two children. Twelve of them are still living. His first marriage license was issued June 16, 1806 during a total eclipse of the sun so that a candle had to be lighted. He has been in twenty-three states and territories, and in his time was considered the best auctioneer and one of the keenest lawyers in the western country.

He is now supported by a pension and although his frame is bent with the weight of years, his mind is still vigourous and his memory sill unimpared--Patrick Shields, the First."

Patrick is said to have married 16 June 1806 to his first wife, Mary Fogle. They perhaps married in Hamilton County, Ohio (where his father owned land and apparently resided for a time). Various family member resided in Butler County, Ohio and Warren County, Ohio during that time period. Many records of both counties were destroyed in fires, if records even existed at that time.

Patrick served in the War of 1812 (Pension Records) and according to the ROLL OF CAPT. SAMUEL ASHTON'S COMPANY (Butler County, Ohio), he served for 6 months from February 21 until August 21, 1814 as Private under these commanding officers: Capt. Samuel Ashton, Sergt. William Cornell, Sergt. Bromfield Boone, and Corp. Owen Davis.

Report of the commander states, "This company was dismissed at Fort Jennings on the 21st of August, 1814, and had to come home a hundred and forty miles after the expiration of their time."

You can see inquires, service records, Patrick's declaration for pension, other government records, and Selina's (his 2nd wife) petition for pension based upon Patrick's service at this hyperlinked website.

At the time of the 1820 U. S. Federal Census, Patrick Shields and his family were living in Milford Township, Butler County, Ohio. His brother, James Shields, was living in Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio. It appears that their father, Daniel, was living as "D. Shields" in Warren County, Ohio in 1820.

Sometime after 1820, it appears that Patrick and his family along with his brother, James & family and father Daniel's family, relocated to Preble County, Ohio. His sister, Mary (Shields) Sinkey appears to have remained in Warren County, Ohio or Butler County, Ohio.

The nativity and parentage of Mary (Fogle) Shields is unknown. Some have suggested that she also was born in Ireland, but this is not documented. Her last signature of real estate transfers were in Preble County, Ohio on 12 Jun 1833. Mary is said to have died September, 1833/1834 in Eaton, Preble County, Ohio. (Pension Appl.: Selina Shields, widow: 31 Oct 1878, Oath of Wm. Nealeigh & Abraham Shields give Mary's death date) Mary's burial place is unknown. Patrick and Mary had ten known children.

Following Mary's demise, Patrick married Selina (Freeman) Boyd, widow of Thomas Boyd. She was born 28 August 1813 or 1 September 1814 in Kentucky to unknown parents. The marriage of Thomas Boyd to his second wife, Selina, took place in April of 1835 in Montgomery County, Ohio. Thomas and Selina lived in Preble County, Ohio after their marriage. This marriage lasted until February 1836 according to Boyd researchers, when Thomas died, leaving her with five Boyd step-children from Thomas' first marriage. Patrick SHIELDS was the autioneer for the sale that took place after Thomas died.

According to the marriage record above, "Patrick Shields" was married 19 April 1836 in Preble County, Ohio to "Salina Boyd" (Mrs. Selina (Freeman) Boyd) by Samuel Robertson J. P. Boyd researchers indicate that it does not appear that her Boyd step-children remained with the family for long after their marriage. It appears that they were placed out among other families, and thus, even their names were changed. Some court records state the children's whereabouts were unknown. With her marriage to Patrick, Selina became step-mother again to Mary's ten children. Patrick was 30 years her senior and thus some of his children were older or of the same age as Selina. And...then by her, Patrick begot nine other children.

Patrick died 15 Mar 1877 at Delisle, Van Buren Township, Darke County, Ohio at the age of 92 years 6 months. He was laid to rest at the Martin Cemetery in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio, which is just east of St. Rte. #571, southeast of Greenville, Ohio. A yucca plant now (2000) grows over Patrick's burial site and hides his gravestone, which is in very poor shape. However, in 2008 photos by Anita (Bowers) Short the yucca plant is at the background of the stone. However, both Marilyn and Anita found the stone to be in very poor condition.] His second wife, Selina, died 23 March 1880 probably in Preble County, Ohio at the age of 67 years, and she was buried to his left.
