Soon thereafter, James and brother, Patrick, must have joined their father and the rest of the family in Preble County, Ohio. Christiana died 31 December 1823 probably in Preble County, Ohio, possibly in childbirth or soon after the birth in 1823 of her youngest son, George Oliver Shields.
James and Christiana were parents of these known children: John, Mary L., Rachel M., Jane, Christiana Magdelena, Eliza Ann, James, and George Oliver. There may have been other children between James and George as there appears to be a 10 year gap between the two boys, unless the others fit into this time period. The widower, James, then married on 10 Jun 1824 Preble County, Ohio to his second wife, Elizabeh Hensel, widow of Jacob Shull. Elizabeth was born 16 March 1790 in Virginia and died 1 July 1860. It is not known whether Elizabeth came to the marriage with children of her first marriage. James and Elizabeth had three children: Albert, Elizabeth, & Martha. James Christian Shields died 21 February 1851 in Monroe Township, Preble County, Ohio, and he was buried at Dry Fork Baptist Cemetary there. His will was probated 15 March 1851.
