Disclaimer:
Information presented on this website is based upon facts and information available at this time from sources as cited. Much is still lacking validation in many areas. Some conclusions are made based upon preponderance of evidence. Perhaps in time other information will be discovered to prove some statements as incorrect. Sources used may include primary records, secondary records, and others' research: birth records, death records, burial records, marriage records, court records, census records, obituaries, Bible records, research and information from others. Know that even the primary records have errors as many times the informer was another who gave incorrect data...very evident in death records, obituaries and census records. Spelling by clerks/recorders and penmanship left much to be desired. Many of our ancestors were illiterate or spoke with their foreign accent or brogue making an even more difficult task for the clerks/recorders. Many records were lost in courthouse fires and floods. MARY2 SHIELDS1, daughter of
Daniel SHIELDS & his wife, Mary [--?-], was born 1775-1780 in Ireland. She immigrated with her parents and brothers to America in 1791. The SHIELDS family moved to Hamilton County, Ohio in 1794 and then Butler County, Ohio by 1807, where in one of the counties Mary probably married ca 1798 to (1)
John SINKEY2. John was born 1773 in Pennsylvania.
On 1 May 1811, John Sinkey purchased 144 acres of land in Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio from Elias Bondinet.
3
John Sinkey died April 10, 1814 at the age 41 in Butler County, Ohio. He was buried at the Amanda Cemetery,
4 Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio where two of his children and their spouses are also found.
In 1820, Mary as "Mary Sinky" was enumerated as the head of household in Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio. She was enumerated in the 26-45 age category. Residing with her were 4 males and 3 other females.
5
After John Sinkey's death, Mary married 20 August 1820 in Butler County, Ohio to (2)
George FREEMAN.
6 George was born between 1780-1785.
The John Sinkey heirs (Siblings of Daniel: Jane, James, Isabelle, Charlotte, and John) deeded 100 acres of land on 7 July 1827 to their brother Daniel Sinkey.
7
The George Freeman and Mary (Shields) Sinkey-Freeman family were residing in Lemon Township of Butler County, Ohio at the time of the 1830 Census.
8 George and Mary were enumerated on Line 24; widowed daughter, Charlotte (Sinkey) Dial, appears on Line 25 with her young son and daughter. Mary's son, Daniel Sinkey, and Daniel's wife were enumerated on Line 22 having married that year. Ralph Voris and wife, Jane (Sinkey) Voris, were enumerated in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio with 7 or 8 children.
Then in the 1840 U. S. Federal Census we find George and Mary (Shields) Freeman enumerated (Line 16) as living by themselves in Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio.
9 Residing next door (Line 15) to the aging couple was her son, Daniel Sinkey and his family. Also, living in the area were other children: Ezra and Elizabeth (Sinkey) Cassiday; John Sinkey; Robert & Isabella (Sinkey) Coddington; and William Voorhees (perhaps s/o Ralph & Jane (Sinkey) Voris/Voorhees who appear to be deceased in 1840.
Both George and Mary apparently died sometime after 1840 and prior to the 1850 Butler County, Ohio census. Their death dates and place of death are unknown, as well as the places where each lies buried.
