Disclaimer:
Information presented on this website is based upon facts and information available at this time from sources as cited. Much is still lacking validation in many areas. Some conclusions are made based upon preponderance of evidence. Perhaps in time other information will be discovered to prove some statements as incorrect. Sources used may include primary records, secondary records, and others' research: birth records, death records, burial records, marriage records, court records, census records, obituaries, Bible records, research and information from others. Know that even the primary records have errors as many times the informer was another who gave incorrect data...very evident in death records, obituaries and census records. Spelling by clerks/recorders and penmanship left much to be desired. Many of our ancestors were illiterate or spoke with their foreign accent or brogue making an even more difficult task for the clerks/recorders. Many records were lost in courthouse fires and floods. JOSEPH M.3 SHIELDS1, son of Patrick2 SHIELDS (Daniel1) and his 2nd wife, Selina FREEMAN, was born 15 January 18442 in Preble County, Ohio. In September of 18503 he was enumerated as 7 years old as residing with his parent in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio and by November 1850 Census4 the family had moved to Van Buren Township of Darke County, Ohio where he was enumerated again as 8 years of age.

Joseph was a farmer.6 By 1900, Joseph and Henrietta had moved to Vermilion County, Illinos. His wife, divorced daughter and granddaughter were residing with them. His daughter and granddaughter were enumerated with the SHIELDS surname.7

Sometime between 1900 and 1910, Henrietta died in Vermilion County, Illinois. In 1910, Joseph at 65 years was residing with his son, Elmer, and Elmer's wife, Katharine, Elmer's four children (Glen, Clifford, Clarence, & Jannette) and Joseph's granddaughter, Fern, dau/o Lucinda. Also, residing with the family were five other lodgers.8

2 ca 1965, Bible Record of Benjamin Franklin Shields: Information as given by Hazel Marker: Joseph M. born 15 January 1844. The September 1850 Census in Montgomery County, Ohio indicated that Joseph was 7 years of age; the November 1850 Census in Darke County, Ohio indicated Joseph was 8 years of age, so it appears he had a birthday sometime between those dates. The 1900 U. S. Federal Census indicates he was born October 1844.
