Disclaimer:Information presented on this website is based upon facts and information available at this time from sources as cited. Much is still lacking validation in many areas. Some conclusions are made based upon preponderance of evidence. Perhaps in time other information will be discovered to prove some statements as incorrect. Sources used may include primary records, secondary records, and others' research: birth records, death records, burial records, marriage records, court records, census records, obituaries, Bible records, research and information from others. Know that even the primary records have errors as many times the informer was another who gave incorrect data...very evident in death records, obituaries and census records. Spelling by clerks/recorders and penmanship left much to be desired. Many of our ancestors were illiterate or spoke with their foreign accent or brogue making an even more difficult task for the clerks/recorders. Many records were lost in courthouse fires and floods. Soon thereafter, James and brother, Patrick, must have joined their father and the rest of the family in Preble County, Ohio. Christiana died 31 December 1823 probably in Preble County, Ohio, possibly in childbirth or soon after the birth in 1823 of her youngest son, George Oliver Shields.
James and Christiana were parents of these known children: John, Mary L., Rachel M., Jane, Christiana Magdelena, Eliza Ann, James, and George Oliver. There may have been other children between James and George as there appears to be a 10 year gap between the two boys, unless the others fit into this time period. The widower, James, then married on 10 Jun 1824 Preble County, Ohio to his second wife, Elizabeh Hensel, widow of Jacob Shull. Elizabeth was born 16 March 1790 in Virginia and died 1 July 1860. It is not known whether Elizabeth came to the marriage with children of her first marriage. James and Elizabeth had three children: Albert, Elizabeth, & Martha. James Christian Shields died 21 February 1851 in Monroe Township, Preble County, Ohio, and he was buried at Dry Fork Baptist Cemetary there. His will was probated 15 March 1851.
