Disclaimer:
Information presented on this website is based upon facts and information available at this time from sources as cited. Much is still lacking validation in many areas. Some conclusions are made based upon preponderance of evidence. Perhaps in time other information will be discovered to prove some statements as incorrect. Sources used may include primary records, secondary records, and others' research: birth records, death records, burial records, marriage records, court records, census records, obituaries, Bible records, research and information from others. Know that even the primary records have errors as many times the informer was another who gave incorrect data...very evident in death records, obituaries and census records. Spelling by clerks/recorders and penmanship left much to be desired. Many of our ancestors were illiterate or spoke with their foreign accent or brogue making an even more difficult task for the clerks/recorders. Many records were lost in courthouse fires and floods. "ISAAC M. SHIELDS, Farmer; P. O. Arcanum; was born in this county and township in 1846 (sic); his parents were Isaac and Elizabeth Shields, natives of Preble County, further record of whom is made in sketch of Amanda Weaver. Mr. Shields has always followed farming having bought and sold several farms, upon which he lived for longer or shorter times, until in the spring 1874, he bought the farm where he now lives, and moved on it in the spring of 1875, since which he has built a large brick house, a very fine barn and made other improvements, and has now one of the finest residences in the township. When Mr. Shields started in life, he had not capital of any amount, he is now owner of 280 acres of land, 220 is now under good cultivation; this large property with all improvements he has become owner by his own activity, industry and shrewd management, and is still a young man of 33 years of age, just in the prime of life; and should his health be spared, he has every prospect of becoming one of the wealthiest men of the township. He is the father of seven (sic) children six being now living. They are, viz: Amanda Elizabeth, Isaac Mathias, Susanna, Minnie Rosella, Elva Marriah, William Roy. He was one of those who, at the call of his country during the rebellion, allowed his patriotism to carry him forward to its defense; he enlisted early in the War of 1862, in the 110th Regiment, In Co. B. O. V. I., and served through the war, returning safely to his loved ones at home. In this sketch we are pleased to put upon the pages of the History of Darke County one of its citizens, a young man whose record shall stand bright and shining light of industry, success and true patriotism to his children and children's children and all generations, as a worthy example to follow; and if they do follow it, it will lead to the sure road to success and prosperity.

A Fine Monument. The Miami Granite and Marble Works of Piqua, Ohio this week contracted with I.M. Shields of north of Arcanum for a fine $4000. Monument to be erected in Abbottsville Cemetery in memory of his wife, who died several months ago. The monument will be surpassed by one monument in Darke County, that of Henry St. Clair in Greenville Cemetery. It will be by far the most impressive structure in Abbottsville Cemetery. The weight will be over 50 tons and will be 22 feet in height. The top will be surmounted with a beautiful urn with pendums of lillies of the valley.

Erects Monument. The Isaac M. Shields Monument in the Abbottsville Cemetery. Heaviest Monument in the County. The heaviest monument ever erected in Darke County by any individual is that of I.M. Shields which was erected in Abbottsville Cemetery last week. The passerby will hardly fail to notice the imposing granite memorial that stands out far above the others in the west end of the cemetery. At the base the stone is 8 feet square and from this it mounts upward to a height of 26 feet. The weight of the entire stone is 55 tons. The monument is a fine piece of work and a credit to the company that erected it. It is cut out of Light Barre Granite. The approximate cost is $4000. Many claim it is the finest in the county with the exception of the St. Clair monument in the Greenville Cemetery. The work was erected by Miami Granite and Marble Co. and the entire construction was done in their plant opposite Forest Hill Cemetery in Piqua. Incidentally, Mr. J.J. Comolli, President and General Manager is a native of Barre, Vermont where he and his father worked in the granite quarries until several years ago. Picture of I.M. Isaac, a widower, died 15 September 1923 at Van Buren Township in Darke County, Ohio. His wife, Ellen, was deceased as of 1914. Isaac and Ellen were buried at Abbottsville Cemetery in Darke County, Ohio, and a massive, ornate gravestone marks their burial site.

According to his last will and testament, the real and personal estate of I. M. Shields was to be sold and basically divided among his children with perpetual provisions "for the purpose of caring for and maintaining the lots and graves and monuments and urns, belonging to myself and my immediate family..."

Shields Farm Sold for $12,150. Thursday (Nov. 20. 1923). The Isaac M. Shields farm, located one mile north of Arcanum was sold last Thursday afternoon at public sale for $12,150. The farm was bid off by Denver Curtner. The farm consists of 80 acres and is well improved. (Arcanum Times Nov. 27, 1921)

So it was that the homestead was sold and eventually passed into the hands of Chester Baker, who owned it when this photo was taken. It is said by people in the Darke County area that one day Chester Baker pulled a wagon into the barn and the floor gave way. On investigation, a complete still was found hidden in a cavity under the barn floor. It was during Prohibition (1920 to 1933 in the United States) that Isaac M. Shields and members of his family resided in this home and on this farmland.

Since Isaac was the owner of the home & barn at that time period, he or one or more of his sons (Isaac Mathias, William & George) were probably the ones who evidently had the hidden still. Isaac's son, George, was arrested several times by the local authorities for selling "moonshine" or just "shine" as many called it. George never seemed to get the penalty that others received for the same infraction. Ah, there may be more untold tales to tell!

ERECTS MONUMENT

In "The Arcanum Times" of 9 April 1915, published each Friday in Darke County, Ohio, a story about a huge monument in a local cemetery was featured as follows:

"The heavest monument ever erected in Darke County by any individual is that of I. M.

The approximate cost is $4,000. Many claim it is the finest in the county with the exception of the St. Clair monument in the Greenville Cemetery. The work was erected by Miami Granite and Marble Company [of adjacent Miami County] and the entire construction was done in their plant opposite Forest Hill Cemetery in Piqua. Incidentally, Mr. J. J. Comolli, President and General Manager, is a native of Barre, Vermont where he and his father worked in the granite quarries until several years ago.

J. J. Comolli's father, Giovannie [John] Comolli, was born 15 July 1852 in Bisuschio, Italy; he married Aurelia Clementina Arioli on 8 January 1878 in Besano, Varese Province. She and infant Jasper [christened Gaspard] arrived in New York on 8 May 1884 aboard "S. S. America." John had arrived months before. He is the grandfather of Eleanor Jean Comolli Brown, deceased wife of Byron Winfield Brown of Greenville, Ohio. Her father was born in Barre, Washington County, Vermont, and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery with other members of his family. Giovanni and Aurelia are buried in Hope Cemetery, Barre. Elsewhere in the 9 April 1915 issue of "The Arcanum Times," there is a picture of the I. M. Shields monument." 6

Recollections of: Anita (Bowers) Short
August, 2008
The monument was erected by Isaac M. Shields for his wife, Ellen (Weaver) Shields and later for himself. Isaac M. was the son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Rust) Shields. I had always heard growing up, that at least one man was killed trying to place it; however, there was nothing in the newspaper regarding this, so it probably never happened.

At the same time that Isaac M. purchased the monument, he also purchased a large urn. This urn was mammoth (over 5 ft. 6 in.) and was in only two pieces, the base and the top, the reservoir was included in the top instead of being separate. I had to stand on my tip-toes to check and see if the plants in it needed water. Before he died Isaac M. set up a trust fund of several thousand dollars as a perpetual fund to fill the urn every year with flowers. His one son [George Lawrence Shields] was in charge of the fund and when George died, one of George's sons [Ted B. Shields] took over the fund. The interesting thing was that it did not take all that much money to fill the urn every year and the money drew interest over all those years until it was a fairly large amount. When Ted B. Shields, who took care of it became elderly, Ted didn't know what to do about it as none of his children wanted any part of taking care of the urn. Ted and my father [O. Dale Bowers] discussed it over a period of time and decided that if Abbottsville Cemetery (Van Buren Twp.) trustees would agree to fill it every year they would donate the fund to the cemetery to pave the drives--which they did. So the cemetery drives were paved.

Sadly, about fifteen or more years ago when these cemetery urns became fashionable for people to put in their gardens, someone (or several someones) tried to steal it. They apparently did not have a clue as to how heavy it was and that it was in only two parts. They managed to get it knocked over and in the process, broke the base, and finally gave up on stealing it. The base could not be fixed, and the last I heard, the top of the urn was still in the township trustees' storage area. The caretaker was trying to figure out some way to present it, back in its original position. However, this has never been done, as there was no practical way to present it without the base."

2 Research of Audrey (Shields) Hancock and verified by Anita (Bowers) Short: Some researchers indicate his name to have been Isaac Matthew Shields, but that has not been verified. No one has produced a reference or source for this statement. He was known as Isaac M., but the entire middle name has not been determined, although his son was named Isaac Mathias Shields (for both grandfathers, Isaac Shields & Mathias Weaver).
