Disclaimer:Information presented on this website is based upon facts and information available at this time from sources as cited. Much is still lacking validation in many areas. Some conclusions are made based upon preponderance of evidence. Perhaps in time other information will be discovered to prove some statements as incorrect. Sources used may include primary records, secondary records, and others' research: birth records, death records, burial records, marriage records, court records, census records, obituaries, Bible records, research and information from others. Know that even the primary records have errors as many times the informer was another who gave incorrect data...very evident in death records, obituaries and census records. Spelling by clerks/recorders and penmanship left much to be desired. Many of our ancestors were illiterate or spoke with their foreign accent or brogue making an even more difficult task for the clerks/recorders. Many records were lost in courthouse fires and floods. "GEORGE SHIELDS, a practical and enterprising agriculturist of Van Buren Township, owns and cultivates 295 acres of land, consisting of one of the valuable and highly improved farms of the locality. He was born upon this place, June 1, 1838 and on the paternal side is of Irish descent, his grandfather being Patrick Shields who came from Ireland. George Shields did not have the advantages of aneducation, much of his early life being devotedto ardeious (sic) labors of the farm. He assisted his father in clearing the land and continued to aid in its operation until he entered the armyduring the darkdays of the rebellion, at Greenville, in Aug. 1861, he enlisted in Co. G. 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was under command of Capt. Newkirk, Col. Wood, and Col. Gilbert. He dorve a team part of the time, handled trains and hunted forage. At Beverly, West Virginia, he was captured and held a prisoner at Pemberton House, Richmond for 33 days, at the end of which time he was paroled and came home on furlough. He had reenlisted at Strawberrry Plains as a veteran in the 8th Ohio Cavalry, and remained in the service until the close of the war, being honorably discharged June 1865. For 15 years Mr. Shields rented the old home farm and after the death of his father purchased it. He has added to this property from time to time untii he now has 299 acres of land in Van Buren Township and has made great improvements on the place. He is one of the most skillful and thorough farmers of this community and a man of good business ability and sound judgement, and to these characteristics may be attributed his success in life. In his politcal views he is a Republican. On March 4, 1859 Mr. Shields was united in marriage with Miss Mary Taylor daughter of the late Wm. Taylor or Frankin Township and to them were born 3 daughters, namely; Eleanora, wife of John Jobes of Van Buren Twp.; Susan wife of Joshua Poe of Van Buren Twp.; and one who died in infancy." |
