Information presented on this website is based upon facts and information available at this time from sources as cited. Some conclusions are made based upon preponderance of found evidence. Perhaps in time other information will be discovered to prove some statements as incorrect. Sources used may include: birth records, death records, burial records, marriage records, court records, census records, obituaries, Bible records, research and information from others. Know that even the primary records have errors as many times the informer was another who gave incorrect data...very evident in death records, obituaries and census records. Spelling by clerks/recorders and penmanship left much to be desired. Many of our ancestors were illiterate or spoke with their foreign accent or brogue making an even more difficult task for the clerks/recorders. Many records were lost in courthouse fires and floods. Patrick
2 Shields, son of Daniel
1 Shields and wife, Mary [--?--], was born 15 September 1784 in probably Northern Ireland
* (some say on the ship coming to the United States abt. 1790). He married first 16 June 1806
** probably Hamilton County, Ohio or perhaps elsewhere to Mary Fogle and second 5 May 1834 Preble County, Ohio to Selina (Freeman) Boyd, the widow of Thomas Boyd. He was the father of twenty one children (ten with Mary Fogle and eleven with Selina Freeman).
* Note: Patrick's biography indicates he was born in the "north of Ireland" and if the family didn't immigrate until abt. 1790, he would have been about 6 years old.
** Darke County, Ohio Atlas, 1875
“There is now living at Delisle a man who has had a rather eventful life. Pat Shields was born in the north of Ireland, September 15, 1784 and is consequently now in his 92nd year. He came to America in 1791, and after living for three years in Pennsylvania, he removed to Cincinnati, where he landed October 15, 1794. ... His first marriage license was issued June 16, 1806 during a total eclipse of the sun so that the candles had to be lit.” There was definitely an eclipse on the date given.
*** Note: Butler County was established from Hamilton County, Ohio in 1803. It is believed that Patrick & Mary were perhaps residing in Hamilton Co., Ohio when they married 16 June 1806. (Many records of that time period were destroyed due to courthouse fires and flooding.)
1807 Census, Butler County, Ohio; Lemon Twp.; SHIELDS, Daniel

Patrick2 Shields, s/o Daniel Shields & Mary [--?--], after arriving in Ohio lived in Hamilton, Butler, and Preble Counties. There are records in Preble County, Ohio of his crying estate sales from 1828 through 1844. His wage for each sale he cried was one dollar. Eventually after his second marriage he removed to Darke County. In 1850 he was living in two places at the time of the 1850 census. He was first enumerated in Jackson Twp. in Montgomery County, Ohio where he was listed as "carpenter" and in November he is residing in Darke County, Ohio and listed his occupation as “vandue crier” which was the title auctioneers used in that period. His death took place 15 March 1877 at Delisle in Van Buren Township, Darke County, Ohio. He and his second wife are buried in Martin Cemetery, Greenville Township, Darke County, Ohio.
Listed below are the known descendants of Patrick2 Shields who carried on the auction trade. Of these, his son Patrick F.3 Shields was one. The rest descend from Patrick’s2 son Isaac3 who married Elizabeth Rust. Thus, it is possible that there are also unknown descendants who also became auctioneers.
