with special thanks to Vincent FALTER, a Schirrhein researcher, who has shared much with me.
You are cordially invited to share a tidbit, a link, a brief lineage, a brief history, etc. by contacting this homepage owner per e-mail below.

Village bank people may not speak English, so sending an e-mail would probably be the best approach.
It would probably be best to write to the Directruer of the Caisse Mutuell de Schirrhein-Schirrhoffen and ask about the availability, cost, and mailing information for the book.
(Information as posted 21 Oct 2001 on Alsace-Genealogy@listserv.aol.com Discussion List)
According to Vincent Falter, the book was a cooperative effort of a number of people working
with the Caisse Mutuell de Schirrhein-Schirrhoffen which published
it in celebration of its 100th anniversary. Watercolor painting of the
village of Schirrhein was done by Rose-Marie Vetter.

HALTER
HALTER Family History
The first with the surname HALTER in Schirrhein, Alsace, France area "were one of two brothers. Abraham and Jacob HALTER. They left the village of Tafer in the Canton of Fribourg southwest of the Canton of Bern, for land in Alsace that had been stripped of its population during the Thirty Years War. They immigrated to Schirrhein, Alsace between 1650 and 1660. In 1689 Abraham HALTER died in Schirrhein. Among his descendants, was Edouard HALTER of Schirrhein, Alsace's most famous poet, historian, and literary critic. A lesser known but nonetheless interesting descendant was Romain HALTER, the first mayor of Schirrhein, who served through the chaotic period of 1789-1792, during the French Revolution. Descendants of Abraham and Jacob are now scattered throughout the area and are found predominately in towns and villages around Schirrhein, particularly Schirrhoffen, Bischwiller, and Hagenau."

Robert Behra notes which appeared at one time on his
A to Z Alsace Communities (link now defunct)(with permission given to copy on 11/29/1999) the
following information: "For Catholic records of residents
of Schirrhein you need to consult the parish registers of Haguenau.
Those for the churches of St. Nicolas and St. Georges were
apparently filmed together, and microfilm No. 0742514 has all the
baptisms for the period 1730-1767. There are also registers for the
church of Marienthal and the Hôpital civil in Haguenau.... Then
there are the registers of the Chapitre-rural for Haut-Haguenau and
Bas-Haguenau. These would be the last resort, I think, but should be
checked if the others don't yield anything."

RESOURCES FOR FAMILY CONNECTIONS
The Falter-Scharf Family From About 1585
By
Vincent Falter
Anundsen Publishing Company Decorah, Iowa
Vince Falter gives the following information:
"After 15+ years of work and multiple research
(and great vacation) trips to
Luxembourg, various parts of Germany, and to Alsace
and Lorraine, France,
The Falter-Scharf Family From About 1585
has been delivered to me.
The Falter-Scharf family history is printed
in two high-quality, hardback,
8 x 12 inch volumes printed on 60 lb. acid-free paper.
They are organized as follows:
- Vol. 1 Falter and Falter ancestors.
This book contains chapters on the
following primary families,
who were early settlers in Stark County,
Seneca County, and Delphos-Landeck part of Allen County, Ohio area:
- Falter (both the Ohio and Chicago lines from Nack, Germany)
- Ardner (from Mittelbexbach, Germany)
- Bonifas (from Nospelt, Luxembourg)
- Gengler (from Nospelt, Luxembourg)
- Koerner (from Nack, Germany
- Steinmetz (from Schirrhein and Schirrhoffen, Bas Rhin, Alsace)
- Vol. 2 Scharf and Scharf ancestors.
This book contains chapters on the
following primary families,
also well-known in the Delphos-Landeck area:
- Scharf (from Nack, Germany)
- Hummer (from Niederkorn, Luxembourg)
- Kihm (from Walsheim, Rheinheim, and Gersheim, Germany)
- Groff (from Alsace, France)
- Müller/Mueller/Miller (from Rheinheim and Gersheim, Germany)
- Descendants (to mid 2001)
The titles of the above chapters indicate
the names of our ancestral
families that are known to have immigrated
to the United States in the period
1831-1846. Of course, there are literally hundreds
of other families included
in the books. They are our ancestors who preceded
the immigrant families and
they are researched to the point where the
records in Europe no longer exist.
They go back 400+ years to about 1585. They have been
researched and are
written up in great detail in some cases,
depending on the information
available. Other families listed are those of persons
who married into the
families listed in the chapter headings here in the
United States over the
last 150 years.
I knew that this was going to be a big job,
but never realized how BIG until
I finished it. All told, it contains about 1,150 pages
and has a 64-page
index of the 11,000+ persons recorded in the book.
It also contains the
detailed and extensive pedigrees of both the
Falter and Scharf families back
to their earliest known ancestors in the 1500s.
The two volumes contain over 200 photographs,
illustrations, maps, tables,
diagrams, charts, plus many, many family stories.
Most of the source material
came from wills, and probate, parish, vital, land,
military, and census
records in the various countries.
The original Latin, French, and German in
which those records were written have been translated
into English.
These books are more than a recitation of who our
great-grandparents were,
who their parents were, and who the children of
countless generations were.
The books also contain the relevant essential history
of the families in the
context of the histories of Luxembourg, and Hessen
and the Bavarian Pfalz of
today's Germany, as well as Lorraine and Alsace,
France. They also contain
the histories of the many towns and villages in
which our ancestors lived
from the 1500s until the 1930s, plus information
on their occupations and how
they lived.
This information has been translated from the original German and
French.
The books are available for shipment immediately. The cost for the two
volumes is:
$ 102.50 for both books
$ 12.25 shipping, packing, and handling
$ 114.75 total
Most of our family and researchers are primarily
interested in the families
contained in only one of the volumes and want to
add only that volume to
their library. In that case the cost for one volume (your choice, Falter or
Scharf) is only:
$ 51.25 cost of one book
