In the winter of 1882, Augustus was kicked by a horse in Shelby County, Ohio. He was apparently taken to the residence of his brother-in-law, Dr. George W. Fulkerson in Logan County, Ohio where he appears to have died on 11 December 1882. His body was brought home to Shelby County, Ohio, where Augustus was interred in Section 2 of Lot 42 in the Old Houston Cemetery, Houston, Shelby County, Ohio on 13 December 1882. This father left these children: Albert, Nancy Jane, Mary Catherine, James, Edward, Charles, George, Oscar, Margaret, & Dora Elon.

A brief simple statement in the local flyer tells of August being laid to rest.

Houston Cemetery is located on the south and north side of the Houston-Russia Road, about a quarter mile west of St. Rt. 66. The Houston Congregational Christian Church is just west of the newer, north part of the cemetery. Other churches in the adjacent areas through time were the Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church, the Beech Grove United Brethern Society, the Mt. Jefferson Christian Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the St. James German Reformed Church. The earliest known burial was in 1824.

[Note: Since August was the eldest of his siblings, I do not believe John Mills of Sidney was a nephew, but instead his younger half brother, John H. Mills. As far as can be determined, there were no nephews named John. ASH]

Within a couple of months, the grieving widow, Catherine (Maxton) Mills would lie to rest their baby daughter known by the family as "Little Ellie."

Family stories tell us that Catherine (Maxton) Mills and her young family tried to keep the homestead going in the months that followed Augustus' death, but in the end they found that they could not. Catherine eventually sold out and moved to Piqua, Miami County, Ohio.

The last of a family gathering between the MAXTON, MILLS, & LEHMANN families was held in 1911 at the home of Martha Maxton's and her brother, John V. Maxton's. During this family gathering it is said that religious differences caused a rift between the families, and Catherine Mary (Maxton) Mills refused to speak to her daughter, Mary Catherine (Mills) Lehmann again. It wasn't until Catherine Mary (Maxton) Mills was on her deathbed that she asked for her daughter, Mary. The two youngest daughters of the LEHMANN family walked past their Grandmother Mills home on their way to school, and Rita (b 1913) recalled that Gertrude (b 1910) once told her, "I think that's our Grandma," who out sweeping her front walk one day. The LEHMANN family was Catholic and the MILLS-MAXTON family was not.
