HENRIETTA "Heine" CATHERINE LEHMANN, daughter of John Michael Lehmann and Mary Catherine Mills, was born 2 August 1900 Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Piqua, Ohio and records indicate her name as Henrietta Catherine Lehmann, whose father's origin was Berlin, Ohio [later Ft. Loramie, Shelby County, Ohio]. She was the fifth child of eleven.

Her sister, Rita (Lehmann) Shields, 13 years younger than Heine, had these observations and memories. "I don't remember too many incidents during the early part of my life only things that happened in my later teens, as I try to recall some things about Heine. Heine took a business course after graduating from eighth grade. She was a secretary to a lawyer downtown Piqua and later secretary for the V.I.P.s (Very Important Persons) at the Wood Shovel and Tool Company until her marriage in 1922."

John William Quinlisk and Henrietta Catherine Lehmann
Heine married 15 February 1922 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Piqua, Miami County, Ohio to John "Jack" William QUINLISK. Jack was son of Michael Quinlisk & ??? ???. Jack was born 25 February 1897 at ????. After their marriage, the couple resided in Piqua for a time, then relocated to Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. As was expected in that time period, once married the woman was expected to retire from work and become a full time housewife, so it was that Heine then devoted her life to her husband and family.

Looks like it is time to leave.
Rita continued, "Since she and Jean shared the same bedroom, they would get into arguments over keeping their room clean, particularly the closet. Jean would straighten her side of the room and closet only to find both soon with shoes scattered, clothes on the floor, etc. I remember Jean and even Catherine got tired of picking up after Heine. Whenever they found her clothing not hung up they'd toss it in the wash basket, and when she went to put on what she had planned on wearing, it was all wrinkled up. She'd have to press it or wear something else. There were many arguments and disagreements primarily because Heine did not keep their room straightened."

"Heine always dressed very well and nicely, because of her job, but later in life also. She loved pearls and wore them frequently when I was younger. Throughout her life Heine was always a 'lady,' in dress and behavior, but often neglected housework. Housework was just not that important to her, as it was with my other sisters. She just didn't like doing it, but thought that there were more important things to life. She had a very caring, loving and giving disposition and was liked by everyone who knew her."

Aunt Heine was my [Audrey (Shields) Hancock] godmother. I recall visits to her house in Dayton when young which brings some special memories...walking in the garden; discussing kinds of flowers; and going to the drugstore for a soda. I recall sleeping overnight and crying because I missed my mother, but being comforted by a loving aunt. I enjoyed riding the electric trolley to town for shopping with her. I remember seeing her on her knees painting her kitchen floor. I treasure the gifts of love throughout my life...the dolls which she gave me as her godchild, the compact which she gave me for my high school graduation, and the afghan which she crocheted for me in later life. I remember her salt and pepper collection, her cup and saucer collection, and little snippets & tidbits that are all treasures of the heart.

Saying "GOOD-BYE" to Heine and Jack was difficult.
Jack was taken from Heine in March of 1974 and two years later she, too, passed from this life on 23 March 1976 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. In death they both returned to Piqua, where she and her beloved rest side by side at Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua, Miami County, Ohio amongst her parents and siblings...the LEHMANNs (John & Mary, brothers: Martin, Francis, & Gerhard), the WILKINs (Catherine & Bernard), the ZIMMERs (Jennie & Roy), the RITTENHOUSEs (Jean & Bob), the BEIHLs (Gert & Joe), and the SHIELDS (Rita & Dale).
