MARY MAGDALENA LEHMANN, was the daughter of Michel/Michael LEHMANN and Marie Madeleine / Mary Magdelena BIAM from Schirrhein, Bas-Rhin (Alsace), France/Germany. She was their first child born in America on 25 January 1833 in Plain Township, Stark County, Ohio. She was baptized at [Historic] St. John Catholic Church, Canton, Stark County, Ohio.1 Her baptismal godfather was Joseph Lehmann2, whose relationship is unknown and who is believed to have immigrated at the same time as Mary's father, mother, and siblings. Joseph may have been a cousin or other family connections. The godmother was Eva Volker of unknown relationship or connection.

She resided with her parents and siblings for about four years in Stark County, until her father having sworn his allegiance to become an American citizen, gathered his family and packed their belongings and headed to Shelby County, Ohio.

"Mary Magdalen Hochwalt (Lehman) Was the fifth child of Michael and M. Magdalen Lehman who came to America from Alsace there in province of France settling at Canton Stark Co Ohio where Mary Magdalen was born Jan 25 1833 when about 3 years old she came with her parents to Berlin (Now Loramie, Shelby Co Ohio there a howling wilderness establishing a house between Loramie and Mile creeks."

At the time of the 1840 United States Federal Census, Mary Magdelena Lehmann was residing in this howling wilderness with her parents and siblings in McLean Township, Shelby County, Ohio just outside the village of Berlin (later known as Ft. Loramie]. With the rest of the family she probably attended St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church services.

The whereabouts of Mary Magdelena Lehmann are unknown at the time of the 1850 United States Federal Census. It is believed that she and perhaps a sister or two moved to Montgomery County, Ohio where finding a job was easier. Here she must have met Henry Hochwalt for they are said to have married 15 October 1853 at the Emmanuel Catholic Church3 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Here they apparently resided and reared their family.
