Descendants of the
BENJAMIN HANCOCK FAMILY
of Hanover County, Virginia
Chart 3
by Audrey (SHIELDS) HANCOCK of Portage, MI
This Hancock family is traced from Benjamin Hancock and his wife, Mary "Polly" Beadles who resided in Hanover County, Virginia. Based upon preponderance of evidence by other family historians, it is given that Benjamin HANCOCK MAY BE the s/o John HANCOCK of York Co., VA. DNA matches have been proven for three different branches of this family, and thus appear to validate family connections.
This is posted so that we might make contact with others, who like us have spent years in trying to find their HANCOCK family. HELP in validating any of these POSSIBLE relationships would be gratefully appreciated. Additions/Corrections to this rough draft of a family history are VERY WELCOMED.
This information has been gathered from our research and from others sharing their HANCOCK lineages of this family. This work is NOT to be taken as an authority, as much still needs to be proven and validated. The red print definitely indicates an unproven connection between John & Benjamin.

[Is John HANCOCK of York Co., VA, his father, as listed on a CD, which also named Benjamin and Benjamin's son, Joseph, & also named Joseph's sons .] Children of Benjamin & Mary listed & named below appear to fit into a birth pattern that would allow the conjecture that has been made concerning this family. Were there daughters? One would think so.

I William Hancock of Orange
county and state of Virginia, being weak of body but
of sound and disposing mind do make this my last will
and testament revoking all others. First I commit my
soul to an all wise creator praying for pardon
(can’t make out) of a crucified and just savior,
and my body to the mother dust with the expectation of
my soul to a glorious immortality. After paying all
my just bills I make the following bequests and
divisions: To my daughter Nelly Hancock’s children
with whom I am not aquatinted I give one hundred and
twenty dollars to be divided among them having hereto for
given my said daughter a Negro boy which was to be
considered her legacy. To my son Monroe B. Hancock
I give one dollar he having received his legacy some
time ago. My son William B. Hancock received his part
of my estate before his death, but land having fallen
in value, I give to his little son, William B.
Hancock Jr. one hundred dollars and to his daughter
Jane Elisabeth Hancock a good bed worth seventy-five
dollars. My daughter Nancy Woirhaye had heretofore
had a Negro girl as her legacy, I give her one dollar
additional; and to her children that she already has,
or may hereafter have, by her husband, Francis
Woirhaye, I give one hundred dollars to be equally
divided among them. To my granddaughter Frances
Garton, now living with me, I give thirty dollars.
The residue of my estate I leave to be equally
divided among my other four children: Benjamin Hancock, Mary Garton, Sarah Bradley and Susannah Stephenson,
with the understanding that Mary Garton is to have
ten acres of land where she now lives, at three
dollars an acre which is to be deducted from her
equal part, and Susannah Stephenson is to retain the
lot on which she now resides containing one acre for
one hundred dollars which sum is to be deducted from
her equal portion. It is my will and desire that my
daughter Mary Garton shall have (in additional to what
I have already given her) my joys and harmonies. I
give to my grandson William B. Hancock in addition to
what already been given my saddle and bridle to be
taken care of by my executors and given to him at such
time as they may think him capable of taking care of
them. In the last place I conclude my last will and
testament. Written by my hand and seal this
twenty-fifth day of June, one thousand eight hundred
twenty eight.
Signed Wm. Hancock
teste James Shepherd and Joseph Stephens.
It is my further will and desire that Rebecca Beckman
and her children by her first husband John Beckman
shall receive out of my estate fifty dollars
and also to receive an equal portion of my estate
with my other four children before named Benjamin
Hancock, Mary Garton Sarah Bradley and Susannah
Stephenson. It is also my will and desire that my
land shall be equally divided among my five children,
namely Benjamin , Mary, Sarah, Susannah and Rebecca,
That my will and intention shall be more fully
understood, as regards the division of my land,
I wish it surveyed and valued. To each one
(heretofore named that may be entitled to any part
there of) as equally as possible. Having paid to Col.
James Barbour a balance of a debt for my son Benjamin
Hancock which a amount can be seen by reference to the
clients office; it is my will and desire that the same
shall be deducted from his part of my estate. Witness
my hand and seal this day and year as I have written.

OBITUARY
(Clinton Eye - Nov 2, 1889 - Henry County, MO)
George Washington Hancock Sr.
G. W. Hancock, Sr., familiarly known as Uncle Wash, died about 12 o'clock Monday night (Oct 29, 1889), thus closing the scene of a most eventful life. Born in Culpepper Co, Va., May 19, 1807. His father's family moved to Franklin county, Ky. about 1810, where he was reared, a member of one of the most flourishing families of that state. He next moved to Owenton county, Ky., where in 1830 he married Jennette N. Settles, where his three children were raised, only one, John B. Hancock, surviving. He joined the Baptist church in his 16th year, and after his marriage, the children, 10 of whom grew to powerful and sturdy manhood and womanhood, he has for several years been the only surviving member. That once large and happy family of rollicksome boys and girls who tended the flocks, tilled the fields and played about the hearthstone of their father's plantation in Kentucky, vieing in feats of strength and prowess with their fellows, have with him passed away forever. He came to Clinton first in the fall of 1854, moving permanently the summer of 1855, when he brought with him the first stem saw and grist mill ever erected here, for which he received a bonus of $1000, an offer made by local citizens to secure such a venture. This mill was located where the ruins of the old woolen factory now stand; and here with his son, J. B., present proprietor of the Brownington mills, he sawed lumber and ground bread-stuff for people far and near until the outbreaking of the war. As a boy, he heard the battle guns of 1812, was a busy carpenter and builder in Kentucky at the time of the Mexican War and, in the late war, his fearless and out-spoken sympathy for the cause of his native state brought upon his head not a few of the trials and misfortunes of that stormy time. His first vote was cast for Andrew Jackson and all through his life, in the height of prosperity or midst of misfortune, two grand principles guided and controlled his life - the eternal justice of the principles of Democracy and his trust in God, child-like in its simplicity. Soon after coming to Henry county, he bought and entered some 2000 acres of land and at the old home place, a spot which long years ago he had chosen from a hundred hills to be the abiding place of himself and family, he passed to his much needed rest, the same calm look upon his face, the same sweet smile upon his lips that had graced a thousand deeds of kindness and lit his every look of love.

Recorded on tax record in Reily Twp., Butler Co., OH is John Adams Hancock who was either (Capt.) John or his son, John A. Hancock & recorded on land records in Ripley Co., IN/Decatur Co., IN is John Alexander Hancock. (Capt.) John's son was also John A. Hancock. Were there ancestral connections to an ADAMS family and/or an ALEXANDER family perhaps in Virginia? Was (Capt.) John, John Adams Hancock, and his son, John Alexander Hancock?
John HANCOCK b 04 Mar 1753 is said to have been born in Henrico Co., VA according to a D.A.R. report, but this is unsubstantiated at this time. It is the belief of this collector that this is not true. It appears he had roots in Hanover Co., VA, where possibly he was born. No seasoned HANCOCK researcher to date has been able to pinpoint him in Henrico Co., VA, and he does not appear in any HANCOCK family genealogies with roots in Henrico Co., VA.
John is said to have served in the militia of Louisa Co., VA during the Revolutionary War, and this is validated in various histories. His name as (Capt.) John Hancock reflects his possible service ranking. It is said by a D.A.R. record that he received a land grant for his service, which supposedly is at the VA State Archives, but this is not validated. Of course, we might thus believe that he along with his assumed brothers, Joseph & Austin, served their country during this war. Only Austin’s service record has been found at this time as he applied for pension. No record of a land grant for John has been unearthed at this time, but perhaps this is why he left Virginia for Kentucky.
In a D.A.R. record it is said that John & Nancy were married 07 May 1774 in Louisa Co., VA, but a marriage record has not been found in Louisa Co., VA to validate this. Nancy was dau/o Thomas GRAVES & Isabella Susannah BARTLETT who are believed to have lived in Spotsylvania Co., VA, so they may have been married in Spotsylvania Co., VA, but no record has been found there either.
With the following deed entry in Louisa Co., VA, we can probably pinpoint the time when John & Nancy Ann left Louisa Co., VA for Kentucky.
"John Hancock and Anne, his wife of Louisa County, to Aaron Fontaine of said county, 60:100 acres , purchased of Anthony GOLDEN and 100 acres purchased of Clifton ALLEN, June 11, 1787." [Source: Deed Book F. 10, Louisa Co., VA, Vol. 1, p. 475]
They thus appear to have left Louisa Co., VA ca 1787 and are soon found in records of Woodford Co.,KY; Fayette Co., KY; & Franklin Co., KY.
They finally emigrated to Reily Twp., Butler Co., OH. According to estate papers, John is said to have died 20 Oct 1827 in Hanover Twp., Butler Co., OH at the home of his daughter, Nancy (HANCOCK) JONES. His widow, Nancy (GRAVES) HANCOCK survived her husband and died in Reily Twp., Butler Co., OH in 1846.
...............................4 Thomas Graves HANCOCK, Sr. 1776 - 1848
................................... + (1) Jemima HAYDON ???? - Bef. 1810
Thomas Graves HANCOCK remained in Franklin Co., KY where he married three times. He became a widower after the deaths of #1 Jemima & #2 Elizabeth. Thomas Graves HANCOCK was also known as "Graves HANCOCK" and is not to be confused with his brother, Graves HANCOCK, of Butler Co., OH. It appears from some records that the brothers have been confused, and Graves HANCOCK of Butler Co., OH has been credited as the husband of Elizabeth COX. However, Graves HANCOCK of Butler Co., OH did marry an Elizabeth, but her maiden name is unknown. It is said that Thomas Graves HANCOCK was a political representative, but this has not been validated yet.

Jane's placement in this family is unknown. She is said to be a dau/o Thomas & Jemima according to some records, yet she is not named in the will of her maternal grandfather, as are her siblings: James, Maria, & John. Her birth takes place before Thomas' marriage to #2 Elizabeth COX. Why was she not named in the will of her grandfather who appears to have written his will after the death of his daughter, Jemima? It does not appear that Sylvender was reared by his father and his new wife, but continued to be reared by a Swanson Lunsford GRIFFITH & his wife, Nancy ORCUTT. However, it is known that he did visit his father in Decatur Co., IN and perhaps even lived with him from time to time. Sylvender's death record names Thomas HANCOCK as his father. There is no known relationship between the HANCOCK, SMITH, GRIFFITH or ORCUTT families, but each couple was married in Campbell Co., KY. Perhaps the GRIFFITHs were merely foster parents.

in the Pension Record of Austin HANCOCK as having been
reared in the same neighborhood...which could indicate
any type of relationship...brothers...cousins...etc.
It is my belief that Joseph & Austin were brothers.

Joseph HANCOCK & Nancy DICKENSON had at least one son
Joseph HANCOCK Jr. who
was born in 1791 and died sometime after 1850 when he

JAMES MONROE HANCOCK, farmer, of Bordley Precinct, is the son of John and
Susan P. (Graves) Hancock. His father, a hero of the Second War with Great
Britain, and a pioneer of Todd County, Ky., was born in Hancock County, Va. [sic...See NOTE below.]
He married in Louisa County, Va., in 1812; removed to Todd County in 1819,
and died there in 1851. Our subject's grandfathers were Joseph Hancock and
Wm. Graves, both Virginians. Our subject was born in Louisa County, Va.,
March 2d, 1816. He came to Todd County with his father, and received two
years' training in the Todd County schools. He married Catherine A. Frazier
in Todd County in 1845, and had six [primary record differs at this time] children by her, viz: John Frazier
married Nancy Helzer, and is a farmer in Todd County; Amelia Ann married
John Jenkins, a farmer of Union County; Sarah Ann married Thomas Coffman, a
farmer of Union, married Mary Martin; Catherine A., married James Roberts;
Wm. Wallace went to Texas, but is probably dead, as he has not been heard
from for a long time. Mr. Hancock's first wife died in 1862 [sic...primary record differs], and he was
married the second time to Harriett Jeffries, of Virginia, by whom he had
three children. Mr. Hancock has eighty acres of land, fifty acres of which
are under cultivation. He has belonged to the Baptist Church for fifty odd
years.
(Source: History of Union Co., KY, 1886, p. 727: JAMES MONROE
HANCOCK)
[NOTE: John HANCOCK was probably not born in Hancock Co., VA
as stated, but probably in Hanover Co., VA where his father, Joseph
HANCOCK, made his home. ASH]
JOHN [sic...See NOTE below.] MONROE HANCOCK, son of John Hancock, was born in Virginia in 1816.
John Hancock brought his family to Todd County, Kentucky. There J. M.
Hancock married Catherine A. Frazier in 1845, and several years later moved
to Union County. Upon the death of Mrs. Hancock in 1862 [sic...primary record differs], J. M. Hancock
married Harriett Jeffries, by whom he had three children.
(Source: Union County Past and Present, The Era of Settlement,
1941, p. 37)
[NOTE: This is probably an error in the book as John Monroe HANCOCK
is probably really James Monroe HANCOCK. The rest agrees with the
information in the 1886 History and family research. ASH]
James Monroe HANCOCK, s/o John HANCOCK & Susan Pettus GRAVES of Louisa Co., VA & Todd Co., KY, married (1) Catherine A. FRAZIER b 12 Jun 1825, d 6 June 1856, & buried Old Salem Cemetery, Union Co., KY. [Catherine's gravestone gives birth and death dates.] James & Catherine were the parents of John F. & William W. After Catherine's death, James married (2) Mrs. Harriet (JEFFREYS) SCOTT, widow of Peter G. SCOTT. [Marriage Certificates: JEFFREYS-SCOTT & SCOTT-HANCOCK with William JEFFREYS, security, for both] Peter & Harriet had one child, Bell SCOTT, before his death. James & (2) Harriet had issue: Sarah E., Caswell G., & Catherine A. Harriet was the sister of William Lewis JEFFREYS, husband of Sarah C. HANCOCK, who was the dau/o Benjamin HANCOCK & America WALLER of Louisa Co., VA. The 1850 Federal Census indicates Harriet was born in NC and at the time was living with her brother, William Lewis (b Caswell Co., NC) & America.
