The Simon Scott Family

by Shirley (McLaughlin) Kohlstaedt
about 1978

Simon Scott and his wife Elizabeth (Lizzie) left Linn Creek, Missouri on February 16, 1925 at 3 a.m. Their possessions were hauled by a neighbor in his new Model T. Ford truck.

They arrived in Warrenburg, Missouri at 7 p.m. where they spent the night, starting their journey at 7 a.m. the next morning. They arrived at Buckner, Missouri on February 17, 1925 at 4 p.m. and settled on what was known as the Luther Wheeler place, now owned by Henry Stephens. Later, they moved into town to the old Cravens place at 504 Osage Street, Buckner, Missouri.

Their children were Lue Eva (McDowell), George Harrison, Charles Franklin, Hattie Mae (McLaughlin), and Alta Ellen (Toler). Two children, Alice Isabell and Greenberry, died in infancy. Alta, the youngest child is still living, 79 years of age and resides at Barnett, Missouri.

Current members still living at Buckner are Mrs. Charley (Minnie) Scott who will be 90 years of age May 15, 1975; one daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford (Ethel) Jones, two sons, Pleasy of the home at Cook's Trailer court and Mr. and Mrs. Avery Scott and two daughters, Cathy Scott and Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Holt (Betty Jean) and family.

Margaret Scott is employed at the First State Bank of Buckner. Pleasy Scott served on the City Council as alderman from the second ward for five years.

Hattie McLaughlin lived at 110 McLaughlin Street until her death January 5, 1974 at the age of 82 years. To the "old times" Simon Scott can be remembered carrying the mail back and forth from the depot to the Post Office. He died February 13, 1953 at the age of 92 years.

Elisha Scott
Was born in Boone county, Indiana, July 20th, 1840, emigrated with
his parents to Laclede county, Mo., in the fall of 1850, united to
the Christian church in 1858 or 59, being baptized in the Dry Glaze,
volunteered in the Union army in June 1861; was mustered out
November 20th, 1865, at Benton Barracks, Mo. Was married
March 24th, 1864, to Miss Mary H. Wood, and moved to Greenwood
county, Kansas, in April, 1883. “The first vote I ever
cast was for Abraham Lincoln for his second term for president.”

The above was written by Mr. Scott some time prior to his death,
and in anticipation of that event, as he had been in very poor
health for several years past. In fact more than a year ago it
was not thought possible that he could live but a very short time.
Consumption was the dreaded disease with which he had to contend.
He died January 6th, 1901. His wife survives him.
No man in our town was held in higher esteem then was Elisha Scott.
In his death the community loses a good citizen.
