Application

This is a copy of the first application filled out by James Henry Atwood on the day he and Ella returned to Sumrall with their new little girl. On the following Monday he wrote a short letter addressed to Mrs. Fairley, saying that he got home safely with the child and that she had enjoyed the train ride. He concluded by saying how special the baby was and thanked Mrs. Fairley for her help. A copy of the letter was in the Children's Home file, but unfortunately the copy I have is too faint to scan properly.

Notice that it says "Read carefully the other side of this application." There is no "other side" on the copies we have. On one trip to Jackson to the Society's office (about 1990) we were allowed to look through the entire file and I think I noticed that the reverse side of the application was blank.

Papa Jim filled out a second application in March, 1918. It appears to have been mailed to him following a visit from a social worker and we believe it was done because the Mississippi Children's Home Society suddenly realized that they had no information about the baby girl living with the Atwoods.
