Richard Hussey, supposedly a native of England or Ireland, was born
about 1662. He and his wife, Jane Hussey, arriving from England about
1690, settled in Dover, New Hampshire, according to "Early Settlers
of Nantucket" by Lydia S. Hinchman. He appeared in the 1790 tax list
of Dover. He was described as "a weaver
of Dover," in a deed dated in 1696.
Some researchers have attempted to establish that Richard Hussey was a son of Joseph Hussey, who appeared early in New Hampshire and a grandson of Christopher Hussey of Hampton, New Hampshire. Others have ascribed various other relationships for them.
Farmer in his "General Register of the First Settlers of New England" suggests that Joseph Hussey was a son of Christopher Hussey. "One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families" concurs. Frank R. Holmes in his "Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families, 1620-1700" states that Captain Joseph Hussey was a brother to Christopher Hussey. He was named as a representative to the General Court from Hampton a short time before his death there in 1672, according to "Genealogical Dictionary of New England."
A letter written about 1880 and published in a genealogical column of the "Boston Transcript" advocates the Farmer theory. The letter, apparently a rebuttal to one written by "W," was signed by "S.H.H." [possibly Sylvanus Harlow Hussey, a merchant of Blaine, Maine who operated S. H. Hussey and Company there from 1869 until at least 1881]. The letter reads:
"I have a letter before me from Mr. Whittier [John Greenleaf Whittier, a descendant of Richard Hussey] dated 5th, 4th, 1876, in which he says,
'Joshua Coffin, the late historian of Newbury (and who knew more of our antiquities and genealogies than any one else) always told me I was a descendant of Christopher Hussey on my mother's side in common with Daniel Webster and others. My Grandfather was Samuel Hussey of Somersworth, N. H. One of my uncles was named Joseph [Joseph Evans Hussey]. I have understood that the Husseys of Hampton were of our family.'
"This coincides with his statement, and I do not see why Richard [Richard Hussey] might not have been a son of Joseph and a grandson of Christopher [Christopher Hussey]. He might easily have been so from the date of his birth (1670), the children of Christopher having been born between 1630 and 1640. Joseph not having been mentioned in his father's will may be accounted for by his having offended him, or having been lost sight of and supposed to be dead. [Joseph Hussey had been dead for 12 years when Christopher Hussey wrote his will in 1684-85.]
"Henry Dow, a direct descendant of Christopher Hussey through his daughter Mary [Mary Hussey], was a noted antiquary and wrote a history of the Hampton family, which has been lately published by his daughter Lucy. Undoubtedly that would throw some light on the matter.
It seems very strange that Mr. Coffin's papers cannot be found, as
they, according to Mr. Whittier, are most valuble. I should think
his family might give some information in regard to them. Unless
"W" can find who the parents and grandparents of Richard are, I see no
reason to doubt that he was descended from Joseph, Christopher's son.
S. H. H."
Richard Hussey received a grant of 30 acres "at Sligo" [later Somersworth, New Hampshire], and on April 16, 1694 received an additional 50 acres "laid out in Somersworth." An audit taken April 20, 1731 of the records of Dover revealed that the 50-acre grant probably was fraudulent, according to "Colonial Era History of Dover, New Hampshire" by John Scales.
On June 20, 1696 he sold to Leonard Weeks an interest in 30 acres of upland "adjoining to ye Great Bay in ye town of Dover between William Furber and Thomas Willey, except three acres disposed of, or given to Thomas Canney" Thomas Canney was his son-in-law. Richard Hussey was a witness to the will of James Stackpole November 11, 1706 in Berwick, Maine, according to "Maine Wills."
Richard Hussey sold the "30 acres at Sligo" to Benjamin Waymouth "2nd, 25th, 1710" for 13 pounds. The deed specified, "One Messuage or tract of land being a Grant to me the said Richard Huzsey by the Town of Dover, Sittuate Lying and being att a Garrison Called Sligoe In the Town and Province above said Containing by estimation 30 acres." In the deed Jane Hussey released "all her right of dowrie and power of thirds," but did not sign the deed. Her signature to the first deed and his signature to both deeds were made "by mark," according to Burton N. Derick, Hussey researcher of Mineral Wells, West Virginia.
Richard Hussey died prior to 1729. His wife administered the estate until Richard Hussey, their son, was named administrator of her estate August 21, 1733. Apparently she had died shortly before.
Job Hussey and Joseph Hussey, sons of Richard Hussey deeded to Joseph Wallingford July 5, 1743 some "upland and Swamp Ground near the Great Falls in the Parish of Somersworth," which is described as part of a "Fifty Acre Grant" made to their late father in 1694.

Richard Hussey sold the homestead to Thomas Wallingford March 13, 1754 who deeded it back to him March 5, 1757, according to "New Hampshire Provincial Deeds." He sold the property August 31, 1765 to Moses Roberts for 500 pounds in preparation for a move to Lebanon, Maine.
On August 31, 1768 Richard Hussey "of Lebanon, in the County of York and state of Massachusetts" [later Maine] conveyed to Ebenezer Clements for 15 pounds, 15 shillings "the Pew in Dover first Parish meeting house Number Four," according to "New Hampshire Provincial Deeds." On May 20, 1776 Richard Hussey was chosen as a member of the Committee of Safety.
