John Cox, son of Joseph Cox and Ama "Amy" Baker Cox, was born September 28, 1813 in Ross County, Ohio.  He was brought to Missouri by his father.  He was married to Sarah Moberly April 21, 1839 in Livingston County, Missouri.  He was remarried there April 28, 1846 to Matilda Castle of Quincy, Illinois.

He joined his father in a move to Bell County, Texas in 1851 and died there April 18, 1874 and was buried in Plesant Hill Cemetery.  Matilda Castle Cox was remarried to Charles B. Fade and died in Bell County June 2, 1902.

He was married about 1879 to Josephine Savannah Miller who was born November 25, 1865.  He was remarried about 1901 to Ellen Josephine Murphy who was born February 22, 1884.  He died July 21, 1941.  In 1955 she lived in Killeen, Texas. Josephine Savannah Miller Cox died November 11, 1946.

Hugh Martin Cox was recognized as the oldest fiddler who entered the Old Fiddlers' Contest, according to the July 5, 1955 edition of "Belton Journal," which reported that his fiddle dated back to 1734.  He was interviewed on Easter Sunday, 1960 in Killeen by Arlee Claud Gowen.
