She wrote a letter in 1969 to Mary Alnora "Nora" Cox Drennan (C2/10.4) who was researching the Whitmire family history at that time:

                                                  "Fair Oaks, California, 95628

                                                   November 5, 1969

My Dear Mrs. Drennan,

I was so happy to have your good letter this A.M.  I am afraid I won't be able to give you much information on the questions you asked.  I don't remember hearing my Dad speak of any of his folk except his brothers, John and Kenchin, and if he had any sisters I don't remember hearing him say anything about them.  I was born April 6, 1888, so you see I am not a spring chicken.

Are all your sisters living?  I remember seeing all the sisters you mentioned, and didn't Fannie [Fannie Alice McCall (M3/3.3)] marry George Holley?  They were right across the street from Maggie [Margaret Whitmire Compton (W4/8.7)] in Georgetown.  That's been many years ago.  I remember Ollie [Oliver Elijah McCall (M3/3.6)], too.

I don't know who Brushy Ace's father was.  That was before I was born.  He married my aunt Margaret Pounds, but they separated soon after, had no children.  [Margaret C. Pounds was married to Pony Whitmire March 6, 1879, according to Williamson County Marriage Book 5, page 10.]  She remarried my uncle, Elliston Collins, mother's brother.  Ace never married again.  He used to come to see us often.  The last time I saw him he had gotten his neck broken, and I don't know how long he lived after that.  Do you know how old Brushy Ace Whitmire and Rocky Ace Whitmire [Asa C. "Ace" Whitmire (W4/7.1)] were when they died?  They were Papa's nephews . . . anyway they always spoke of Papa as 'Uncle Carr.'  Do you know if any of their family is still living?

I last saw Becky [Rebecca Vera Whitmire Allen (W3/1.9)] was in 1908.  She taught school at Berry's Creek near Georgetown.  One time I heard that Becky married a man by the name of Allen.  That's all I know about them.  I don't know who the other girls married or who the McCall girls married or if they are living.  Do you know if Alf [Alfred H. Whitmire (W3/1.6)] and Boss [William Henry "Boss" Whitmire (W3/1.1)] married?

Aunt Creasie Lord [Lucretia "Crecy" Fish Lord (F5/1.11)] was Dad's first wife's sister.  And do you know who *John Dykes mother was?  Jodie Ward married *Jack Dykes.  I don't know if he was John's brother or not.  You know Jodie was Ann Fish's daughter by her first husband.

My mother was Hester Collins.  She and Papa married in Williamson County near Georgetown.  Papa is buried by the side of his first wife down on the Lord Ranch, about six miles from Georgetown.  I went to see their graves once.  She has a marker, but I don't think Papa does.  I heard they had put a lot of the land into cultivation now, and it has taken in the graves, but someone fenced in the graves.

You know, people used to bury their folk any old place.  Papa has four children buried on the Howell Ranch about a mile from the old home.  We kids used to go to the graves quite often.  I did not go to school at Chalk Ridge; I went to Yarbrough School.  It was right near Uncle Joe's home.  He and Aunt Matt took in the teacher.

I remember your grandmother Nancy McCall [Nancy Almeda Whitmire McCall (W4/7.7)].  I remember your mother, Cinda McCall [Amanda Lucinda "Cinda" McCall Cox (M3/3.1)] and John [John Hugh McCall (M3/3.2) and Mary [Mary Rosella McCall Mullen [M3/3.5] and some of the others.  I remember Aunt Amanda Whitmire [Amanda M. Fish Whitmire (F5/1.2)] and her children, Aunt Roach [Christianna "Roach" Whitmire (W4/7.4] and Ike [Isaac A. Whitmire (W4/7.6)] who were Nancy's sister and brother.

I remember there were two men named Ace Whitmire whom I have already mentioned.  One was called Rocky Ace because he lived 'on Rocky Creek,' and one was called Brushy Ace because he lived 'on Brushy Creek.'  I think they were cousins.

My father's name was Carr Whitmire, and he was married twice.  His first wife was Jerusha Fish [(F5/1.7)], and they had the following children:

Becky [Rebecca "Becky" Whitmire (W4/8.2)] who married Jim Fielder.

Lou [(W4/8.1)]  who married Jess Calder.

Eda  [(W4/8.3)] who married Frank Yarbrough

Jane [Mary Jane Whitmire (W4/8.6)] who married Louis Pegram

Mell [Melonia Whitmire (W4/8.5)] who married John Hargrove

Maggie [Margaret Whitmire (W4/8.7)] who married Billie Compton

Ebb [(W4/8.4)] who married Matt Osteen

All these are deceased.  There are all Papa's first children.  I loved them all dearly, as if they were my full sisters, and Ebb was a wonderful person.  I loved him dearly.

Yes, we are related to the Calders.  Charlie Calder did live at Lometa, Texas the last I heard.  He is Lou and Jess Calder's son.

Ebb's daughter and her baby were killed in Georgetown around 1908 when their mules were frightened by car lights.  You know, that was when cars first began to get on the roads, and there were many accidents and deaths from teams being frightened by them.  Their team became frightened and backed their wagon off a bridge and they drowned.  Her name was Willie Maggie Whitmire.  She married Robert McDonald.  He remarried after Willie's death.

I can remember Jim and Can Shedd [Canzada "Can" Whitmire Shedd (W4/7.3)] coming to our house when I was about 4 or 5 years old.  "Rocky" Ace Whitmire [(W4/7.1)] married Claricie Shedd [Clarissa Abigail Shedd Whitmire (S4/1.1)].  She and Jim Shedd were brother and sister.  I remember John and Jess were Rocky's boys, also Alf and Boss and Otho were his boys.

Are you a daughter of Jim Cox [James Madison Cox (C3/4.10)] or Tom Cox [Jehu Thomas Cox (C3/4.6)]?  They were real tall men and used to come to see Maggie [Margaret C. Whitmire (W4/8.7)], my half sister.

Becky Whitmire [Rebecca Vera Whitmire (W3/1.9)] taught school on Berry's Creek, three miles north of Georgetown.  That is about the last time I ever saw her.  I really thought a lot of her.  She boarded with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Turner.  I also lived with the Turners for some time.

I have made my own way since I was 12 years old.  I don't want to bore you with my troubles, but sometimes it helps to air the past.

I want to say before I close that Ebb [W4/8.4] and Matt [(O4/1.1)] are buried at Jericho; Billy [Billy Compton (C4/1.1)] and Maggie [Margaret Whitmire Compton (W4/8.7)] are buried in Georgetown; Louis [William Pegram (P4/1.1)] and Jane [Mary Jane Whitmire Pegram (W4/8.6)] are buried at Copperas Cove; Mell [Melonia Whitmire Hargrove (W4/8.5) is buried at Sour Lake; Jim [Jim Fielder (F4/1.1) and Becky Fielder [Rebecca "Becky" Whitmire Fielder (W4/8.1) are buried in the Buck Cemetery near Andice.  I do not know where Eadie [Eda Whitmire Yarbrough (W4/8.3)] and Frank Yarbrough are buried, but probably at Copperas Cove as they lived there a long time.

They told me that Boss [William Henry "Boss" Whitmire (W3/1.1)] went to [New] Mexico and was doing real well.  I suppose they have all gone on before now, as they were all older than I.

I have been a widow for 29 years.  I am living now with my son and his wife and have been here more than two years.  I have a family of four, two sons and two daughters.  One son and one daughter live in Austin.  The boys served in World War II.  My oldest son came home with a slight shoulder wound.  I am so thankful to have them home.  My oldest son fought in Battle of Normandy.  Thomas served 20 years.  He was in the air force and was stationed here at Hickman Field.

I believe I have told you all I know about the Whitmire clan.  I, too, wish I knew more about them.  I believed Papa said he came from Mississippi.  I hope I have been some help to you in writing your family tree.  I have got to where I am so shakey I hate to try to write.  I hope you can read this.  Glad you wrote me and hope to hear from you again.

                                             Sincerely,

                                             Iva Whitmire Hausenfluck"

Ora Ethel Cox Gowen (C2/10.1) in 1984, at age 89, mentioned that she remembered "Brushy Ace" Whitmire and believed him to be a cousin to her mother.  She recalled that he did not live near them, but visited them each fall to pick cotton.  She reported, "He was a good worker, but getting old.  Once in picking cotton, one of the kids beat him, and it made him mad, and he picked up his sack and left.  He said he wasn't going to work anywhere a kid could beat him.  We never saw him again."

Iva Whitmire Hausenfluck (W4/8.8) wrote a second letter to Mrs. Drennan the following year after she had returned to Austin:

                                                "Austin, Texas

                                                 May 1970

Dear Nora,

You were speaking of pictures in the Georgetown Courthouse.  Papa said one day when he was in town they told him they wanted to take his picture as they were making all the old timers pictures.  So I am the only one that has his picture, and, of course, I am real proud of it.  I look at it every time I go in there. [His picture in the pioneers gallery is imprinted with the date of his arrival in Williamson County--April 1851.]

Did you notice the old log houses in those pictures?  I was born in one like those.  Papa hewed the logs and built his own house, and we were all born there. After Papa sold the place the man moved it over on his place for a barn.  So I have never seen it but one time, and it looked so small I don't think Mr. Howell used all the logs, some may have been rotten and not fit to use.

You spoke of the old Fish place.  Is that where the spring is just under the hill? I wonder if that spring is still running.  I first remember that place by the name of the Dykes place for *John and Jack Dykes used to live there.  Then after them the Comptons lived there, and the last ones that lived there were the Thompsons.

He walled up the spring and irrigated a few acres of vegetables and hauled them to Georgetown and sold them.  He really made a lot of stuff, but he only lived there two or three years.  Then they moved back to Georgetown, and I don't remember any more about them.  I suppose they have passed on.

Mr. Howell, Spencer's Grand-dad, bought the place, and I don't know who owns it now.  I wish I could go back there one more time to see our old place.  I have only been there once since the house was moved, and it seemed so lonely.  I wish I could go buy it, build a shack and live there the rest of my life which I know is not long.  I am living on borrowed time.  I cannot see very well, but grateful that I can see as well as I do.

                                        Love to all, your cousin,

                                        Iva Whitmire Hausenfluck"

*Felma G. Headrick of Georgetown wrote of the Dykes November 18, 1969:

"Ellen Scudder of Mazie, Oklahoma may be dead.  She was in bad health the last Mama heard from her.  Her brother and sister usta live here--the sister died--then Ellen taken the brother home with her, then he died.  Ellen first married a Dykes.  Ellen has two sons by Dykes.  Maybe their father was this James Alford Dykes you mentioned.  My father's mother was an Alford.  I imagine this James Alford Dykes' mother was an Alford and related to us.  Did Mrs. Mott give you any information about Osteen?  He was an Indian or part.  We heard on the news at noon that Iva Whitmire Hausenfluck's son Thomas was drowned in California.  They are bringing him to San Antonio for burial.  He is the son that Iva lived with, so I guess she is a sad mother today.  Iva has children living in Florence."
