- I'm looking for information on a GOODMAN-GARNER
marriage. I have a James M. GARNER married to an unknown

- This information comes from a book on the Herndons. Grandmother Clarissa
"Clara" Georganna Herndon Goodman (b 30 Jan 1849 in Ala., d 24 Oct
1942 in Electra, TX) married William "Jackson" Goodman
(b 14 Nov 1840, d 24 Feb 1920, Pike, TX) in 1873 as his 3rd wife; he had
5 sons, 2 by his first wife and 3 by the second. William Goodman
served in Co. A, 57th Ala. Reg., CSA, with Clara's father, so he probably
born in Ala. Grandmother said, "We moved to Texas in 1884...we stayed in
Fannin County 7 years, then bought a farm in Collin County, on Indian Creek,
and farmed there 17 years. Then we bought another farm, near Pike,
and a home and grocery store in Pike. We lived there until 1920.
William and Clara had 7 children, 6 sons and, finally, a daughter. Grandfather
was also minister, Methodist, I believe. I'll be pleased to share anything
I have for your research.

and stayed behind in Alabama), James Matthew, Samuel
B, Daniel, Jacob Lenard (became a legislator in Texas), Luke, Robert Winn,
Loula, George Washington, and Layfette..........
I would like information about ,especially, Mathew (spelled with
only one t) and about Mary, his wife. My grandfather was George W.

- Looking for my GOODMAN ancestors of TN, KY, MO, IL and AR.
My ggggrandfather, Lemuel Oliver GOODMAN (sometimes listed on census as
Samuel GOODMAN) was located on the 1836 and 1838 Wayne County Tax Lists
in Civil District No. 1. And located again in Wayne Co TN on the 1840 Census.
Along with Lemuel on the 1836 Wayne Co Tax List was Abijah (or Abisha)
GOODMAN. Although Abisha was not found on the 1838 Wayne Co Tax List
he again surfaced on the 1840 Maury
County, TN census. Some of the other first names of my GOODMAN
family include HOSEA, HEZEKIAH, ABRAM, HENRY, and ERVIN, JINCY ANN, DARINDA
CATHERINE, and AILSEY. The GOODMAN family was found in 1850 Graves County,
KY and scattered back and forth between 1850-1900 in Graves, Ballard and
Livingston Counties of KY. Some were even found in Fayette County, IL during
the early 1840's but were back in KY by 1850. Later, around 1870-1880,
some of the GOODMAN clan moved west to MO (Stoddard, Scott, and Cape Girardeau
counties). And some were even known to be in Clay and Corning Counties
of AR after the turn of the century. Some of the collateral families known
to marry into my GOODMAN family (especially in KY) were WARD, RUST, DREW,
MARSHALL, SKELTON, MUSGROVE, TALLEY, SMITH and PAGE and WILLIAMS. Always
willing to share any family info I have. Looking forward to finding
new cousins! Debbie Goodman-Wright, 2142 SW Hyacinth Street, Port
St. Lucie, FL 34953 (561) 879-7422.

in the 40's or 50's. He had a father named Lewis Goodman.
A brother named Bill Goodman. I know that he lived and farmed in
Arkansas for a while and died in California. He married
Lula (Robertson) and they had three boys, Richard, Adam and Lawrence Goodman,
two girls, Elizabeth (Lizzie) and Lillian Goodman. My father was
Adam. He died when I was nine years old. I would like to know how
to go about doing a study.

- 11/7/98 - I was wondering if this is where I get a message over the mailing
list. My lineage goes back to an Edward Goodman who lived in Bono,
Arkansas. In the county of Craighead. He was married to Julia Arvela Gibson.
He had a son named Ernest and a daughter named Cora. It is believed she
died before the 1920 census. Julia, the mother, also died before the 1920
census. The 1910 census listed Edward as coming from Tenn. But I have no
other info. on him. Such as his father. Or even where he was born. He and
Julia were married in 1906. The only other info. I have is a draft registration.
The draft registration says he was born on Jan.15 1878. But it did have
any info. on his place of birth. None of my relatives can tell me any info.
Does anyone have any info. for me or know of any other way to get more
info. I would greatly appreciate any help

- 02/21/99 - Some of the names tied with the Goodman's that I have are:
Jenkins (married Goodman), Rolfe (married Williams), Miller (married
Hays, then Thompson), Hays and Thompson were cousins of Baldwins, Norman,
and Kitt. Some of this gets really complicated. I have the more recent
ones from my Grandparents down... My Grandmother was a Miller, she married
Hays, then Thompson, I have the family tree on the Millers, from 1826 to
present (pretty much). My Mother was a Hays and married a Goodman.
Do any of these Goodman names sound familiar to you? Greene Goodman,
Christopher Columbus Goodman, Victoria Jenkins Goodman (Jenkins is
1st husbands last name; maiden name unknown yet..) My Great Aunt Elise
is still alive..She is the daughter of Christopher Columbus Goodman and
Minnie Jenkins (maiden name) Goodman. From what I know these Goodman's
are from AR.

McAlpin Goodman IV - My great-great-great-grandfather William
Goodman married Dorothy MacDonald Allen (widow of Capt. Allen) in NC
(about 1810?) and moved to Greene Co TN. My great-great-grandfather Robert
McAlpin Goodman was born there in 1820, and his mother Dorothy died there
in 1825. William and surviving family moved to Augusta GA after that. Robert
M. Goodman eventually moved to Marietta GA where he was a newspaperman.
We know a good bit about our direct line of ancestry since then, but know
nothing beyond the above about William and Dorothy except the names of
their children.

from NC to Crawford Co. GA before 1830. He had a large family, but I have
mainly pursued the family of his son, Luke, who married Elizabeth Shirey

had children, Sarah, Hardy, Bryant, Joseph and John. Family in later years
lived in Americus, then after 1880 moved from county to county, all in
the vicinity of Tifton, where many of them are buried. Would be thrilled

- 3/28/99 - My ancestor is Bartlett or Bartholemew Goodman
whose had the settlement of his estate in Iredell Co. N.C. ca. 1800.
His family, however, resided in Logan Co. Ky. The settlement of the
estate mentions chldren: Jane (m. Edmund Nanny of Logan Co. 1805), Micajah,
George W., William Wesley, and Bartlett (b. ca. 1783 Va. and moved to Knox
and then Green Cos. Ind.
The settlement also says that Bartlett/Bartholemew's wife was "Tabitha".
I found no remarriage for her and don't know her age but did find the marriage
for a Tabitha and Joseph Tims in Christian Co. 1811 and then a family of
Joseph Tims moved to Knox Co. and resided near Bartlett in 1820.
This woman is too young to have been the mother of Bartlett etal but could
have been a younger sister. I am looking for proof of this.
I don't think that the settlement reflects all of Bartholemew's kids
. There was also an Elijah Goodman who m. in Logan Co. 1806 and later
moved to Butler Co. Ky.

8/13/99 - The earliest known GOODMAN of our family is Daniel GOODMAN
and there was not much that could be found on him. According to census,
he was born approximately in the year 1780 in South Carolina. I was
unable to find the names of his parents but I do know that he married Rhonda
BILBO (spelling of her last name is not certain, could be BILBRO or BILBRA).
Family legend has it that Daniel and Rhonda left South Carolina
after the year 1825. According to the census of 1830, there was a
Daniel GOODMAN in Crawford County, Georgia. He was also there in
the years 1840 and 1850 according to the census of those years.
The date of his keath is not known. He was found on the
1850 census at which time he would be about 70 years old. He was
not found on the 1860 census. There was a Daniel GOODMAN in Dale
County, Alabama but all records before 1875 were destroyed so we do not
know if this GOODMAN is related.
A letter from Jesse GOODMAN, jr. tells us that Daniel was full
Irish. This could be where Jesse go some of the Irish sayings that
some of the grandchildren remember him saying.

not aware of any other wifes for Wiliam. They had the following children:

Peter Goodman and his wife Barbara, of Ashe Co., NC. I don't know who Caswell's
mother was, as he seems to be the only child of a short first marriage.
Caswell was born 1825 in NC.

- Looking for my GOODMAN ancestors of TN, KY, MO, IL and AR.
My ggggrandfather, Lemuel Oliver GOODMAN (sometimes listed on census
as Samuel GOODMAN) was located on the 1836 and 1838 Wayne County Tax Lists
in Civil District No. 1. And located again in Wayne Co TN on the 1840 Census.
Along with Lemuel on the 1836 Wayne Co Tax List was Abijah (or Abisha)
GOODMAN. Although Abisha was not found on the 1838 Wayne Co Tax List
he again surfaced on the 1840 Maury County, TN census. Some of the other
first names of my GOODMAN family include HOSEA, HEZEKIAH, ABRAM,
HENRY, and ERVIN, JINCY ANN, DARINDA CATHERINE, and AILSEY. The GOODMAN
family was found in 1850 Graves County, KY and scattered back and forth
between 1850-1900 in Graves, Ballard and Livingston Counties of KY. Some
were even found in Fayette County, IL during the early 1840's but were
back in KY by 1850. Later, around 1870-1880, some of the GOODMAN
clan moved west to MO (Stoddard, Scott, and Cape Girardeau counties).
And some were even known to be in Clay and Corning Counties of AR after
the turn of the century. Some of the collateral families known to marry
into my GOODMAN family (especially in KY) were WARD, RUST, DREW, MARSHALL,
SKELTON, MUSGROVE, TALLEY, SMITH and PAGE and WILLIAMS. Always willing

- I'm still searching for the parents of Josiah Goodman, born 1810
in OH. I
found the free time to spend most of yesterday at the FHC here in Mesa,
AZ and found a little more information - not much - but a little.
In the 1880 Census he listed his father as being born in KY and his
mother born in VA. If anyone out there has KY connections and found
a line that disappeared from KY before 1810, I would really appreciate
any help. The Goodman names I found in the 1820 OH Census Index that
may pertain are Daniel, George, James, John, Peter and Timothy
S. or L. I didn't copy the 1810 Census Index so, if I remember
correctly, it wasn't any help.
Josiah named his sons Kenney, Quincy, John, Putnam, James,
Thomas and William. Kenney named his sons Henry, Samuel, Benjamin Franklin,
and George Washington.
Also, James and Thomas, sons of Josiah, were twins. Grabbing
at straws now, but am trying to give all information I have. Quincy
named his sons George, Isaac and Daniel/David (census difficult to read).

Later, around 1870-1880,
some of the GOODMAN clan moved
west to MO (Stoddard, Scott, and Cape Girardeau counties). And
some were even known to be in Clay and Corning Counties of AR after the
turn of the century. Some of the collateral families known to marry into
my GOODMAN family (especially in KY) were WARD, RUST, DREW, MARSHALL, SKELTON,
MUSGROVE, TALLEY, SMITH and PAGE and WILLIAMS. Always willing to share
any family info I have. Looking forward to finding new cousins!

Sampson was born Oct. 8, 1806 (in KY/TN/VA?). Sampson and Sarah moved
to Polk County, MO between Sept. of 1842 and Dec. of 1843 (he was on the
1844 tax list for Polk County). They had the following children: Frances,

the Christian Church at San Antonio, Missouri, east of St. Joseph.
Mary Ann "Polly" Blakely Cornelius also had one son, Benjamin, who was
sometimes known as Ben Goodman. Together Caswell and Mary Ann
(Blakely) Goodman had: Rebecca Jane b. 18 May 1853; Rachel W. 24 Oct 1855;
Mary Ann b. 21 Aug 1857; James C. b. 16 Apr 1859; Armelda Cully b. 17 Jul

(Luemma) b. 20 Dec 1867; [Aninfurt] b. 1 May 1870; Elisabeth b. 2 Nov 1871.
These dates are from the Goodman-Johnson Family Bible in my possesion,
but most are confirmed from other records, except we don't know who [Aninfurt]
was. Rachel died 9 Nov 1857.
Caswell was the son of Peter Goodman
b. abt 1800; d. 1857 in Buchanan Co. MO and an unknown first wife.
Peter's second wife: he m. 20 Feb 1838 in Johnson County, MO Mary "Polly"

Caroline 1843; William b. 1846; Peter b. Aug 1850; and Mary Ellen.
I believe that Peter was the son of Peter Goodman of Ashe County, NC and
his wife Barbara, but I have NO PROOF, yet.
I also have Peter Goodman's (1800 - 1857) estate papers
as well as Caswell's. I've written for the Peter Goodman of Ashe County's
will and probate that I found in an index of NC wills, and I'm sure he'll
name a son Peter, proving that it's my Peter will be another thing.
However, the names that Peter gave his family so closely track the Ashe

Giles Goodman
- I was wondering whether any of my extended Jewish family may be in
New York. Our Great Grandfather Abraham Goodman came from Konstatin
in Russia back in 1800s. He came to London where my family resides but
I have a feeling that other members of his family went to New York. Any
ideas on helping locate any of them would be gratefully received.
-
Hi Giles, (Craig Brockman)
Just scanning through the Goodman web page, found your note interesting,
more so coincidental. My grandfather was Abraham Goodman, born as
Abraham Kosofsky in London England on July 1, 1900. His mother escaped
the pogrom to London from Russia. In 1905 when at the age of 5 yrs old
he came to the U.S. and settled here for the remainder of his life in Brooklyn,
N.Y. He had legally changed his name to his mothers maiden name of Goodman.
His father and mother had divorced while in England, with his father, my
great-grandfather, taking residence in Scotland as an author. We have been
told that when as an author he used a penned name, unknown what name he
used. I know that this Abraham, is definitely not your great-grandfather
but maybe there is some relations involved somewhere. We are from Jewish
heritage. If there is any inkling about a relation let me know, I have
just received Abraham's US Citizen papers with his picture on it, he waited
till 1940 to become one. I would be more than happy to scan it and forward
it to you. Take care.

- 12/4/99 - I'm searching for some record of the death of Richard Goodman
who was born in Ireland about 1790, came to New York City (on the brig
"Marcus Hill") with his wife Catherine (Hughes) on 14 Nov 1815. Catherine
died in NYC on 27 Oct 1820. Richard married again in 1821, but apparently
left his second wife (Anne, who died in Feb 1832) in about 1830.
His younger son, Christopher Columbus Goodman (born NYC 24 December
1817) spent time and effort searching for him in Ohio and the midwest before
settling down in Oakwood, Texas, but no trace was or has been found. His
older son James Goodman (born NYC 5 May 1816) settled on eastern Long Island,
N.Y. in Speonk and Westhampton. Any leads about this Richard
Goodman would be appreciated.

12/4/99 -Searching for information about Joseph Otis Goodman (born
11 Sep 1848 in Westhampton, LI, NY, died 2 Jan 1881 not known where).
He was the second oldest of 5 sons of James Goodman (5 May 1816-23
Nov 1896) and Delilah Ann Phillips (12 Jan 1824-6 June 1877)). Joseph
was a great great uncle of mine; most other facts are known about
the family, but Joseph Otis Goodman remains elusive. Family tradition
is that he went to Baltimore, Maryland to seek his fortune and there married
a Betsey A. Dolby. But we have no documentation at all of him.

Always willing
to share any family info I have. Looking forward to finding new cousins!

- I have been scanning all the queries and I don't know if any of them
fit into my family. I am looking for the family of ALFRED
GOODMAN. He moved with his wife, MARY MCQUAY, from Indiana

because they are listed in the Missouri Census - 1860 - Pulaski Co.
According to the census, he was born in Tennesee. He was born between

Does anyone have a family from Tennessee that has a son, Alfred, that moved
to Indiana - or maybe a whole family?

- 3/5/99 - We are looking for information about a David Lester Goodman.
We believe he was born in 1892 Pine Flats, Sullivan County, Tenn. His parents
were Jacob Goodman and Catherine Cross. We also believe he was in
the Bakersfield (Kern County) area of California (specifically McKittrick)
around 1920. Twin brothers James Arthur and Walter, born 1895, were also
there, according to the 1920 census. Census records show James was married
to Sarah and they had a son Arthur. According to obituary information,
Walter (Blaine?) died in 1944 in Mariciopa (Kern County), California. His
wife was listed as Bonnie McKeen. He worked for Richfield Oil Company and
was a WWI veteran. He is buried in the Wesdie District Cemetery, Taft,
Calif. We have been told that James also died in California, but was buried
in Tennessee. Another brother, John Edward, born 1886, was also believed
to be in the same area of California. He or his son was a pharmacist, but
we have hit a dead end there. David was also in the Wellston, Ohio, area
around 1918. We are anxious for any information that will get us going
again.

was listed on the Llano county Texas 1880 census with his (second at least)
wife, Martha A. Hoffman (?) and a daughter Sarah Ann, one year old. My
great grandfather, William Nathan Goodman, was listed in the household
as 22 years of age. The place of birth for Samuel was listed as Tennessee.
His father's place of birth was South Carolina and his mother was born
in North Carolina. William Nathan Goodman listed his place of birth as
Texas and his mother's (Samuel's first wife) as Alabama. Assuming this
is correct, this would make Samuel's state of residence as Texas by 1860.
I have found no mention of Samuel in the 1860 or 1870 Texas census reports.
However, through land records, I can locate Samuel in Llano county by 1877
and probably leaving the county by 1889.

to the JH's death record in Nacagodoches County, TX) Marr 26 May 1872 to
Mary Elizabeth Hinckley, and d 23 Jan 1943 in Douglass Texas at age 93.
James Hamilton Goodman fathers name is listed in the official death record

family history is that the family moved from the Hamilton County of TN

- I'm looking for Robert or perhaps, "R.T." Goodman of VA,
born circa 1810-1830.He was the brother-in-law of my ancestor Norborne
Eugene Harries -- his wife's sister's husband. Norborne's wife's
name was Mahala Philadelphia Smith. So
Mrs. Goodman would have been a Smith, of Hollins (?) VA. Mahala
was born in 1830.
The Harrises were married in Powhatan County, but I believe lived closer
to Mrs. Goodman when they lived in Buckingham County. Perhaps even
lived with her for a time -- during the war. They were at Mrs. Goodman's
Estate when Lee surrendered. These Goodmans owned property referred to
as "The Auburn Estate."

child bed fever (Puereral Sepsis) after giving birth to Susan Elizabeth
Ann Durrett who married my grandfather Thomas Mortimor Farrow on 11 May
1852.

- I am looking for information about John Goodman who died in New
Derry, Westmoreland Co. PA. John was a blacksmith who married Margaret
Miller
d/o Peter Miller (also a blacksmith) Thurs 1-19-1826. According
to a newspaper account John had been in Delaware "late of Delaware" before
his marriage to Margaret. According to the Census records he
was born in Virginia. I estimate his date of birth as 1799 or 1800.
He died in 1852. His place of burial was unknown. One newspaper
report suggested that John and Margaret had 10 children. If so, 5
of them must have died in infancy. The known children are Mary Goodman
McGuire, Margaret, Rosella Goodman Culbertson, John Goodman, and
David Goodman. After John's death, the entire family moved to Ashland
Co., Ohio. They were in Jeromesville on the border with Wayne. Co.

4/20/99 - I am looking for any information on Soloman Freeman Goodman
he was married to Mary Tyler. His son was Bert Clyde Goodman
who married Edith May Wheelock in 7-21-1897 in Tomahawk, Wisconsin.
I would assume Soloman was also from that area. If you have any information
please send it to me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

- I am interested in any references to the name Goodman in North Wales,
especially in the Lleyn (Llyn) Peninsula. My ancestor William Goodman,
a shoemaker, married Lowry Parry in Llangian in 1768 and gave rise
to 3 generations of shoemakers living in that parish and in Llannor.

My GOODMAN reference is from Cornwall born c1800 around Launceston.
The foundations of a large South Australian family Thomas HONEY was baptised
on the 25th February 1798 around Launceston, and was buried on the 9th
February 1843 at the tender age of 45 years. He was the youngest
son of John Honey and Mary Cornish of South Petherwin, Cornwall.
Thomas was married on the 16th May 1824 at the St Mary of Magdalene
Church in Launceston to Mary GOODMAN, who was also of a long
established Cornish family. She was born about 1800. They lived
in Kenner's House, a rural house on a crossroad in the farmlands around
South Petherwin, a small community about 2 miles South West of Launceston.
It was here at the crossroads that they had eight children:
BETSY GOODMAN HONEY born
29th April 1824 (bapt 16th May)
twins( KEZIA HONEY born 15th March 1826 (bapt 15th March)
( MARY HONEY
born 15th March 1826 (bapt 15th March)
THOMAS GOODMAN HONEY born
28th January 1828 (bapt 27 Jan)
JOHN HONEY born 22nd
March 1830 (bapt 13th April)
MARIA HONEY born 2nd
December 1831 (bapt 1st Jan 1832)
CHARLOTTE HONEY born
16th May 1834 (bapt 1st June)
RICHARD HONEY born
30th December 1840, and baptised on the 10th Jan 1842.
Thomas died suddenly with heart trouble on 6th February 1843, aged just
45, at South Petherwin in Cornwall. Mary was not able to raise a
strapping family of eight children on her own in the farmlands of Cornwall
as farming at that time was undergoing a severe recession, so she decided
to emmigrate. As she had goitre and knew it was probably going to
kill her within a few short years she took that very brave step into the
unknown. She sold the house in 1844, and collected together what
belongings they had, and with seven children went to Australia. The
eldest daughter, Betsy, had married in Cornwall to John Jonas so they both
joined the migration to Australia. They travelled on the barque Theresa,
a sailing vessel of 495 tons with Thomas Bacon as master, with departures
from London and Plymouth. They arrived in South Australia on the 3rd May
1847, and the Honey family
originally settled at Alberton. Four years later Mrs Mary Honey
died in Adelaide on 16th June 1851, aged 52, whilst undergoing an operation
to remove a tumour from her neck. The family were left to their own
devices. Richard was then only eight years old, but the others were
all young adults.

- Henry GOODMAN married Ann NICHOLLS and sailed to Adelaide, South
Australia, on the ship Aboukir in 1847. Their son Henry Goodman
was born in Adelaide in October 1847 - and as a teenager came to Dunedin,
New Zealand, as a jockey and horse trainer. The ship Aboukir left from
London - but I have no idea where Henry and Ann GOODMAN lived previous
to that. Their son Henry is registered as a "Foreign Birth" in Adelaide
- which would perhaps not have happened if his parents were English.

- I am researching James D. Goodman (abt 1827 - 1902) who immigrated
from England, possibly Devonshire, before 1851, to Ontario. He is
said to have landed in Boston and then made his way overland to Ontario.
He was a miller. He married Emily Gaylord abt 1854 in Ernestown
Twp., Addington Co., Ontario and later moved to Columbus, East Whitby Twp.,
Ontario Co., Ontario. He was a Methodist. Is anyone familiar with
this man or where he may have some from in England?
-
Shirley Goodman-
We are searching for the ancestry of John James Goodman, born in
Ontario, Canada on 6/26/1876. He had brothers named Norman &
William. Possibly two sisters named Ebelena & Florence.
We believe that his father's name was John as well. His mother's
name was Emma Butts. Then he immigrated to Michigan where
he married Jane Issabella Lewis in 1896. If you have any information
regarding this person or his relatives, we would appreciate hearing from
you.

- 11/5/98 - Am trying to learn about Goodmans in Russia, if they occupied
any particular part of Russia or were they scattered all over. And
would the name have been spelled differently over there? My grandmother
was Jennie (aka Lottie) Goodman who, with her husband, Isaac Klupt,
went from Russia to Brooklyn in about 1890. Her father's name was
Philip
Goodman, her mother's first name was Rachel, maiden name unknown.
Thanx for any info you may have.
