HARRIS DNA—GROUP 5

Compiled by Glenn Gohr

*This is a partial summary. It may take several weeks for any updates to this page after the last update from the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page. This is a time-consuming project.

Last updated August 1, 2015.

(Contact the webmaster with any further updates.)

This is an ongoing project seeking to chart out lines of descent that have been DNA tested as shown on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Information is based on DNA results, lineage information supplied by kit submitters, Bible records, vital records, legal documents, census records, family histories, internet sources, etc. In some cases the paper trail and/or information found on the web or other sources may be in error. Please view this information as a tool and not as proven fact.

NOTICE: Information presented in these webpages is not to be construed as PROVABLE FACTS. It is up to the user to verify all information that he/she receives. Some information has been provided by kit submitters and their own research. Other information has been added from other sources. Additions and corrections are welcome.

Lineage information in brackets { } lists the Group Number and the DNA Kit Number as found on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. The kit numbers are listed in the same order as presented on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. If you are looking for a specific kit number, click CONTROL and F at the same time. Then do a key word search by kit number or name of earliest-known ancestor. Additional information will be included as more DNA markers are tested and as more participants match up with this grouping.

Eight different lines now have been submitted for this group. There are two different lines that possibly descend from Craven Harris (ca. 1795-aft. 1850) of Blount Co., Alabama. There are also two different Micajah Harris lines. Others of the lines in this grouping have not yet been connected.

This group belongs to the R-L2 haplogroup/SNP (longhand=R1b1a2 haplogroup). Here are lineage charts (supported by DNA) that fall into Group 5 of the Harris Y-DNA Results. All spouses are not shown—only the ones that are listed as the parent of the generation that follows. For questionable generations, the names are preceded by an asterisk *. This means the connection between the person with an asterisk and the previous generation are unproven.

The modal listing of Group 5 up to 67 markers is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page.

In order to better compare matches in Group 5, the modal listing has also been posted on Ysearch with a user ID of WTHF7. To view the modal listing go to the Ysearch user ID page for WTHF7

This modal listing has also been posted at Ancestry.com on its DNA site. For those in Group 5 who have tested (or posted their results for free) with Ancestry.com, you should find a match with Group5Modal and surname Harris.

For an exact match to this group, the submitter must be a male with the HARRIS surname, be from the same haplogroup, and the DNA markers from his kit number should match exactly with these results. In most cases there will be at least one variation in DNA marker values. If the two test kits are from close relatives, then the variation is due to normal mutations of DNA. DNA mutations usually occur every 3 or 4 generations. Some specific markers tested are known to mutate faster than others. There are at least 5 lines that are represented in Group 5. Although the DNA appears to match closely, the connection between these lines has not yet been determined.

HARRIS DNA GROUP 5 LINEAGE CHARTS

Lineage #1—DNA Kit #284418. This is for the line of John Guthrie (ca. 1760-1836) of Halifax Co., Virginia.. The kit submitter lists John’s wife as Betty Ann Smith, but his wife appears to actually be Betty Ann Allen. John Guthrie is listed as a patriot by the Daughters of the American Revolution where his wife is listed as an Allen. Although this is a different surname, this kit matches closely with other kits in Harris Group 5. Possibly there is a non-parental event involved.

This family’s migration pattern is: Virginia > Halifax Co., VA > Tennessee > Graves Co., KY > Hickman Co., KY.

This is a 67-marker kit that matches the 67-marker modal for Group 5 with variances in markers 8 and 60. This kit belongs to the R-L2 haplogroup/SNP (longhand=R1b1a2 haplogroup). The kit submitter has not supplied a lineage. A few more details from other sources are added below:
