HARRIS DNA—GROUP 3

Compiled by Glenn Gohr

*This is a partial summary. It may take several weeks for any updates to this page after the last update from the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page. This is a time-consuming project.

Last updated January 1, 2017.

(Contact the webmaster with any further updates.)

This is an ongoing project seeking to chart out lines of descent that have been DNA tested as shown on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Information is based on DNA results, lineage information supplied by kit submitters, Bible records, vital records, legal documents, census records, family histories, internet sources, etc. In some cases the paper trail and/or information found on the web or other sources may be in error. Please view this information as a tool and not as proven fact.

NOTICE: Information presented in these webpages is not to be construed as PROVABLE FACTS. It is up to the user to verify all information that he/she receives. Some information has been provided by kit submitters and their own research. Other information has been added from other sources. Additions and corrections are welcome.

Lineage information in brackets lists the Group Number and the DNA Kit Number as found on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. The kit numbers are listed in the same order as presented on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. If you are looking for a specific kit number, click CONTROL and F at the same time. Then do a key word search by kit number or name of earliest-known ancestor. Additional information will be included as more DNA markers are tested and as more participants match up with this grouping.

This group belongs to the R. The new haplogroup listings adopted in 2014 conform to the ISOGG SNP nomenclature, which uses the shortened haplogroup name (one letter only) combined with the terminal SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism). In groups where kits are matched together, they will show the same haplogroup letter, but they may show different SNP designations.

See the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) page for the Y-DNA Haplogroup R and its Subclades.

Here are lineage charts (supported by DNA) that fall into Group 3 of the Harris Y-DNA Results. All spouses are not shown—only the ones that are listed as the parent of the generation that follows. For questionable generations, the names are preceded by an asterisk *. This means the connection between the person with an asterisk and the previous generation are unproven.

The modal listing of Group 3 up to 111 markers is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page.

In order to better compare matches in Group 3, the modal listing has also been posted on Ysearch with a user ID of RAU8U. To view the modal listing go to the Ysearch user ID page for RAU8U

This modal listing has also been posted at Ancestry.com on its DNA site. For those in Group 3 who have tested (or posted their results for free) with Ancestry.com, you should find a match with Group3Modal and surname Harris.

For an exact match to this group, the submitter must be a male with the HARRIS surname, be from the same haplogroup, and the DNA markers from his kit number should match exactly with these results. In most cases there will be at least one variation in DNA marker values. If the two test kits are from close relatives, then the variation is due to normal mutations of DNA. DNA mutations may occur every 4 or 5 generations. Some specific markers tested are known to mutate faster than others.

So far 12 kits have been submitted that represent Group 3. Although the DNA appears to match closely, the connection between these lines has not yet been determined.

HARRIS DNA GROUP 3 LINEAGE CHARTS
Here are lineages supplied by kit submitters as well as other documentation. The most recent representative in each line (living persons are not shown) has been tested, and their DNA markers match closely with the modal for Group 3, giving evidence for a common ancestor.

The lineage numbers assigned match up with the order in which each kit is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page.

Lineage #1.—DNA Kit #37238—Ysearch ID #T9Q9N. This is for the line of Thomas Alston Harris (ca. 1764-1827) of Abbeville District, South Carolina, General #3.

He is believed to be a son of Burr Calvert/Harris (ca. 1716-1787), who in turn is believed to be a son of John Calvert and Elizabeth “Betsy” Harrison. There is some question as to the exact lineage from Thomas Alston Harris down to the kit submitter

*It should also be noted that there are kits in Group 5 which also claim to go back to Burr Calvert/Harris.

This kit’s Ysearch user ID is T9Q9N. Additional information on this DNA Kit and the paternal line can be found on the Ysearch user ID page for T9Q9N

This family’s migration pattern is: Virginia > Northumberland Co., VA > Newberry District, SC > Abbeville District, SC > Itawamba Co., MS > Smith Co., TX.

This is a 37-marker test that matches the 111-marker modal for Group 3 except for variances at markers 6, 21 and 35. This kit belongs to the R haplogroup. The lineage supplied by the DNA Kit submitter at http://www.harrisdna.org/info/37238.html is found here:

Additional information about Paternal Line:
Thomas Harris d. 1827 Abbeville SC. Sons Thomas A. Harris, Elijah McCall Harris, John M Harris,
James Harris, William P. Harris, I believe this Thomas Harris' son Thomas A. Harris is the father
of Elijah M. Harris and John Harris & another younger son who lived in Marion Co. Alabama
in 1830 (possibly by 1826) and in Itawamba Co Missippi in 1840. (John died in 1849)
John's widow and most of the children along with Elijah M Harris & his wife Elizabeth moved
from Itawamba Co. North of Fulton after 1850. They made a short stop in Louisiana and settled
in Smith County TX. Most of John & Anna's family live there today.
