Lineage information in pointed brackets < > lists the Group Number and the DNA Kit Number as found on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Additional information will be included as more DNA markers are tested and as more participants match up with this grouping. This is an ongoing project seeking to chart out lines of descent that have been DNA tested as shown on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Information is based on DNA results, lineage information supplied by kit submitters, Bible records, vital records, legal documents, census records, family histories, internet sources, etc. In some cases the paper trail and/or information found on the web or other sources may be in error. Please view this information as a tool and not as proven fact.
This grouping was originally part of a larger Group 3; however, some of the kits initially matched with this group had variants from the modal of more than 3. Thus the grouping was split up into 3 separate groups. Three different lines have been submitted which now fall into this grouping.
Here are lineage charts (supported by DNA) that fall into Group 28 of the Harris Y-DNA Results. All spouses are not shown—only the ones that are listed as the parent of the generation that follows. For questionable generations, the names are preceded by an asterisk *. This means the connection between the person with an asterisk and the previous generation are unproven.
The modal listing of Group 28 up to 37 markers is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page.
For an exact match to this group, the submitter must be a male with the HARRIS surname, be from the same haplogroup, and the DNA markers from his kit number should match exactly with these results. In most cases there will be at least one variation in DNA marker values. If the two test kits are from close relatives, then the variation is due to normal mutations of DNA. DNA mutations may occur every 4 or 5 generations. Some specific markers tested are known to mutate faster than others.
At this time there are at least 3 different progenitors or earliest known ancestors represented in Group 28. Although the DNA appears to match closely, the connection between these lines has not yet been determined.

Lineage #4.—DNA Kit #44254. This is for Thomas Harris (Bef. 1605-1686) of Providence, Rhode Island (Generation #2). He is reported by some to be the son of Richard Harris of St. Albans, England who married Elizabeth Hall. More research needs to be done. The DNA of this line matches closely with that of the other lineages for Group 28; however, no common ancestor has yet been located for the kits submitted for this group.
This kit’s paternal country of origin is listed as England. This family’s migration pattern is: England > Providence Co., RI > Bennington Co., VT > Berkshire Co., MA > Franklin Co., MA.
This is a 37-marker test that matches the 37-marker modal for Group 28, except for a variant at marker 24.
