This is an ongoing project seeking to chart out lines of descent that have been DNA tested as shown on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Information is based on DNA results, lineage information supplied by kit submitters, Bible records, vital records, legal documents, census records, family histories, internet sources, etc. In some cases the paper trail and/or information found on the web or other sources may be in error. Please view this information as a tool and not as proven fact.

NOTICE: Information presented in these webpages is not to be construed as PROVABLE FACTS. It is up to the user to verify all information that he/she receives. Some information has been provided by kits submitters and their own research. Other information has been added from other sources. Additions and corrections are welcome.

Lineage information in pointed brackets < > lists the Group Number and the DNA Kit Number as found on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Additional information will be included as more DNA markers are tested and as more participants match up with this grouping.

This grouping was originally part of a larger Group 3; however, some of the kits initially matched with this group had variants from the modal of more than 3. Thus the grouping was split up into 3 separate groups.

This group belongs to the R1b1 haplogroup. For information on Genetic Distances in Group 27, view this page: Genetic Distances - Group 27

Here are lineage charts (supported by DNA) that fall into Group 27 of the Harris Y-DNA Results. All spouses are not shown—only the ones that are listed as the parent of the generation that follows. For questionable generations, the names are preceded by an asterisk *. This means the connection between the person with an asterisk and the previous generation are unproven.

The modal listing of Group 27 up to 37 markers is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page.

For an exact match to this group, the submitter must be a male with the HARRIS surname, be from the same haplogroup, and the DNA markers from his kit number should match exactly with these results. In most cases there will be at least one variation in DNA marker values. If the two test kits are from close relatives, then the variation is due to normal mutations of DNA. DNA mutations may occur every 4 or 5 generations. Some specific markers tested are known to mutate faster than others.

At this time there are 2 different progenitors or earliest known ancestors represented in Group 3A. Although the DNA appears to match closely, the connection between these lines has not yet been determined. What is interesting is that both lines submitted have a Samuel Harris in Buckingham County, Virginia. One is born in about 1770, and the other is born about 1795 and is believed to be the son of a William Harris. It would make sense that Samuel G. Harris (b. ca. 1770) and William Harris would be brothers or possibly first cousins. The age, location, and DNA match up. Also in Lineage A, there are two Harris intermarriages with cousins. Samuel G. Harris (b. ca. 1770) married Tryphena Harris, daughter of Thomas Harris (ca. 1740-1796). Samuel G. and Tryphena’s son, Flemming Matthew Harris married Augusta Ann “Gusty” Harris, daughter of Fleming Harris and granddaughter of Thomas Harris (ca. 1740-1796). Here are the ancestors:
1) Samuel G. Harris (ca. 1770-ca. 1855) of Buckingham Co., Virginia. (#23436)
2) font color="red">Samuel W. Harris (1795-1864) of Virginia, son of a William Harris. (#22881)

HARRIS DNA GROUP 27 LINEAGE CHARTS
The lineage numbers supplied tie the line in with DNA Group 27. Then a letter of the alphabet is assigned for each successive lineage.

Lineage #27-A=Samuel G. Harris (ca. 1770-ca. 1855)—DNA Kit #23436—Ancestor #1
Lineage #27-B=Samuel W. Harris (1795-1864), son of William Harris—DNA Kit #22881—Ancestor #2
