CALLICO/CALLICOTT/CALICO GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

The Callico surname has been one of the most interesting lines to research, although in my wife’s immediate branch of the family there has been some animosity toward the Callico family. Her great-grandparents Frank and Kima (Roberts) Callico were divorced. One of their sons, Gilbert, changed his name to Roberts because he did not want to be associated with his dad. Until recently the family was unsure of the date of death for Frank Callico. Some of this branch has also changed the name from Callico to Calico, possibly because of some family squabble?

Most of what I know about the Callico family has come from several family histories on the Callicott family and from a family newsletter. Also, I have obtained quite a bit of information from books and genealogy publications published in Madison County, Arkansas, where so many of the Callicos setted.

Of the Callicott Family books which have been published, only Vol. 3 is still in print. You may contact John T. Callicotte, Sr. at 6888 121st St., Seminole, FL 33772-5613 to obtain a copy. The price (including shipping) is $42.50.

The published Callicott family books are:

Callicotte, John T. Callicott Connections. Baltimore: Gateway Press, Inc., 1984. xv, 984 p.

Cabana, Jewel Callicoat. Callicott Connections II. [S.l.]: the author, 1986. 880 p.

Callicotte, John Truman, Sr. Callicott Connections III. St. Petersburg, FL: the author, 1993. xvi, 937 p.

In recent years there was a newsletter on this family surname called The Callicott Family in America, which was published quarterly by John T. Callicotte, Sr., 6888 121st St., Seminole, FL 33772-5613. The newsletter expenses were paid by donations. John has decided to quit publication of this newsletter due to his age (he is past 80 years old), and no one else has volunteered to take over as editor, so the fall issue of 1998 (Vol. 3, issue 4) was the last issue printed.

There are quite a few variant spellings of CALLICO, including CALICO, CALLICOAT, CALLICUT, CALCOTE, COLCOTT, etc. One cousin through the Hanks family is Jeanne CALCOTE Helms of Texas. She says her CALCOTE family is not related to my wife’s Callico family, but you never know.

Recently I discovered that John Harris of Charles City County, Virginia, in the early 1600s--believed to be a brother or a cousin of my Captain Thomas Harris of Jamestown, Virginia--was married to a Dorothy CALCOTT. (See Glenn’s Franklin Montgomery CALLICO, b. 9 July 1877 Drake's Creek, Madison Co., AR, d. 15 Nov. 1969 Ely, White Pine Co., NV; md. 1900 Madison Co., AR to Kima Nevada ROBERTS, b. 1882 Japton, Madison Co., AR, d. 23 Dec. 1944 San Bernardino, CA (buried at Mountain View Cemetery, San Bernardino, CA)

  • Bonnie Ruth CALLICO, b. 5 Aug. 1905 Drake's Creek, Madison Co., AR, d. 1 Dec. 1968 San Bernardino, CA; md. 22 Aug. 1928 to Robert Archie HENRY, Jr., b. 26 Aug. 1902 Cycles, OK, d. 10 June 1944 Los Angeles, CA (both buried at Mountain View Cemetery, San Bernardino, CA) *These are my wife’s grandparents.

An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been set up specifically for the CALLICOTT family. It can be found at the following address:

      http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/callicott

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the CALLICO/CALLICOTT lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.

Some other Callico/Callicotte researchers and web sites include:

      Stephen Hull's Home Page

      Bette (Calicut) Spaargaren's Callicoatte Page

John Lee Collicott's Family Tree Page

      Eddie Davis's Home Page

Note: Eddie Davis is a descendant of Benjamin Vaughan who made an affidavit regarding his Indian blood. Benjamin was a son of Nancy Callicott, daughter of Beverly Callicott. Nancy Callicott married John Vaughan, son of William Patrick Vaughan. He also lives in Springfield, Missouri (where I live), and he is researching the Benton & Looney connections to the Vaughans.
