BLACKERBY/BLACKABY/BLACKORBY GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr
The Blackerby family connection comes through my mother's Dodson and Rose families. Of course, since I go back to a Mrs. Mary Blackerby, this is not a bloodline for me, but as yet, I cannot locate the maiden name for Mary--only her first husband's name. Variant spellings include Blackaby and Blackorby.
The best researcher on the Blackerby family is Patt Roach. She has done years of research on this family in various lines and has completed a book called WE BOAST OF THE NAME OF BLACKERBY, BLACKABY, BLACKORBY which is 648 pages long. In this book Patt writes, "Apparently James Blackerby I died and his wife, Mary married John Rose. Date of death of James Blackerby I would be about 1700-1701." Patt is a descendant of Mary and her first husband, James Blackerby I, through their son James Blackerby II, so that makes us half cousins way on down the line. I descend from the second marriage of Mary to John Rose.
Some people have tried to make Mary be the daughter of Jane Wildey, but this is most certainly incorrect. In VIRGINIA COLONIAL ABSTRACTS 1645-1720 by Beverly Fleet (the same source for John Rose's will) is a notation about:
BLACKERBY, JAS. sued by Mrs. Jane Wildey for 1522 lb tobacco 15 June 1692
From the same source, page 105, in the will of Jane Wildey, she names John Rose and Mary Blackerby as witnesses.
It is Patt's contention that James Blackerby and Mary were neighbors of Jane Wildey; thus the lawsuit, and thus Mary being a witness to Jane Wildey's will. Jane Wildey's daughter was married to a Captain Fleet.
Patt is currently working on a revised version of her book.
Others are trying to research this line, including the Rose Family Association which is managed by Christine and Seymour T. Rose, certified genealogists. The Rose Family Association publishes
THE ROSE FAMILY BULLETIN and the
ROSE FAMILY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER. The address for The Rose Family Association is:

So far, we can go no further with the lineage than John Rose who married Mrs. Mary Blackerby. John Rose and Mary Blackerby had 2 daughters. One married a Dodson, and the other married a Stamps. Some of the Stamps family intermarried with the O'Kelly Family in Georgia. Those descendants are included in a book called
FOUR O'KELLY SONS by Alethia Jane Macon. Several books have also been written on the Dodson family which mention the Rose and Blackerby connection.

ROOTSWEB BLACKERBY MESSAGE BOARDSThere are several Message Boards on
Rootsweb which are set up for the BLACKERBY surname. These boards are for posting information in the following categories:
BIBLE, BIOGRAPHY, BIRTH, CEMETERY, CENSUS, DEATH, DEED, IMMIGRATION, LOOKUP, MARRIAGE, MILITARY, OBITUARY, PENSION, QUERIES, and WILLS. The search perameters and drop down screen on the main page allow you to do a key word search or to view all postings according to one of the above categories. Click on the icon below to access the Blackerby Message Boards.
Post a query (or information from any one of the above categories) on any BLACKERBY name or related family. Please give dates, and locations they lived. Try to give as much information as possible.
An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been set up specifically for the BLACKERBY family. It can be found at the following address:
http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/blackerby
***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the BLACKERBY lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
